CPL new teams speculation

Recommended Posts

The rumoured casino soccer stadium development in Durham region would follow this model. The advantage Excelsior have is that they own the land, so will prioritize soccer unlike most property developers. Orient in London, England and Partick Thistle in Scotland have done stuff like this in the past as small fully pro clubs in the shadow of much larger rivals in the same city. There are clubs in Valleta in Malta and Belgrade in Serbia (forget their names) that play in small stadiums on the roof of shopping mall developments.

Could happen but not that beautiful enclosed proper looking stadium design not here in Canada. The design would most likely be that beautiful Canadian looking stadium design, you know the two big massive grandstands a la BMO Field Tim Horton Field design and the new Lansdown Park design in Ottawa the kind of designs that just make you want to go back for more after attending games at these so soccer friendly stadiums lol!

That would be f****** awesome excuse my language but that just looks so great...definitely need more CanPL facilities especially in Mississauga, Brampton, etc

It's a nice design but I don't think it would be utilized for anything sub 15,000 seats over here. It would be a great strategy for York 9 though when the club gets more established, especially if they are considering building a little further up the region. The condo aspect gives the club a base of potential supporters as well.

Re: UBC Memorial Stadium as CanPL venue

Not having tried to get there for a game in years, have the transit options improved enough to make it work? Previous lower level clubs trying to operate out of there found it was difficult to get people out that far for games, and as an away fan we had to take personal vehicles from the ferry terminal.

Outside of Pacific FC, how many BC teams would be truly viable for the CPL??? And where??

I almost agree with what has been said: one team further south and east from downtown Vancouver, Swangard could even be possible but not any closer, New West, Fraser Valley; and one team in Kelowna, but you'd need a major operation to get that moving, starting with some real mover backing things.

The Greater Vancouver option is the better one.

I still think you could put a team in Swangard and it would do well. I know all the excuses used against it, but there aren't many places that compare for watching a game on a warm summer night... I miss the Whitecaps there.

I wont go in to the many reasons why there wont be a team at Swangard. I will just agree that it's an awesome setting for a game. I take my kids to Central Park all the time and the area and park is even better than back in the day when the Whitecaps actually played there

I think the best case realistic scenario for Swangard would be the rumored 86ers BC League 1 team. That would work for everyone

UBC would never work.. its literally Whitecaps backyard. It's also impossible for anyone to get to

Wouldn't work so well from a spectator standpoint, but what if a big foreign club wants to set up a North American affiliate from a youth academy standpoint now that the Rubicon has been crossed on that with Atletico Ottawa and doesn't care about that so much? While we are on the subject of affiliates...

Are there any cities or towns that can count as being in both the Greater Vancouver and Fraser Valley regions??

I could see New West, Kelowna, Kamloops, Fraser Valley in L1BC.

Those four clubs plus the ones from USL League 2

L1BC has to build from existing teams, which it is meant to do. You can't just invent clubs out of nothing for geographical purposes, it would not give you a solid base for any L1.

While I understand what you're saying, far too many of the existing clubs are too busy infighting and trying to protect "their" turf.  The call went out a few years ago for some form of BCL1.  Essentially none of the existing clubs answered the call.  This is going to be the second attempt.  There will be a few existing clubs, but I would suspect you'll see a few clubs created from scratch like the rumoured new 86ers.

Thanks for updating, I really was not aware the response was so poor. I could imagine that the step up is costly and they don't feel they can compete. But I am surprised the BCSA would not provide adequate conditions to entice the clubs most ready to compete in an L1 into the structure. Whose fault would it be that there is such a poor response, when in Ontario or Québec the clubs are responding well?

Honestly, I'm really not sure who's fault it would be.  I just remember BCSA trying to get a league going and not enough clubs being willing to join.  I suspect that the L1 league's in Ontario and Quebec, as well as BC's atrocious player development record in the last decade, has spurred BCSA to try again.  It does sound like they favour the creation of new clubs, as egos/animosity between a number of the current leagues/clubs is an issue.  I look at Victoria Highlanders, TSS Rovers, and the new 86ers (all rumoured to be in the new league) as an excellent starting point.  Beyond that, no idea who/where might be in.

Wouldn't some of the HP clubs doing well, which is what TSS was, want to join in? Add to that a few PCSL teams, or VMSL teams and you've got your 6-8 teams. But I guess I am just saying that on paper. Perhaps the SA is asking too much of them?

Well, TSS was more USL2.  Same with Highlanders.  In theory, yes.  But PCSL seems to exist in it's own world, and teams from VMSL and FVSL would have made the most sense but are reportedly (and to be clear, I'm only hearing this 2nd hand) the ones that don't get a long.  So yes, nothing you say is wrong.  There's just too much ego/animosity to sort through to get there

Honestly, the fact that soccer in this country is growing at a nice rate but the province with the 3rd biggest population and the best weather conditions for the sport is lagging so far behind other provinces in terms of player development is f***ing embarrassing.  Just disgraceful the lack of BC players on the national team.
