    Gold Cup 2019

I hope this isn't a trend developing where the best players choose not to go to the Gold Cup. I welcome a weaker Mexico since we will be playing them, but overall this is bad for the tournament and hence bad for CONCACAF.

Just make it every 4 years. The lure of the GC can be tainted a little when it happens every other year.

  4. I got to my first game on saturday against halifax. The new stadium is impressive, any negatives from a smallish crowd in the big stadium were offset by the excellent set up. Parking, concessions, seating, sound system etc etc. no temporary bleachers and port-a potties. It was loud enough my 4year old was covering his ears when we scored and MrsC and the RRR kept up the singing until the end. A pretty good crowd for a day that had threats of rain. If we can draw between 5-7g a game the owners should be pleased. Ali Musse stood out for me along with Bustos (although i expected him to be a cut above). Overall a good game, decent level of play and a great experience for my family. Did anyone else notice Bustos climb into the stands and take a bunch of pics with what I assumed were family members at games end?? Very nice to see.

  5. I don't know but it is in all aspects of life. Whether at my work or not-for-profit organizations and clubs, the idea of actually starting on time seems alien to people. If I say a meeting starts @ 7:00 pm, I expect you to be seated, settled and ready to start @7:00 bloody pm. I've had to give up hope that that will ever be true.

The GC is set up so that the US and Mexico can only play in the finals and not before. It’s a really bad setup.

Yes it would, which was my point. My point was that it shouldn't be that way. The group winners and runner-ups should be crossing over to the other side of the bracket, but they never set the GC up this way.

    Gold Cup 2019

Anyone else think we have a chance to pick points off Mexico here? I mean, yes they are deep, but it's also a one-off game and we have an x-factor in Davies. My concern though is that we steal a point (or dare I dream...3) points from Mexico, and they turn around and use that experience to figure us out in the semifinal and knock us out. Teams shouldn't have to face each other twice unless it's in the final.

Or better yet, convince Comnebol (sp?) that a joint Copa Americas held every 4 years (like the euros) would be better for both regions.

I know it's been mentioned before already but Lozano may miss through injury, Chicharito apparently as he awaits the birth of his child and Vela might ultimately decline the invitation. Along with Herrera, that leaves 4 big holes in Mexico's roster. They have plenty of firepower to step into those roles but it will make life more difficult for Mexico if all four are not there this summer. https://sportsday.dallasnews.com/soccer/soccer/2019/05/09/will-mexico-stars-carlos-vela-hirving-lozano-arlington-upcoming-matches-att-stadium

I haven’t noticed anyone else mention it, so I now feel like I’ve mis-seen the play, but how was it possible that the CB for Cavalry avoided a booking for that pull back a couple of minutes before the end of the match? Was that not Wheeldon who was already on a booking, so should have seen a red?

Actually, the ones who say that Victoria is a separate market are correct. Vancouver stations make no effort to reach out to Victoria viewers. Rogers only exists on OTA here as the transmitter hasn't broken down yet. Cable is the only way Vancouver stations can be reached and anything coming over the radio barely comes through most of the time. Its much easier to get media content from Bellingham and Seattle compared the Vancouver. A poorly set up webpage from New York shows how clueless people are about the market.

    OneSoccer

As OneSoccer develops, I would really like them to break more news, especially around injuries. What is the deal with Staro? How long is he expected to be out? Those sorts of things. Don't just tell us he is injured and didn't make the trip. We want more than that. The more information the better. It allows for more 'water cooler' talk as well between fans.

No, maybe you are trying to be a big man arguing on the basis of DMAs and officially sanctioned media markets. Which is irrelevant: a city like Yorkton is designated as a separate DMA from the rest of Saskatchewan, which is why, following your obstinacy, Yorkton will get special MediaPro treatment in case of a Saskatchewan team. It's senseless. While Vancouver and Victoria are together. I don't know why someone with no idea of BC media would want to argue with people who actually know how the press and markets work. And I can assure you: Victoria and the lower part of Vancouver Island need specific separate marketing, have distinct problems, and operate on different criteria than Vancouver. The folks at PFC actually did their homework in this regard, identifying specific reasons to NOT call the team by Victoria (as the it is not even the most populated municipality in Greater Victoria!!), to work on the VanIsle branding (which has no real history) and target all of the island Nanaimo south as a potential market.

I'm seeing the same thing. I'm in the Eastern time zone which is UTC -5:00. It seems like the schedule is based on the UTC day, so a game at 7pm Eastern, is at 12:00am UTC the next day, and as a result, it shows up on the following day's schedule. They should probably get on fixing that.

    Gold Cup 2019

This has always been an issue with the Gold Cup being held every two years. For years many countries, particularly Mexico would send their "B" squad to the tournaments in the years that did not qualify directly to the Confederations Cup. If you compare to the squads the year before the Confederations Cup, they are much more competitive than the non-Confederations years . In recent years, USA has won the tournament on these off years as Mexico would send their "B" squad. However, CONCACAF has recently changed this process so that both Gold Cup winners play eachother in a head to head playoff to qualify to Confederations Cup.

