  • Five Players Atletico Ottawa Should Chase

The evolution of pro soccer in the nation’s capital will take a new step forward on February 11th with the new Canadian Premier League club backed by Spanish giants Atletico Madrid. From there, owners and key figures in the club will have as little as three weeks to get a manager, coaches and a full roster of players ready for pre-season camp, which is scheduled to start at the beginning of March for other CPL clubs. In the words of Sir Alex Ferguson, it’s squeaky-bum time for those building Atletico Ottawa.

Many of the league’s top players and prospects have already signed elsewhere in the league, and much of the former Fury roster has found new clubs in both the CPL and USL, but there are still many players Atletico Ottawa can to look at and potentially sign before the regular season kicks off in April. The roster will likely include some loan players from the Atletico program, as well as some L10 and PLSQ players, however there is also a chance for Atletico Ottawa to pick up some fairly well-known names in the Canadian Soccer community. Here are five players that I think Atletico Ottawa brass should seriously consider making their first grouping of signings.

    • Move Johnston to RWB. I was not impressed with his defensive coverage today. He plays that position in Montreal after all. Use Waterman as the LCB.
    • I now understand why Nancy uses Johnston as a RWB in Montreal and not as a LCB. That goal by Nunez was not the first time Johnston left his man unmarked. A while before that goal Nunez was left alone in front of Borjan. It was when Nunez shot the ball over the net. Again it was Johnston who did not cover his man. There were a couple of other times Johnston was loose on his defensive coverage. Nancy prefers Waterman as LCB in Montreal. The kid has height, is good in aerial duels and - don't shoot me for saying it - I realize now is better defensively than Johnston. I think Herdman prefers Johnston because he is more mobile than Waterman but I think it's time he may have to rethink that plan or at least talk to Nancy about his reasoning for Johnston at RWB and Waterman at LCB. Also, I think the team - especially Davies - missed Buchanan. Uruguay was double and triple teaming Davies. They could afford to do it because they didn't have to worry about their left wing. If Buchanan was playing at his usual spot on the right side, I think Davies would have seen fewer Uruguayans trying to stop him. That was part of the problem. Another problem was I know Davies is an elite talent but he was trying to do everything himself. Not good. He has to learn to use his Canadian teammates the way he uses his Bayern ones. Look to make passes. And for the love of God get him away from those corners. He is terrible. And my final comment I think our attackers had a serious case of the jitters. The whole team was a little nervous but the forwards were almost paralyzed. They were slow to run to spaces, slow to retrieve balls and even slower to release their passes or shots. All problems that can be fixed.
    • make the game more competitive , create more chances he would of been great
    • Not putting on Kennedy and Cornelius for 20 m vs Qatar, and Waterman for 5-10 today, poor management of the group. The rest was okay, if you think Koleosho isn't committed maybe better not to showcase him yet to the States. Or even Spain.
    • Yesterday was the first time I felt we could repeat our result from 1986. Losing one game close, losing the others more clearly. I thought otherwise before but I think I was in denial. The goal of a first goal still seems reasonable, not so sure about the rest.

    • It's not a qualifying bonus, it's FIFA paying for our participation from its general budget. They should already have negotiated a qualifying bonus for the Octo. Usually if you don't go, you don't get a bonus. Speaking of other nations. The question of the women is different. In their case they could do various things. One would be to treat it as their bonus for next year's World Cup. Then, take every player called into the qualifying tournament or the WC squad and split it, say between those 35 (guessing the numbers). I was just trying to give a ballpark number for the men, which comes out comparable to other country's bonuses for the WC.
    • Tajon looked good out there. He's a magic dust creator! When hes got the ball; things happen.
    • I'm pleased with the game. I think Borjan and Davies need a talk from Herdman about their egos and about keeping it simple. Others have said it, Im gonna say it too: the team has played better without Davies.
    • Big clubs do take from MLS but its mostly just to stockpile and loan.  Turner might be an exception(early days but has been on Arsenal's bench and played in their only Europa League game).  Auston Trusty, Zach Steffen recently; going back, Jack Harrison worked his way out of loan pergatory, Matt Miazga is back in MLS after the same.  Would Newcastle go for Almiron now, interesting question.  Without red and white specs on, I would take Kone at West Ham but it would be very much as a prospect, before or after the World Cup.  A good World Cup can enhance your value but should not be the reason you sign anyone. Too many clubs burned in past by that kind of transfer policy.   I hope Kone goes somewhere he will play, if that is down a league or a less glamourous one, so be it.  Even then Laryea's is cautionary tale.
