Guys the 4-1-4-1 is just the trapping counter attack variant of the 4-3-3.  It's still predicated on a really good midfield triangle and speedy wingers to make it work.

When you look at the strength of this team it's a really logical formation to use.  We have some guys outside who have speed but not necessarily great skill.  This sets them deeper back so that its defensively responsible but on the turnover they're open in space to exploit the gaps.

Because we traditionally don't have great possession and skill but we have good athleticism it makes sense to use this.

When your best attacking options are Hoilett and Ricketts you want to put them in a position to use their speed.

Its also why Osorio doesn't fit the formation well, because it takes away his big strength as a LM- passing accuracy and forced him to be a speedy player that he isn't.

If Johnson can get healthy then a midfield 3 of Hutch, Arfield and Johnson would be a really good combination for us.

Hoilett, Ricketts and Akindele outside and Larin & now Hamilton (looks like in the future) up front.

We've developed and recruited some quality players recently.

Very true.

In midfield, we can field 3 players at the same time with real quality now.

Hutchinson is a top player when it comes to CONCACAF, and he's typically the most talented midfielder on the park, unless we play the USA or Mexico, in which case he gives us a weapon that's equal to what we face.

The problem for a while has been that he's by himself. He hasn't had another quality midfielder next to him ever since he and de Guzman gave us a competitive one-two punch in the centre of midfield. We all know Julian is not the same player anymore. Over the last few years, Johnson has emerged as the guy to step in, and despite his reputation MLS, he doesn't stand out in CONCACAF in the same way Hutchinson does (and Julian did). However, I think Arfield will.

Arfield showed against Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan that he was a cut above everyone on the field. The way he clearly stood out is the way in which Hutchinson clearly stands out. To put Johnson next to both of them gives us the strongest middle three in a long time, perhaps ever.

The best part is that they are all a little different.

Hutchinson is suburb at keeping the ball and has the technical skill allows him to navigate through difficult situations with ease. He also gets around the park and has some attacking talent in him.

Arfield has the technical skill to navigate through difficult situations AND has a nature in him to push forward and put the other team on the back foot, whether it be with a through ball or by taking players on. His can deliver from set pieces as well. He takes the good qualities of Kyle Bekker, combines them with the "pitbull" nature of Ian Hume and demonstrates a higher soccer IQ than both. I was very impressed with his decision making and I think he is going to combine very well with Hutchinson.

Johnson is valuable because he has that bite and competitive fearlessness about him. He is also direct and can push the game in the same way Arfield does. That's two players our opponents have to pay attention to. Johnson and de Guzman (the current version) are easy for defences to deal with when paired together, but Arfield's dynamic nature will open pockets for Johnson to pop up in (and he's great at doing that - see the TFC goal in the Voyageurs cup or some of his goals from the 2014 Timbers season). I think Johnson will become more effective with Arfield beside him.

I seriously think by adding Arfield with Hutchinson and Johnson, we have a midfield 3 that can go toe-for-toe with the USA, Costa Rica and Mexico. We still don't have the depth, but over 90 minutes where anything can happen, I am happy with what we can now put out there.

Agree 100%

Just don't forget about Petrasso as wing option either. :)

So will they decide prior to the Canada game? And why would they suspend Honduras? Sorry I don't speak Spanish

The headline is a bit sensationalist.  What's happened is that FENAFUTH (governing body of football in Honduras) postponed a meeting at which they were to ratify new statutes from FIFA.  The meeting got postponed, so FIFA and CONCACAF rattled their sabres.  The meeting will happen, the new FIFA rules will be accepted, and no-one will be suspended.

Jorge Luis Pinto is a greater troll than Eduard Khil

The coach of Honduras obviously OKed playing us in San Pedro Sula at 3pm but complains that it's too hot to play in Brasilia (Olympic Team) in the afternoon heat!

Our future qualifications match should be played in the most frigid place possible when it's outside of the summer. They all seem to lose their mojo when it's cold

Funny how not a single person who thinks like this has ever been in a position of power at the CSA.

So the Hondurans are riding a wave of optimism into the quarterfinals of the Olympics. With the crowd in Brasilia behind them, they drew Argentina 1-1 and advanced on goal difference.

Fuckin' Honduras.

There'll be 2 (Acosta and Palacios) maybe 3 (Quioto? Lopez?) players from that squad on the field playing us. Don't worry about it.

So you're saying Lozano, who scored at the Cuscatlán during their crucial WCQ in March and has at least 18 senior caps (if Wikipedia can be trusted) isn't going to be in the squad and/or won't see the field on September 2nd? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthony_Lozano

I'll take that bet! What do I win? ;)

Still Honduras is going to be confident going into their matches if they perform well at the Olympics. Hopefully South Korea knocks them out
