York United - 2023 Season Thread

Recommended Posts

If there is one CPL team that has really blown it up from the get go, it is York.

Fail from the get go. They talk on and on about being in the largest soccer fan population in Canada blah blah blah.

ALL they had to do from season one was populate with 85%++ local yokels and that would have drawn fandom. The families, extended families would have been there every game REGARDLESS OF WINNING OR LOSING.

But no............. they totally blew it. They had at their fingertips some of the best bright young talent to bring on but no ....................... why would they do that?????

Related to your opinion, SFU build a very nice new stand, in the same neo-classical modernist style as the historical Erickson buildings on that campus, and of course they play higher level university sports. But the capacity is still low, and there's a track, you are a long way away from the pitch. So it's potentially right, solid and nice architecture--but then it's wrong for soccer and wrong for real fan experience

SFU Stadium – Perkins&Will

How does that roof stay up when covered in wet, heavy Burnaby mountain snow?

First & long interview with Angus McNab & Eoin O'Callaghan.

They're saying Baldassara wanted to build in support of community but didn't want to be a day-to-day serial sports investor. Money invested was their personal money rather than via Greenpark.

Now it's time for a refresh. Can't be framed in the same way as Edmonton given not financial issue related, squad makeup and market opportunity. The club will continue. Stadium solution is a key foundational issue being worked on. Woodbine is still on the table.

Active ownership discussions with HNW individuals and multi-club groups. Complained that only legacy media at doubleheader last week was Neil Davidson. Other Toronto-based football media like to complain about Canadian football but don't show up. Only 2 major stories done about York United were done by local non-football media.

I think what's happening with prospective groups is somewhat similar with Atletico who was talking to the league and pulled the trigger once Ottawa and a stadium became available.

I'm guessing that the groups the league is currently talking too are now being told that the Toronto market just became available with an existing club with players under contract and with land put aside for a new stadium next to a new casino district.

This should also attract new investors as well.

We'll see. I don't disagree with the league buying out the Baldassara who obviously had no vision for the club and what to do with it

I mean, a lot of these reasons are why you kept arguing the Baldassara would never walk away from it.

Take a step back.  What exactly would new owners be buying?  The name rights to a club that has already changed once and if it's relocated needs to be rebranded again.  A current stadium location that's untenable. Players under contract that missed the playoffs last year and are 0-2 to start this one.  None of that is of value.

Now, could the rights to the GTA be attractive?  Maybe, but it's never sounded like you'd be able to get that exclusively.  The "promise" of a new stadium doesn't seem that close, though I'm not saying it never happens.  This seems more like a scenario where a new group/investor is more interested in letting York fold and then once a new stadium is actually built (or is close enough that it's a guarantee to happen) starting a new team from scratch.

A bit like some of the GTA-based CanPL enthusiasts on here then. Their posting history suggests that they hate MLS but they still appear to be much more likely to wind up at BMO Field for a game than at York Lions Stadium.

Interview with the CEO of the newly announced pro women's team in Toronto. Why in this thread? The stadium talk.

I've queued up the video. She talks about not having a stadium confirmed, but says it's in the works. When asked what an ideal stadium would be like she said soccer specific a couple times and repeated the 5,000 number that Andi lead her with. I think the Woodbine plan is for about 8,000 but I do wonder if she is talking about Woodbine. She also mentions needing the proper training facilities, which was also part of the Woodbine proposal. And of course women's soccer was mentioned in the Woodbine proposal as well.

If York United and AFC Toronto are both angling for this stadium to be built, that may increase the chances of it actually happening. Fingers crossed!

Beer promotion for their next 2 home games

Much better! I've been to 2 games and after the second I thought I should probably drink less beer at the games, just because they are $11 per can!

Darn it! I swear I checked earlier and it looked like we were in the clear. But it looks like you are right.
