It was at least being done in the NHL and MLB in the very early eighties

First video documented one:

I only know this because I have had this discussion with English fans who call it the Mexican wave, when I grew up calling it just the wave, obviously.

I find it hard to believe any Mexican would copy anything a crazy Gringo would do. 😛

Canadians in MLS - Week 7

Montreal beat fellow Canadian team Vancouver 2-1 this week, while Toronto beat MLS Leaders Philadelphia Union 2-1.

Of note, Jonathon Osorio put in another great performance including a great assist.  For the 2nd week in a row, Alistair Johnston provided a beautiful assist.  Toronto FC once again played 9 Canadians in their game this weekend and included a 1st MLS assist for Kadin Chung.  Although he did not get a shutout, Dayne St Clair put a fantastic performance in this weekend making 8 saves in his 3rd win of the season.

Toronto - 3,206 minutes

That wouldn’t be a bad succession plan.

Knowing Herdman after he hears that quote, he'll hire Ancelotti as an assistant.

On a side note. The Ancelotti quote is an indication we better expand our bandwagon. THis Canadaian team is becoming a darling of the football world.

The curtain has been pulled back... interesting look into how Campagna got involved as a training player and has stuck around. Some good quotes on the Herdman and the team

https://www.whitecapsfc.com/wfc2/news/the-greatest-honour-of-my-life-how-wfc2-defender-cristian-campagna-got-called-up

Some key quotes that a lot don't like to hear but must understand....

Quote

“Everybody is so tight in the group, you can talk to anybody and they’ll treat you like a brother but I look at people in similar positions to me, so you've got Steven Vitoria, Doneil Henry, Alistair Johnson, they're all guys that I look up to because we play in similar positions,” said Campagna, “But the whole team is amazing, they're all such a close group of friends and family.”

and...

Quote

“They're flexible, adaptable to anything, they have every scenario locked down and the preparation that they do is just amazing. It's crazy to see how much goes into it,” describes Campagna, “[Herdman]'s always motivating us, he's always giving the team speeches, he's showing them videos, he gets them ready, he even gets me ready. I'm in the pre-game meeting, I'm not going to play but I'm ready to run through a wall for him.”

It's the high level of respect that players have for Herdman. As a coach, that it the most important thing you can ask, and don't take for granted in jeopardizing that.

It's worked to get us where we are today, and I don't see his method changing.

There no shortage of American goal keepers.  Zac Steffen, Matt Turner, Bill Hamid,  Sean Johnson etc etc.  They could probably get Stefen Frey if they want to.   I heard good things about this kid, but clearly GK is not an area of need for the Americans.

Americans have always produced an abundance of good Goalkeepers. From Brad Friedel, Tim Howard, Brad Guzan so on.

So i am not sure this would send shockwaves throughout their association

Steffen has stalled hard since his overseas move, Turner is good but 28 and who knows what's gonna happen with him with his new move, and the rest of the guys like Hamid, Johnson, etc. aren't good enough. Slonina is probably already past the Hamid/Johnson types on merit right now.

I don't think the USA has any goalkeeper prospect close to Slonina right now, but not many countries do. As people should be able to tell I am extremely high on this kid and if he chooses Poland not only will it be good for Canada, but it will be good for my other national team, too :P

Slonina has world class potential and is already better than a few of those keepers IMO.

He has a great chance at being the US #1 within a few years - I'm not sure if he surpasses Szczesny or Fabianski in that same time.

Fabianski is 37 and already retired from the NT. Szczesny is 32 and has had a bit of an up and down career with the NT, but he is a great keeper and somewhat underrated because he is a goof. He was recently fantastic against Sweden in the WC playoff and I wouldn't expect Slonina to challenge Szczesny, more like take over when he retires.

But Poland has other young keepers like Dragowski (mega talent and mega goof) and Majecki (very promising young player who stalled since his Monaco move). Like I mentioned above Poland has not had an issue with producing keepers over the past 20-25 years. While I think Slonina absolutely has the potential to be Poland's #1 for a while I would agree with the general sentiment that that path to the #1 spot is clearer (and quicker) with the USA.

The US has been a bit of a recognized factory for producing quality keepers.   Legend has it that american kids develop strong hand eye coordination through playing sports like baseball and basketball in their youth.   This gives them a bit of a leg up on the rest of the word when playing this position.  Looking at all the americans that have played at the highest levels in Europe over the past twenty years and the position most frequently comes to mind is GK

By the way,  this kid was interviewed on Extra time radio a couple of weeks back.  Yes, he is apparently promising and he is proud of his Polish background.  Very smart and personable. But i also think that he also sees the pecking order ahead of him on the US team and Poland, and he is picking the side with the shortest queue

interview starts at 1:01:42

I'm calling shenanigans on this one.  What sport requires faster reflexes than hockey?🙂
