It wasn't easy to get from the stands onto the pitch but if it happened, I didn't see it.

The only thing I can think of is there was a fan who ran on the sideline of the field for a very brief moment.  There was an injury or something going on in the Canadian box and Weston McKennie was waiting to take a throw in.  While McKennie was waiting to take the throw in, a fan ran over to him and fell to his knees and opened his jacket to show he was wearing a Juventus jersey.  The fan then held his hands out like McKennie was a "messiah" and then quickly ran back to the crowd untouched by security.  It happened real quick and without any interaction with security or police.  This happened in front of the friends and family section on the southwest corner I believe.  I suspect that only that small segment of the stadium was able to see it.

Canadians in MLS - Weeks 8 & 9

Montreal won 1 and tied 1, TFC lost both their games and Vancouver lost once and had this past weekend off.

Of note Jonathon Osorio added a 4th assist of the season.  Meanwhile Kosi Thompson added a couple of assists.  Deandre Kerr scored his first MLS goal as well.  In Montreal, Kamal Miller had an exceptional game this weekend by scoring a goal and providing a beautiful assist.  Lastly, MAK scored a beautiful curler for Colorado.  Last week, Dayne St Clair provided another shutout for Minnesota in a 3-0 win.  This weekend Crepeau provided another shutout in a 2-0 victory.  Overall a quiet couple of weeks for Canadians but there were a couple season and MLS debuts over the past two weeks.  Both Piette & Akinola returned from lengthy injuries for the season debuts.  Themi Antonoglou had his MLS debut for Toronto FC last week.  As did Ali Ahmed for Vancouver Whitecaps.

There's a worrisome pattern in your chart. You remove Canadians playing on Canadian clubs and this is what you get:

3 in L.A.

3 in Minnesota

1 in Colorado

1 Houston

1  in Orlando

1 in N.Y.

This tells me the MLS is a problem.

Why is it a problem?  It is a foreign league that has 10 players on US teams.  That has to be the largest concentration of Canadian players out of all the foreign leagues.

How many more Canadian would be on MLS teams if they didn't discriminate against Canadian players?

I have no idea but I hate the fact that Canadian soccer fans often brush this off.

Personally it doesn’t bother me. It forces Canadian players to be better and go to other leagues in Europe or around the world. Now we have our own league. The Americans had a problem before where all their players stayed in the MLS and were never challenged. Canadian players are forced to battle. That’s better for development. Just hope the CSA improve their scouting, it looks like they have.

my issue is like a player like Osorio. I will always have this question how much better would he have been if you moved to a better league ?

Thats exactly right...and I think its our fault to look at it differently.  We mistakenly think we have a stake in that league because we have our 3 biggest markets swallowed up in it (maybe 25% of the country?) and CDN owners/teams have helped grow that league.  Its not enough to get us fair roster rules for CDN players, its just another foreign league.

Do they discriminate against Canadian players?  I thought it was just US players that received special treatment.  Everyone else is treated as an international. A Canadian is treated the same as a Mexican, Italian, etc.  This is one of the reasons we have CPL.  Just be thankful that the Canadian players on Canadian-based teams don't get counted as internationals - I'm sure that conversation has been had quietly in the corridors of the USSF over the years.

Your exactly right, we think that because we have 3 teams and the league operates in our country our players would get similar treatment om the US (domestic) as the americans do here. But its really their league and they dont have to cut us any breaks as far as roster rules etc.  Even if they proudly trumpet TFC big signings and use them to promote the league.  However if they did go as far as making CDN players count as INT on a CDN team that really would be the last straw eh?  I dont see how I could support any CDN MLS team if they let that stand, and I wouldnt watch another MLS game ever.

The Vancouver, Montreal and Toronto CMAs are roughly a combined total of 14M of our 38M inhabitants, so more than a third.

