The Importance of Alphonso Davies

Saw an interesting clip on Sportsnet last night.

Davies says he really likes Herdman and is an incredible motivator. Even went as far as saying he would "run through a brick wall for him".

Take it for what it's worth, but at same time, nice to see so many of the lads motivated to succeed for the flag.

Given what has happened to Canada Basketball and even other countries where many of the NBA players bailed, I'm glad football isn't jerked around by leagues. We have a global federation that sets ground rules for the leagues to follow which allows the players to play without too much friction.

It's a 10 month year sport for national team footballers while many NBA players only play 7 months but yet claim to be too worn out to play.

And Canada has lost dual nationals but at least the committed players travel extensively to show up. Canada Soccer (like most Canadian team sport federations ex hockey & curling) have screwed up but the footballers don't hold long lasting grudges like the bballers do. And like Davies, they're proud to wear the national team colours and want do something for football for this country.

To be fair the NBA season is long in terms of games played. Not to mention these are big humans putting a lot of pressure on their bodies jumping and cutting the way they do on hardwood

Soccer players are lucky to get two month off and sometimes depending on what  tournament is happening any given summer might get less than that. Sure there could be a bit more to it , but please some of these NBA players are asked maybe once every two years to commit to their national teams but don’t . A Messi or a Ronaldo will commit to their national teams so many times each year .

Not to mention a guy like Jonas Valenciunas who has suited up for his country 13 summers in a row. There are quite a few committed South American or European NBA players.

I think the problem is more with North American NBA players vs NBA players in general.

Do not get me started.. if the MLS had its way they would treat FIFA the way the NBA treats fiba and the way NHL treats IIHF.

It comes down to not wanting to share a piece of the pie and these tournaments also allow for some reality to creep in to the over hyped superstars that the NBA marketing creates. LeBron James and Steph Curry loosing to a bunch of dudes grom Serbia slew foots billions of dollars in marketing

I just watched that last 1/2 hour.

Red and white specs on, as we would say, but I would say that is maybe a bit harsh.  Miscontrolled a couple times when he first came on, but got better.  Crisp passing generally though nothing amazing.  Could not beat his marker one-on-one the few times he had the opportunity.  Defensively tracked back very well and had one really good clearance and drew a yellow card on another chance.  Got caught ball watching once, more centrally, which allow a move to develop and their keeper had to make a save.  Will agree he needs to make smarter runs and can look lost when the ball is on the far side, which it was with Coman a lot.

Poor final pass and finishing by Bayern generally.

He wasn’t “good” because he was being triple teamed all match. It was actually a joke at one point he had over half the team around him.  Without him our other players don’t get to shine as much.  And also their keeper made a freak save or he would have had a goal and no one would say anything.
