CPL Stadium Thread

Cloverdale Fairgrounds, Bridgeview and City Centre have been identified by the city as possible locations for the new stadium.

Bridgeview was where the hockey arena was proposed for as well.

Councillor Hayne said other bids might also be on the table. He said city staff will take the next six weeks to evaluate the submissions.

Who conceivably would bid for something like this other than the CanPL group. NWSL or the BC Lions? Minor league baseball? Think that's a bit of a stretch.

The NWSL team would play at BC Place. No idea who else would be bidding.

City Centre close to the Skytrain is the best choice. Easy access for the whole Metro Area

City Centre is the best of the three locations if you are coming from Vancouver, but is less than ideal for large parts of Surrey, Langley and the rest of the Valley. Cloverdale is the opposite, easy for the Valley and a nightmare to get to from Vancouver. Bridgeview has its own host of problems.

Vancouver Stealth for the arena maybe? I dunno. I know they draw low numbers in Langley and jumping on a decently sized arena in a larger city like Surrey could help them greatly.

Saying this having lived in BC for a long time, and with family and friends all over Metro Vancouver, with a bunch in Langley...

Isn't it dominated by cars and highways when you live in Surrey and Langley, and you're getting around the Fraser Valley for entertainment options after work? I'm sure public transit is key for the regular 7 to 6 work grind, but I thought it's mainly all about cars when you're getting somewhere around the Valley during the weekends and such?

If so, doesn't it make not too much of a difference where the stadium is located within Surrey for anybody with a car? It's what, a 20 minute extra drive from say Cloverdale to Bridgeview if you are a decent driver? I mean, it's so comfy in the car, you just blast some music and that 20 minutes just zips right by lol.

Whereas, if you think about all the CPL fans around Metro Vancouver, way beyond the Fraser Valley, I mean, I'm sure there must be CPL fans in Vancouver proper, in North Van, Port Moody, Delta, wherever, you'd think that while most of these fans would drive to watch CPL as well, you want to give as much public transit options as possible to the fans, and that would very much mean putting it next to SkyTrain, which I assume Bridgeview and City Centre/Whalley are. I'm just taking guesses here, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

I am a big fan of TFC II, and I saw TFCII fail pretty badly, all things said, in terms of attendance. The biggest reason by far that our fellow TFC supporters were telling me on social media was the fact that OSC in Vaughan had an absolute terrible reach by public transit. No subway, no nothing. It was accessible purely by car. The only people coming to watch regularly were likely people from Vaughan, which is just one out more than a dozen cities in the GTA. There were a LOT of fans based in downtown Toronto and elsewhere around Greater Toronto that wanted to come support TFCII and our academy grads, #FutureIsBright and all that, and couldn't make it out there because they didn't have a car.

I'd hate for CPL Fraser Valley to have that same issue. Public transit is key, even more so for hardcore football supporters. And while Fraser Valley pride is key, you will also be relying just as much on CPL Canadian soccer pride as well. And there will be CPL fans in Greater Vancouver outside of Fraser Valley as well, guaranteed.

There will be very little regular support for a Fraser Valley team from Van, NVan, Burnaby, NWest, Coquitlam, PMoody, Richmond. Outside of maybe a few disgruntled Whitecaps fans, it just wont happen

The Valley is way more car reliant(understatement) but there is a plan to change that over the next 10 years. Thats why i think dt might be a little premature at the moment.

You have nearly a million people from Surrey to Chilliwack. That's you're target market

I totally hear you. Just thinking that that very little regular support from outside of the Valley might be more than we expect, that's all. At least make it easier for them too.

Cloverdale's a bit of a drive but wouldn't call it anything close to a nightmare. Just take the freeway out of town and exit onto 176 hwy which goes right by the fairgrounds/Casino.

I posted this in the general but also thought it made sense here.

