Leagues Cup hasn't got a linear tv deal in Mexico yet. It was orginally excluded from MLS Season Pass in Mexico but now it is only on MLS SP. 1-month free trial now available in Mexico.

this is missing the aspect of liga MX fans in the US (not mexico), those are the actual target audience of leagues cup and there's a deal with univision

USL owners are set to vote on pro/rel in early August. If it is a yes, then further work will be done toward implementation. They're looking to set up a middle league between the current Championship and League One. It was noted L1 entry fee is US$5 million.

It would create questions about the US men's soccer pyramid. It’s unclear whether the USL would be looking to sanction its highest level as first division competing with the MLS or run two second- or third-division sanctioned leagues. They would need to meet USSF D1 standards - though, it will need updating as currently there is no mention of clubs achieving D1 status based on sporting merit.

Likely hurts MLS NP. It would be a framework for future CPL pro/rel.

Juicy quotes from various unnamed USL owners:

If you somehow think continuing on our current trajectory will make us competitive and where we all want to be, you’re fooling yourself. The reality is MLS will destroy USL long-term (on our current trajectory). But if USL successfully adopts pro/rel and can get division one sanctioning (for the top level), it’ll be transformed.

USL is in a great position because it can adopt promotion/relegation. MLS have backed themselves into a corner because how do you tell San Diego that they’re going to pay $500 million dollars (for an expansion fee) and maybe will get relegated?

Promotion/relegation is truly one of the best constructs in pro sports, full stop. I believe that it would take USL to a completely new level.

Pro/rel, on its own, isn’t a magic bullet. Pro/rel can be done effectively and ineffectively.

Messi isn't there to improve the team.  He may do that, but he was signed moreso to promote "the product" and to increase awareness of "the franchise."

Which is exactly the point of the article, it is still interesting to think of it as a football transfer, not solely as a marketing exercise.

A really good article.  I found it to be hard on Messi.  Fair yes, but hard.

It's fair, though the part it leaves out is that it's also a bit of commentary on Inter Miami.  He's going to a team that's been poorly built and expected to raise it, and seemingly their only solution is "throw money at it", which doesn't work as well in a cap league. If he was going to say LAFC or Seattle (teams that have a better understanding of how to utilize the leagues mechanisms at their disposal), then his play might actually have a bigger impact.

competition for farsi?

Wow. Big loss for the Whitecaps. Behind Cubas and Gauld, he was their most important and best player. He combined so well with those 2 also. Am curious to see what they will get back in return. they originally paid $900,000 GAM for him.

Bush league to change your rules mid season

It doesn't really matter, if it increases viewership, attendance, sponsorships astronomically, why take issue with it? Narduch, nobody cares, especially considering it will make the league a lot more appealing to watch.
