Also Herdman:  "Look, we know Atiba is a key player for us, but we didn't want to risk him setting the CMNT caps record in Jamaica.  So we put him on the list to keep teams guessing, but are saving the record for being back home in Edmonton where we can all celebrate in style after he scores the winning goal against Mexico.  All according to plan."

Has anyone asked Herdman why he called players whom he seemingly knew wouldn't be coming?  Or why Hoilett wasn't available in Mexico?   Did a single journalist travel with the team?   Is it just PR flacks for the broadcasters and Canada Soccer itself asking questions?

The team is still not popular enough, and the ecosystem too simple for anything but these symbiotic remora fish to exist in the media around Canada Soccer. We need to get better before we get some real criticism in pressers and interviews. For now everyone's just surprised to see the team doing OK and are happy it's boosting their career.

Mourinho did this at Real Madrid and UEFA added games to the suspensions

Not really, because of the type of yellow.

It was a CL group stage match maybe 10 years ago. They were leading the second to last match of the group stage and had already qualified first, and Mourinho had a little  conversation late in the match with Sergio Ramos and someone else, so they'd sit out the last group stage match and be fresh for the knock-out rounds in the new year. And then Sergio went out and took a deliberately dumb yellow, and the other player did too. But they were both time-wasting on a free kick or corner. But it was so blatant UEFA decided "we will not be mocked".

None of our yellows were like that, at least not the Tajon one. And besides, the Laryea yellow was ridiculous because he did not deserve it-- the ref only pulled it out to save face after the Mexican kickout, which could have been red.

Other than Neil Davidson of the Canadian Press most other media covering the team are glorified bloggers

You're missing the point.  That's all fine as long as Herdman keeps his mouth shut.  He shouldn't be delivering quotes that could be construed as a confession.

For the record, Eustaquio's booking at the Gold Cup was a carbon copy of the Real Madrid Ramos incident.  Thankfully nothing happened to us even though it was so blatantly obvious.  Herdman avoided running his mouth on that one.

Agreed, but we don't know if that tweet is a quote, it's a short-hand tweet and does not sound very accurate.

In any case, I think Herdman is being a blowhard because neither of those yellows were at all obvious, nor did it make sense for the player to miss the next match.

The Eustaquio yellow in the GC, exactly, that was that. I was not sure why they did it, but it was blatant. But no one said a word.

In seriousness though, it shows how silly it was for some to immediately proclaim him the king of Canada (and mock anyone who dared question him) after gaining the point in Mexico.   This is a marathon, not a sprint, and we will only know the quality of the collective coaching decisions at the end of the campaign (just like we will only know the wisdom of the approach taken in Mexico at the end of this window).  There is no doubt that the failure to call in adequate reinforcements (and the question marks around some of the other personnel decision) raise a few eyebrows.  Hopefully we don’t come to regret them.

I also think the attitude post game of being genuinely disappointed to lose, which was widely praised, was pretty ignorant to the fact this is a marathon.

Unless I missed it, has there been any news on Panama coming into this game?  Any injury concerns?  Just seems really quiet

Nothing I have heard. Panama is training tonight at BMO, hopefully we learn more then.

Nothing so far, but either they're gonna have to rotate or their guys will be very tired coming into this game.

"We already know why."

I've read speculation, but was Herdman or Hoilett or anyone else ever asked and an answer provided?

It was widely reported that Hoilett and Wotherspoon would have had to quarantine upon return to the UK had they travelled to Mexico.

I'm not sure what else you need to know.

These are the players they called up for the window, 27 in total.

They usually play a 1-4-2-3-1, with Mejía as starting keeper.

The defenders have been Murillo, at Anderlecht, Escobar in 2nd tier Spain, then they are reporting Cummings and Davis will play, the latter in Slovakia. The same back line as vs. the US.

Mids are usually two DMs, Godoy who is Johnston's teammate, Ayarza who plays in Perú, or Martínez, who plays in Panama and started vs. the US. Then three more attacking mids to strikers, being Bárcenas, Spain 2nd division, then maybe Quintero also in Peru, or Gondola, or Guerrero. With Blackburn up high. They could also play Torres up high. They scored on a left-footed Davis corner and Godoy headed it in, or maybe it was an own goal; near post.

Armando Cooper also came on 2nd half, former TFC. Just after scoring they actually subbed in Stephens for Gondola, striker for a mid--maybe they already had that ready in case they didn't score, but still, they made that sub.

On paper they are not at our level, and they come from a really disperse set of clubs. They are fairly tall, and have a lot of players who are more mids than attackers. Most assume they will try to clog up the middle and not let us progress. I have not idea how we are supposed to break them down.

Keepers: Luis Mejía (CA Fénix , URU), José Calderón (San Francisco FC, PAN), Orlando Mosquera(Always Ready, BOL).

Defenders: Michael Amir Murillo (RSC Anderlecht, BEL), César Blackman (FC DAC 1904, SVK), Fidel Escobar (AD Alcorcón,ESP), Jiovany Ramos (Atlético Venezuela,VEN), Harold Cummings (Always Ready, BOL), Óscar Linton (FC Imabari, JPN), Éric Davis (FC DAC 1904,SVK), Jorge Gutiérrez (Tauro FC,PAN).

Mids: Édgar Bárcenas (CD Leganés,ESP), Aníbal Godoy (Nashville SC, USA) José Luis Rodríguez (Real Sporting de Gijón, ESP), Alberto Quintero ( Universitario,PER), César Yanis (CD Del Este,PAN) Abdiel Ayarza (Cienciano,PER), Cristian Martínez (Plaza Amador,PAN), Armando Cooper (Árabe Unido,PAN) y Eduardo Guerrero (Maccabi Tel-Aviv,ISR)

Attackers: Rolando Blackburn (The Strongest,BOL), Gabriel Torres (LD Alajuelense, CR), Alfredo Stephens (Aragua FC,VEN), Jair Catuy (Always Ready,BOL), Fredy Gondola (Dep. Tachira, VEN),Ismael Díaz (Tauro F.C.,PAN) y Abdiel Arroyo (Árabe Unido,PAN).

With some of the MLB LDS having ended, it is great to see the game will now be on Sportsnet 1. This is much better than when it appeared that it would be streamed through SN Now. It is big boost for the exposure of the team and game.