  33. I think it's great that we win and qualify for the U17 WC and still have disagreements re performance, coaching tactics etc. That's what happens on forums for all the top teams! Its all good guys, this is a positive development. So lets agree on the following 2 items: 1. Qualifying for a youth WC is important; for recognition of our youth prospects, solidifying the mentality that we have lacked in big games against Concacaf teams and to attract top level athletes for youth soccer throughout Canada. 2. We all had high expectations going in as there were some real jewels (Jayden, Kamron, Colyn and Rowe) on this squad and a few more made their case during the tournament. It is a challenge for any coaching team to put their stamp on a team when we have so few camps and friendlies, but there are indicators such as set plays on offence and defence; how we set up the defensive shield and structure when attacking that provides some insight re coaching. Almost all the boys come from MLS academies that have structured coaching and have experience in tournaments. The CSA coaching staff have been working closely with the 3 MLS academies over the past year presumably trying to incorporate some of their tactics, strategies etc that they intend to deploy for qualifiers. In other words, this was not a one week coaching camp. All of us whether as employees, professionals or family members are accountable to our employers, clients or family members and that holds true for soccer players, coaches and CSA executives. We should continue to expect the very best and the highest standards from our players, coaches and management. Looking forward to the USA game!

  35. So we are 2 weeks into the season and the lack of completion of their roster is frankly unforgivable. The team is in the middle of a Wednesday, Sunday, Wednesday, Saturday, Wednesday stretch and are trying to do so with a 19 man roster (minus MDJ). What is going on?

This kind of succession planning make me a lot more okay about Hutch's likely retirement post GC. He still leaves a hole in the midfield given his level of play, but with the depth at CM I feel... less bad about it.

  38. Yes, I am an ugly patriot. Like I said, if you can't afford it, .........you can't afford it. No worries. But I suspect most people on here will not miss $49, and personally I see this as no different than making a charitable donation. I will not watch the majority of CPL games, but I know I will catch all the Valour games. We are passionate about our CPL, why not support it, since we are all watching the away matches at the very least.

  42. I'm not a season ticket holder of any of the 7 teams. However I have purchased a OneSoccer subscription. I just feel like its my own little way to support the league. I have been pleasantly surprised in the level of play in the league so far. OneSoccer has been pretty good as well. Is it perfect? No. Could they improve some of the content? Sure. But the actual game presentations have been professional and way better then I expected from a start-up league.
    1 point
  43. I understand both points of view. I get what your saying and you are right. In order for you to buy one soccer it has to be worth it to you. On the other hand if the league is to be a success we need to support it in as many ways as possible. At the end of the day though I agree that no one should be saying you have to buy OneSoccer. However we need to realize the cost of producing, shooting, and covering each game is massive. With that being said I think having every game played broadcast is huge for the league.
    1 point
  44. I've done a really rough tally on Ticketmaster, of the Valour tickets sold so far for Thursday and it looks to be somewhere between 4800 to 5200 depending on how many are actually sold in that youth club section. I'm reasonably optimistic that we should have at least 5000.

  45. For the oldsters in here, Chromecast is a pretty good solution for the technically challenged. Very simple setup process and then you’d use your laptop or phone to ‘cast’ to your TV. Literally, there will be a button on the app. Press it and your TV now plays what the app is playing.

    TFC 2019 Season

Thought laryea had a solid game. Got forward well and looked dangerous at the same time kept track of their wing for the most part. Had some great tackles and dispossesions inside his box and around when they were attacking. A pleasant surprise in comparison to the dumpster fire that is ciman. I simply cannot believe this is the same player that first came to Canada and for me looked like one of the best in the league. Nice to see Fraser, Morgan and Chapman getting more minutes. Laryea was the standout Canadian for me though.

  48. I wasn't going to subscribe but really enjoyed watching the Wanderers re-match on CBC so I gave it a try. Loved the coverage Hamilton and Calgary this Wednesday. Had a big matchday type feeling with some good halftime analysis. Also figured life (and possibly finances) will keep me from getting to the bar for all the away matches so this would be great to watch on those occasions. Is 10$ a month reasonable for most casual sports fans to watch all the CPL games? Maybe not. However for the die hard fans like most of us it works out to like 2$ a game for the clubs we support. When you think of that way it has to be worth it. No? Outside of that we really need to support this project (The CPL). The more I see of it - the more experience it - the more I fall in love with it. The quality of the matches are great, the atmosphere the hard core supporters provide is awesome, the league is something we can call our own. If we let this opportunity to build on something special slip away we may never see anything like it again in our lifetime.

this is true but caution needs to be there. if you're just handing out teams to southern ontario cities to reach 16 teams in 2026 then something is wrong. just to note - moncton - quebec city - montreal - st. john's - saskatchewan - mainland bc - ottawa those are 7 markets that have had rumours that are also largely their own media markets that also often happen to be commerce or government capitals for their provinces (9 of 10). add gta2 and you have 15 teams. it's not hard to avoid clustering the first 16 teams too much, it might take time but it very well could be the safer route.

I think Niagara would be a good eventual market for a 2nd division team... To me CPL needs to be a true nationwide league and that means a team in Quebec (Laval or Quebec City) and Saskatoon....eventually Ottawa will have a team (Fury or not) also.... After that I think if/when you expand into Ontario it should be London....its far enough away from Toronto to have its own identity and could viably pull from K/W and Windsor at times....to me York, Forge and London are all separated enough to where it works