I've made a map with all the potential CPL markets that either have either grassroots support or some sort of ownership group we know about. I've attached teams to future/potential stadium locations. I've also added a layer with road trips within the east/west. Hope you guys like this. Let me know if there's anything I could add or if anything is wrong.

This came out today mentioning the Highlanders and the CanPL. For those who may not know, Langford is a suburb of Victoria and this is the original stadium that the Highlanders played in for the first few years.

For Langford, it’s game on for stadium with 8,000 seats

Langford plans to expand Westhills Stadium to 8,000 seats, from 1,718, in what could be a game-changer for outdoor sports in Greater Victoria.

It would put the region in the capacity range of what would be required for the upcoming professional soccer Canadian Premier League, B.C. Lions exhibition CFL games, and for certain international games featuring the Canadian men’s and women’s soccer and rugby teams.

"Confirmed" Highlanders to Canadian Premier League.

Also "Confirmed" the 13+ Municipal Areas that are commonly mistaken as "Victoria" are finally amalgamating!

Ok... Neither of those things are actually confirmed, but as far as CanPL rumours go, that's how this should totally read.

Two quick questions to the local;

What's the commute to Langford like? Why did the Highlanders moved out of there in the first place?

It really depends on the time of the game. If it is a weeknight, then it would be rather unpleasant. On a Saturday or Sunday afternoon it is pretty much a maximum of 30 minutes from anywhere in the Greater Victoria area. I used to live by the legislature in the very tip of downtown Victoria and getting to Langford, with non rush hour traffic was a 15-20 minute drive. To be honest, it is porbably better in Langford in that sense. Downtown is  more likely to get congested and Langford offers an easier option for people coming from up island.

Has public transit to Langford improved? It used to be painful.

As mentioned above, on weekends the drive is OK, but parking sucks balls.

The Highlanders started out there because (I believe) they got a sweet deal to be the first tenants in the brand new stadium which was supposed to include a few "suites" and they believed their "customers" would be families in the area.

Nope, not one bit. It takes an hour to get anywhere near there by bus plus a long walk down a road that, IIRC, still doesn't have a sidewalk all the way down.

Hopefully if they make the move they will bring back the charter bus from downtown. The Burger & Bus game day special at the pub was awesome.

Still pretty painful apparently, I will be honest and say I do not have to use Victoria public transit much these days!

Victoria is a difficult location in the sense that, as it stands now, there is no one location that would come without some significant flaws.

King George V Soccer Complex in St. John's will be getting a turf replacement:

http://www.stjohns.ca/media-release/capital-budget-2018-projects-discussed-committee-whole#kiing george

King George 5th Turf Replacement - $900,000
The King George V Soccer Complex (KGV) is a City of St. John's facility under current lease agreement with St. John’s Soccer Association. The current artificial turf surface as well as clubhouse/ change room facilities and bleachers to accommodate up to 6500 spectators were built in 2006 in partnership with the St. John’s Soccer Club and the Province of NL.  When purchased, the turf was given a 10 year life span. It is currently going into 12th year. KGV hosts many tournaments, in October 2019, the Men’s Challenge Cup and Women’s Jubilee Shield National Soccer Championships have been awarded to KGV with an anticipated overall economic impact of up to $1 million dollars in the shoulder season. There may be potential funding partners for this project but have yet to be confirmed.

Nothing huge but that last sentence is kinda interesting.

The YorkU track is way bigger than I thought. I've watched some matches in Moncton (U20WC), and found the track didn't bother me, which was unexpected, but on the left hand side of the first picture you show, the stands seem soooooo far from the pitch!

Those blue stands on the left were temporary for the PanAm games, they aren't there anymore. If they put some there they could be way closer if they were movable, so the school can still use the track. But I think the grandstand seats 3000 or so, so they might not add anything. At least that side is raised above the ground a bit.

There's a rugby game there in September,  so I'll see what the view is like then and post a pic.

York9 said they were adding seats apparently and CPL wants stadium capacities to be over 5-7K minimum it seems. 3K won't cut it for D1 CPL.