At any rate, this doesn't bother me either. MLS is the American domestic league, it is what it is. We benefit from having 3 teams in it, around a 10 percent stake in what's becoming one of the better soccer leagues in the Americas, if not the world. MLS is arguably the 4th biggest league on this side of the pond, after Brazil, Argentina and Mexico. That's a pretty good league to be a part of.

Yes, I wish things were more equal towards Canadians, who doesn't? There are even Americans who recognize treating them differently is antiquated. Be that as it may though, I feel you got to take the good with the bad and call it a win, especially now that we have the Canadian Premier League. We're already seeing more Canadians successfully make the jump than ever before, so it's working. I believe it won't be long before every team in the league has at least one Canadian on the roster. And if there was a stigma about preferring Latin American or European imports to Canadian, I can only see that fading with time the better we get.

We're a World Cup team, after all ;)

Why is it a problem?  It is a foreign league that has 10 players on US teams.  That has to be the largest concentration of Canadian players out of all the foreign leagues.

If it's a foreign league, what the hell is it doing operating in Canada? I don't see the EPL operating in France or Germany. The same goes for any other league. It's operating in Canada so it's not foreign. It's a North American league. That's the first point.

The second point: why would the league make a distinction between international and domestic players if it didn't mean anything? It does mean something and that something is to develop domestic players. Here is an excerpt from Wikipedia: MLS employs a variety of mechanisms to promote parity and domestic player development .  The problem lies in the fact that Canadians except for some academy players are not domestic players on US teams. For me that means a young up and coming Canadian has to be head and shoulders better than another young player from the states or aboard to even be looked at. That doesn't help with "domestic" player development.  I know the American system produces more players than our own system but  if Canadians were considered domestic for US based teams, I guarantee you there would be at least two  Canadian players on each MLS team. Jesus, I can name a half dozen players in the CPL that would be in the MLS right now. And I don't watch many CPL games.

The Americans really have nothing to worry about. They would still produce more of the domestic players in the league.  Right now the way the rules are constructed an American team will pick a middle tier domestic player over a Canadian who may not be top tier but is better than the middle tier player. If Canadians were considered domestic there would easily be a lot more Canadians in the MLS.

Would you ask this about the NHL, NBA and MLB as well? Sports in Canada and the United States have been organized in a cross-border manner for a very long time so since the 1960s FIFA has provided soccer in Canada with the ability to emulate that to foster the sport's growth in a Canadian context.

This is a silly argument considering how soccer has developed around the world v those other sports.

Besides all those leagues you listed do not discriminate against Canadian players the way MLS does.

Do those teams make distinctions between domestic and international players? I know the NHL is viewed as a North American league . As for the other two, I don't care. They don't make distinctions between players.

We've just qualified for the World Cup for the first time since the mid-80s. Glass half full type people are focusing more on that right now than the intricacies of MLS roster rules.

Why should we rest on our laurels?

Don't we want to be better?

Basically you don't want to admit that MLS is wrong on this and are just trying to brush it off.

Wow, I thought it was a joke suggesting he may want to coach Canada in the future, but maybe there is more to it

Would probably help with some future fence sitters. But right now its Herdmans job until he doesnt want it anymore. For herdman i think he only leaves for a good gig in england, and even that may not be until after 2026.

Not sure how anyone thinks the team being someone’s retirement project is a good idea.  Went well with Floro (obviously not comparing the quality of coaching).

Because some of us want to move to the next step: contend for the Cup. Not be simply participants.

Does anyone know if there are domestic differences between the Welsh teams playing in England?   We know they are even able to participate in English cup competitions as well.  Yes, I understand these are 100 year old clubs that played in English systems for nearly a century.  Curious to know if there are any differences in Wales like there is here Canada in the MLS.

Welsh players aren't considered internationals on English teams

I think all British players are domestic.

The main difference is Welsh teams in the English pyramid use English spots in Europe while in Canada Canadian teams don't have access to American spots even if they're in MLS or in the past, USL.
