General MLS Talk 2023

Being in Vegas for the Nations League Final, I saw 2 guys in Sporting KC kits watching their MLS match on their phone in the MGM Grand Sportsbook. I asked the guys, "Since you are betting, why don't you get the casino to put the match on one of the big screens?" They said that the sportsbook didn't have access to Apple TV.

A not minor impact of the MLS streaming deal that I had not previously thought of.

They don't need access to Apple tv. MLS Season Pass is available to US businesses via Direct TV. For Canadian establishments, it is through a generically named company called Pay TV.

I'm with Bell Fibe TV at home and I noticed that a couple of channels are set aside for MLS matches for commercial establishments.

MLS sources confirmed the league is nearing Apple’s required subscription threshold that kick-starts an agreement for the company to share subscription revenue with MLS. The league’s players, per terms of the new CBA, would also receive 12.5% of the increase in media revenue this year if the amount exceeds $100 million of the 2022 media compensation, which was about $65 million when excluding fees paid to the USMNT.

Rumor has it that with the arrival of Lionel Messi to MLS, Apple are going to offer $1 Billion over 5 years to have exclusive rights to the Copa Libertadores, which would have a new format and unite Brazil, Argentina, Mexico and United States/Canada football into a single tournament with the final being held in the USA. The new tournament would be held over a 6 month period with teams from Brazilian Primera, Argentina Primera, MLS and LigaMX. It would represent a full fledged South and North American Champions League equivalent to rival UEFA and create more soccer exposure to North America and South America at a global scale, with Lionel Messi as the driving force behind this.

Optus Sport, who have the Premier League and La Liga rights in Australia, have just contacted all subscribers to say that we can get free MLS Season Pass for the remainder of the current season. If we wish to renew at the conclusion of the freebie, it'll be $22.99/month, which is more than I pay Optus for every PL, La Liga, and WSL match, plus selected J-League and K-League matches, and every WWC match. Suffice it to say, I'll take the freebie for this season, but won't be renewing.

i wonder how that tourney would be scheduled.  the travel demands would be heavy, esp. if you were flying from Canada to say Argentina.  Midweek fixtures don't feel like a realistic option.  Teams in MLS would have league play, US Open / Cdn championship, Concacaf Cup, Leagues Cup, and now this new tourney... 5 ongoing competitions.  That is a lot of soccer!

I get it that Argentina and Brazil have the most competitive clubs, but I wonder how other Conmebol nations are feeling about this?  I would love to see Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay and even Bolivian clubs have a pathway to take part.

The Strongest vs Portland Timbers in La Paz.....I'd watch that!

Maybe this replaces Leagues Cup?

Also there are rumors MLS wants to pull put of the Open Cup

Leagues Cup hasn't got a linear tv deal in Mexico yet. It was orginally excluded from MLS Season Pass in Mexico but now it is only on MLS SP. 1-month free trial now available in Mexico.

Liga MX has typically let individual clubs or group of clubs sell media rights. So, selling rights as a league was breaking new ground that so far hasn't worked out.

It appears too many in Mexico view Leagues Cup as pre-season friendlies and too many MLS only matches that is of no interest. And maybe some didn't realize not all Mexicans like Messi since Argentina has been responsible for knocking out Mexico in 3 of the last 5 World Cups.

If you have LG smart tv in Canada, MLS SP is also free for 2 months.

The bolded really doesn't matter considering they're still going to trip over themselves to watch him play.

Happy to see the fans are more savvy then the dumbasses that run MLS.

The one weird thing I noticed is that Liga MX has actually started already. So they will also be taking a break for League Cup just like MLS. So technically it isn't a pre season tournament for them.
