My reading is that he wasn't appreciated by the general Canadian public enough. No part says playing for your country is a waste, just that the Canadian national team wasted the abilities of Atiba by not producing more players/results around him. Anyway, point is, a lot of guys got Covid, not good. BTW, haven't heard that song in a long time, cool tune. The Doors were very distinctive nobody like them before or since. It may be a more suitable song for this forum or for that matter any internet forum. It's called Ship of Fools. The opening line bears some relevance to the Covid era.
