Tosaint Ricketts

Saw an interesting bit of trivia on a reddit post. It looked at which players had scored international goals against all six confederations. No Canadian has ever accomplished the feat, but Tos is the closest with 5/6:

CONMEBOL: June 1, 2011 vs Ecuador (H)

CONCACAF: September 6, 2011 vs Puerto Rico (A)

UEFA: May 27, 2014 vs Moldova (N)

CAF: October 6, 2016 vs Mauritania (N)

OFC: March 24, 2018 vs New Zealand (N)

AFC:

A testimonial against Hong Kong in Vancouver maybe? 😉 Come on CSA, you could use the money.

——

Compared against active Canadians, no one else is even close:

Tosaint Ricketts (5) - CONMEBOL (Ecuador), CONCACAF (Puerto Rico), UEFA (Moldova), CAF (Mauritania), OFC (New Zealand)

Steven Vitoria (3) - CAF (Mauritania), CONCACAF (USA), AFC (Japan)

Atiba Hutchinson (2) - CONCACAF (Honduras), UEFA (Ukraine)

Cyle Larin (2) - CONCACAF (Puerto Rico), AFC (Qatar)

Jonathan David (2) - CONCACAF (USVI), AFC (Qatar)

Lucas Cavallini (2) - CONCACAF, AFC (USVI, Japan)

Ismaël Koné (1) - AFC (Bahrain)

Junior Hoilett (1) - CONCACAF (Jamaica)

Alphonso Davies (1) - CONCACAF (French Guyana, Costa Rica)

Jonathan Osorio (1) - CONCACAF (Bermuda)

Tajon Buchanan (1) - CONCACAF (Mexico)

Stephen Eustaquio (1) - CONCACAF (Martinique, Haiti)

Mark Anthony Kaye (1) - CONCACAF (Cayman Islands)

Alistair Johnston (1) - CONCACAF (Cayman Islands)

Sam Adekugbe (1) - CONCACAF (USA)

Richie Laryea (1) - CONCACAF (Bermuda)

David Wotherspoon (1) - CONCACAF (Cayman Islands)

Theo Corbeanu (1) - CONCACAF (Bermuda)

Doneil Henry (1) - CONCACAF (Cuba)

Zachary Brault-Guillard (1) - CONCACAF (Aruba)

Jayden Nelson (1) - CONCACAF (Barbados)

Charles-Andreas Brym (1) - CONCACAF (Barbados)

Other top 10 Canadian goal scorers and cap leaders:

Dwayne De Rosario (4) - AFC (South Korea), UEFA (Scotland), CONCACAF (Belize), CONMEBOL (Venezuela)

John Catliff (4) - AFC (Iraq), CONCACAF (Honduras), CONMEBOL (Peru), UEFA (Scotland)

Dale Mitchell (3) - OFC (New Zealand), CONCACAF (Guatemala), CAF (Ghana)

Alex Bunburry (3) - AFC (Singapore), CONCACAF (El Salvador), UEFA (Portugal)

Paul Stalteri (3) - CONCACAF (Guatemala), UEFA (Malta), CAF (Libya)

Ali Gerba (2) - CONCACAF (Cuba), CONMEBOL (Venezuela)

Julian de Guzman (2) - CONCACAF (Costa Rica), CONMEBOL (Brazil)

Mark Watson (2) - AFC (Austrailia), CONCACAF (El Slavador)

Lyndon Hooper (2) - CONMEBOL (Peru), AFC (Australia)

Notable there that Lyndon Hooper never scored a goal against CONCACAF opposition.

Interesting post! Thanks for this!

Australia was part of OFC before 2006 or 2007 ish. If you count Australia as OFC instead of AFC in that time period, do any of the older players add a confederation to their list? For example, if Mark Watson scored against Australia before 2006 he would have (at the time) scored against an OFC opponent, and if he scored against another AFC team, then he would have OFC and AFC in his list.

No, but he will work in the front office. He will likely coach his son.

Also, we may see a Sedin and a Ferraro with the big boys some day. Yes, that’s right, Henrik and Ray have kids at the academy as does Tosaint.

Never thought we'd have to fight Sweden for a dual-nat.

This is a case where, like Michael Bradley’s kids, they very likely will represent Canada as they have literally grown up here.

i don’t know how good V.Sedin is btw, nor for Bradley’s kids.

I have heard that Bradley won’t leave Toronto in retirement.

It's like a reverse Landon Donovan

I hope this is a case of talented gene pools, and not a filtering out of people without famous dads. Wasn't Herdman's kid also in Vancouver's system? Was Bontis junior ever in Vancouver? I think probably not, I think he wound up at Forge?

Solid professional, and seemed like a solid person too. Always brought it for the nats. Continued to refine his game into his 30s. Willing to go anywhere to that would give him an opportunity, and better than his journeyman career path would suggest. I think if he was coming though today would have achieved a higher ceiling. Respect.
