Ozzie_the_parrot
Think some people on here will be in for a shock if they ever try to sell a house, if they think it's safe to assume that every viewing will be followed by an offer. Depends what market you’re in. And trying to equate selling a house, something that everyone does in their life, multiple times, to the purchase of a professional sports team is weak. We don’t know how serious these investors are but presumably flying from Europe to see the city and venue has to mean that they’re committed to the idea at least. And although that’s not for sure, and no one has said that, it’s a positive sign. My comment, and I assume others, is pointed to the notion that the entry fee will scare everyone away. Obviously not. That name sounds great if you aren't from Ottawa and exclusively think of it as the capital. If it's City Group, they should just go with Ottawa City. Speaking as someone who volunteered for Capital City FC in the CSL, it's an awful name. Red and White and PaulV

Do we know it's not Red Bull? Not that I don't believe you, I just haven't seen that said. Also it's worth noting that City Football Group may not be considered "European", since it's majority Abu Dhabi owned (with American and Chinese firms as part-owners) - though the headquarters are based in the UK, so who knows. SoccMan
Just get a team in Ottawa for a national soccer league to not have a team in it’s Capital is crazy , I would almost guess that Canada is probably the only country in the world right now not to have a team in their Capital playing in their national soccer league , that’s crazy actually. So let’s get this done as long as the owners have real money and are in it for the long term is my only prerequisite. xabuep2

I don't mean to pick on you SoccMan, I've seen a lot of people make this capital city argument. Of course I want to see Ottawa in the CPL as much as anyone (well, as much as anyone that doesn't live in Ottawa), but the fact that it is the capital city doesn't make it any more egregious than the other reasons why it should have a team. If we had Ottawa in the CPL we could say "A country not having a team in its national league from any of its 3 most populous cities is crazy". Just as free of context and deceiving for shock value. That said I do know there would be a lot of public and probably government opposition to a casino. On the other hand, the NLSA was planning to replace the turf at KGV in the near future anyway, so a proposal to renovate the stadium as a whole would be timely and presumably very welcome. Roofed stands would be incredible and would unironically help attendance a lot because wind and rain are the only good reasons to not go to a game at KGV at the moment, and it's windy and rainy all the time here in the "summer." It would have to be Irwin Simon behind it since he has previously talked about adding a soccer club and has been in contact with the league (he also owns the local pro hockey and basketball teams). The idea of Danny being involved in this sounds too absurd to be real since I can't imagine he'd want to have a public face again given how utterly hated he is at the moment, so Simon is really the only serious ownership possibility. The casino sounds like bullsh*t, or at least very wishful thinking because the province has previously refused bids to build a casino here and laws would need to be changed to allow it in the first place. There's also very little public support for one since gambling addiction is already a big problem. I'll say this: stuff like this almost never makes it off the island before everybody here knows, especially he press, and there's been no new rumblings about the CPL in St. John's for quite a while. But I imagine there must be some truth to it. Maybe the casino is a serious idea, but they haven't actually talked to anyone about it yet, because I highly doubt it would come to fruition. Otherwise, there actually isn't all that much new here, we already know Simon was in discussions with the CPL and wanted to bring a club here eventually, so I guess the best takeaway might be that things are progressing well. You would know the situation in the rock far better than I would, but I will say one thing: if reserved/provincial PEI eventually saw the benefits of building a casino (and we now have 2 - in part to revitalize the harness racing site) it is quite possible that the thinking could change among public officials in NL. top cheese
There will never ever be a casino in Newfoundland there is to much public opposition. I have extreme doubts over weather NL could have a sustainable professional franchise. I think this is made up. refurbishing Kgv to professional standards is a pipe dream unless someone invests significant private money into the project at no risk to the city or gov coffers. Also I’d like to know where they plan on putting seating for 4 thousand more people there and how they expect to sell that number out. PaulV
Travel costs are always an issue for Newfoundland sports teams. They have a constant revolving door of hockey teams...AHL, ECHL, Junior. Teams are often required to subsidize the travel costs of the rest of the league which is a huge barrier to entry.
Ozzie_the_parrot
Vaguely remember reading that part of the problem is that there are too many flight cancellations out of St John's that leave teams stranded in Nfld for longer than they intended.
