An accountant making good in the game at 25 is certainly a nice story and I hope we can use him. But I can appreciate those that are underwhelmed ... can we all admit that part of the flush of Canadians like him in MLS is down to the number of teams nearly doubling since what 2010? So lots more room for potentially marginal guys that may have otherwise given up in the USL or trailing in Europe to make a living.

^^^ Yep, its more spots but I would say the level of the average player is prob better than 10 years ago.  And look where some of those guys are ending up.  Johnston and Buchanon may have gotten a spot opened up by out of control expansion, but once there they parlayed it into MLS success and (hopefully) big time european careers.   Good for MLS, good for our guys getting their foot in the door.

Hopefully CPL will have a similar effect albeit at a lower level.  Mb some of these guys wouldnt/shouldnt be playing at this level, but some of these overlooked guys have knocked it out of the park when given the chance (Farsi, Abzi, Waterman, McNaughton, Zator).  Sifting the extra gravel sometimes isnt pretty, but getting a extra few nuggets makes it worth it.

Spoken like someone who didn’t watch MLS or the National team 10 years ago

While I value this board for keeping me up to date with the CMNT, this thread reminds me why I don't come here all the time and of the fact that I personally would not like most of you if we met.  Many of the old timers like myself just don't come around here.

“Man this board sucks because I HATE YOU ALL”

That would assume the quality of MLS rosters would otherwise have remained reasonably constant over that time. A reminder of some of the players that were on TFC's roster in that era:

I'll admit it, that's a grade-AAA selection of TFC flops from the nadir of the team's early scouting era. But on the other hand, who knows how they'd have done with another 15 teams vying for cheap talent to potentially latch on with?

Expand early MLS and I bet Marco Rizi and Carl Fletcher and Robbie Aristodemo or maybe even a guy like Rob Csabai may not have had the same problems finding club work or had to fall into the indoor game.

Have our players improved since then? I hope so. But I'm also thankful for both the dilution and opportunities that a 28 team league provides guys like Petrasso or Hiebert or Baldisimo, as opposed to the old 10 or 12.

Any idea why he was that high up the field?  It doesn’t look like it came immediately after a set piece and yet he is up there mixing with the strikers.

It was right after a set piece. The ball got blocked and then sent to the other side where the player sent in the cross to Hiebert.
