Not sure why he isnt starting more. Is it a consistency thing?

Can’t say I’ve watched much Watford these past few months, so unsure, but likely. He’s also their youngest MF by a lot, so they may be going with the guys they think can keep them afloat.

We rate him much higher than any Watford  manager has. Watford always seems to bring in a midfielder at halftime. He has either been going off or soming on

It's funny, cause after the last few weeks with limited minutes I was sure he was gonna bag one today if he came on from starting on the bench again.  He always steps up, he believes in himself so much.

I have no doubt he will force the manager to play him.  Having watched quite a bit of Watford, even without the CANMNT goggles, I think he's one of their better players.

From the little I've read on Watford fan forums, most fans absolutely consider him one of the most talented players they have and without a doubt the highest ceiling/most potential. It still just comes down to consistently putting it together for him.

It is what he does execptional well, run with the ball and finish.

That said no manager needs to play him all the time, if he doesn't do the other things a midfielder needs to do. He seemed to pass it well enough but against one of the powerhouses of the division, the stats say he had zero tackles.  They (and we) can't just have him be an attacker midfielder, they have enough offensive options.

I am reminded of the US Balogun goal against use when he jogged with Reyna in the midfield allowing the American freedom to pick the pass.

Yup, Watford clearly using him when they need offence and not to defend.  I was convinced he would've developed both sides of his game, but not looking like it.

It was Osorio who gave up on Reyna, let him run past & pass to Balogun in NL final. Watford have played Kone in a more advanced midfield position this year. In 2023 (2022/23 season) he was playing in front of Choudhury, who played the #6 role, and Kone was tasked with winning & recovering the ball in front of Hamza and he did a decent job in the games I watched. It depends on the role the manager wants him to play. I haven't watched him a lot this season, so I cant speak as to his work behind the ball, but if he is playing in a more advanced/attacking position he may have less responsibility to win/recover the ball.

I was wondering about that as well, I was pretty sure that one was also Osorio, but could not be bothered to go back and check.  Nice catch.

I just rewatched the whole sequence.

Osorio didn't leave him, he got beat straight up, and left behind.

Kone has a chance but then jogged beside him.

No midfielder is exempt from winning the ball back. But he he came on for one of holding players, they had Asprilla, Denis, Bayo and Chakvetadze (sp?) as attacking players, need at least a couple of the front 6 to take some defensive responsibility.

Too much football to watch to be able say I have seen him that much lately but since Cleverly came in - a defensively responsibility midfielder in life - he does get left out of a lot of critical game situations.

Massive talent and great to watch but a few question have crept in for me in the last year, especially if we are not going let him just be an attacking midfielder (which we can't afford.)

Back with CFM he seemed like he'd be the ideal prototypical 8, strong on both sides of the ball.  Watford certainly uses him more when offence is needed.  I don't know the team enough to know if they have specific specialists at DM that they rely on for defensive duties or if its because Kone isn't doing the job defensively.  I'm confident he can do it, perhaps still has some stuff to learn at this level, but he'll get there.

Perhaps Kone is more of a 10 than he is an 8. I'd love to see him tried out as a 10 for us as that's a position we've been sorely lacking in our program for a while. David can do a decent impression of a 10 when asked, but he's much better as a Poacher 9. Wondering if something like this could work as a potential Best 11 for Canada:

David - Larin

Kone

Choiniere - Staq - Buchanan

Davies - Miller - Bombito - Johnston

Crepeau

I can see it from him personally, absolutely has all the tools.

But Buchanan's not a central player.  Him and Davies at wing back, Cornelius in for Johnston, and I guess bring in Piette for Larin. Be an interesting setup.

Or go for offence, leave Larin and bring in left back and do a diamond, but that makes Eustaquio sit and hold.
