1. Survive.

2. Make the playoffs at least every other year.

I frankly don't care much about player continuity if we're bringing back players from a losing team. Do you think having Daryl Fordyce or even Willy Akio were selling more than a handful of tickets? Only if it means winning.

This is all I want. Survive as a club and make the playoffs every other year.

Sadly, a very low bar that the club hasn't met yet.

I'd like about the same as everyone else, survive, win sometimes.  But I would like to see them get a Chris Walby type or a Milt Stegal etc.  Someone pretty good (local would be better) that is good within the community and media to be the face of the team.  I dont mind the turnover, but it would be nice if they could snag a guy that would get recognized as "the valour" guy and help the team spread its roots in Manitoba.

I don't know about their quality in terms of the community or media, nor whether they could be the face of the team, but off the top of my head, local players or those who consider themselves Winnipeggers are:

  • Marco Bustos
  • Kianz Froese
  • Tyler Attardo
  • Josip Zorica
  • Leotrim Reka
  • Daniel Sagno
  • Dylan Hooper
  • Marques Scott
  • Caden Tomy
  • Caelan Budhoo
  • Kyle Hiebert
  • Federico Pena
  • Raphael Ohin
  • Kyle Gomes
  • Stefano, Mossimo and Tavio Ciccarelli
  • Zachary Toupin
  • Julian Avila-Good
  • Jacob Tsai

And, from FC Manitoba:

  • Evan Barker
  • Aaron Hidalgo-Mazzei
  • Ethan Cabral
  • Enrique Garcia
  • Kevin Garic
  • Ilyich Gharahmadani
  • Zack Greenfield
  • Visar Hashani
  • Andrew Metcalfe
  • Sergio Molina
  • Diego Reveco
  • Damian Truong

One addition to the list Georges Mukumbilwa, Pacific FC, grew up in Winnipeg.  Was in Valour training camp one year but they let him get away ☹️.

...and S. Artemenko.

...and Ali Musse grew up in Winnipeg.

How the f**k did I forget Artemenko? A few of those players have actually been at training camps at Valour at some point.

You missed the most obvious and hands down best choice for the face of Manitoba soccer: Joey Torchia.

But, where is he now?

I have absolutely no idea. There is a thread on here that mentioned that he was in an autobody shop in Winnipeg (back in 2005) and his name pops up for a team in a 35+ league, but that's about it.

Always going to be plenty of turn over in this league, for most of the teams anyway, but you have to have something resembling continuity in the structure if you want any hope of improving.  Starting from zero year after year is just going to the casino.

Geez, here's hoping we hear about some signings from Valour that give me more hope for 2023, 'cause I'm still waiting.

Welcome to another episode of It's A Team Sport Ball Boys and Girls! The show where we acknowledge we cannot do this alone, and so have brought in some backup, and we picked some good ones. Today we sit down with friend and veteran of FC 13 Jordan Haynes, and masterclass defender Abdou Samake, both now defenders for Valour FC of the CPL, after their move from Pacific FC. We cover what it's like changing within the CPL, how they liked the World Cup, and what is the best chicken wing flavour. Still more info than Forge publish, at least. What is it now? 3mths until the start of the season and absolutely no roster news from them other than the 2 draft picks and Krutzen training with Whitecaps...... Unless you go by Wikipedia.

Yeah, it always comes down to money in the end. It's just frustrating seeing the team pretty much rebuilt year after year. I mean, what do you, personally, want to see Valour do? Actually, what does anyone in this thread want to see Valour do? This could make for an interesting discussion.

I've always wanted to see them qualify and go for a run in CONCACAF CL. I would value that over CPL playoffs.

Is it from this season there is an extra CL spot for the CPL? I imagine it will be for the league winner and regular season winner. I haven't seen anything mentioned about it though.

Yes. There are 2 spots now. For the 2024 CCL

Rocco Romeo signed by Vancouver ☹️

Ug.

The move of course begs the question "why?".  Why does Romeo go west into an unknown situation instead of staying put with Valour?  Doubt that it has anything to do with Dos Santos already having a player in his pocket who made Romeo surplus to requirements. Doubt that very much.

More than likely $$ and length of contract (which hasn't been disclosed). Yeah, it is an unknown situation, but he is, what, the 6th player signed? They would have had more cash available and, as it stands, he is guaranteed to start every game.

As bad as it sounds, I hope Meki doesn't get a contract from his trial and returns to Valour now.

I think the issue with Valour is ownership isn't willing to spend the money, Valour is probably spending the minimum of the cap versus Forge who are probably at the maximum of the cap.  Very few of the Valour players appear to have option years on their contracts versus York and HFX who have the majority of their players on extended contracts or at a minimum have option years on them.

Lets take Forge as the first example here. When the CPL was founded, Forge started the 2019 season with a large number of players Bobby had at Sigma (around 14 I believe). They wouldn't have taken much convincing to follow him to a new CPL club in the first place. Given their success over the years, they can afford to offer more towards the higher end of the cap. Plus, Bobby appears to be VERY loyal towards his players which would probably equal longer contracts. Hell, even some of the more recent signings they have made from the States, Bobby knew from Sigma.

HFX seem to use the "optional year(s)" clause fairly often but, given the recent departure of Hart, that would explain their recent "overhaul". They also use a fair number of younger players who would be easy to get aboard on a lower contract, thus allowing more cap available for more "senior" players.

York, I believe would be a lot more consistent in terms of players and contract lengths if they didn't find themselves in the same "visa issues" boat as Valour over the past few seasons. Nash is getting settled with his team and York (worryingly for us) started to find their groove last season. If not for the goalkeeping injury (mini) crisis they experienced, things could have been much worse for us.

Now, onto the subject of Valour and their ownership. I, personally, believe that, despite wanting the success, they aren't willing to speculate in order to accumulate. They would rather "develop" a team that could win. However, they seem to have this weird idea of developing when they wont allow more than a 1yr contract or a little more on wages. Development takes time and patience. Sure, they have plans for the High Performance squad to turn into an academy at some point, but that doesn't help the side now.

Best thing for Valour to do, would be to splash more towards the higher end of the cap on a new spine for the team, give them deals that run for a couple of years and build around them. Better yet, build around a Canadian spine with a Winnipegger or 2, give the fans someone they can really get behind. Come on, there has to be another Bustos out there somewhere. You could even bring Artemenko back for a season or two. The fans would definitely get behind him.

Most if not all of these players are not pro-quality. Id be curious where Kyle Gomes is he's a talented player with some injuries. Thought he was in Spain. I think he would be CPL level if he didnt have some serious injuries in youth.

Yeah, unfortunately a lot are far from CPL quality. There is no chance of a Bustos return and I can't see us putting the cash up to bring Froese or Attardo back early. There is always the chance we could get lucky with someone from the open trials or pick up a surprise package from FC Manitoba.

Last I heard, Gomes was at the FC Malaga City Academy but, going by the ever reliable "Transfermarkt", he is now unattached.
