I honestly don't like those penalties. Just because on the control the ball is out. 

But I appreciate it is a foul on the player even if the ball is not playable.

I agree. There's no way Davies is getting to that ball ... it is out!

The point is, of course, in the midfield if a ball is going out and you hack down a guy near it, it's a foul. Regardless. A penalty is just a foul in the box, there is no rule about the ball being playable near a touch line, end line, a foul is a foul. That is why it is called. 

But I was always perturbed by a long control with no chance of playing and then looking for the foul in the box.

In soccer, you get few opportunities to score, bad teams don't take advantage when they get the chance.  The ref has just given you the get out of jail card to reward your hard work and you chose to stay in jail.  Not likely he'll give you another one.  Life is usually pretty simple.

Laryea on the wrong side of the ball (possible penalty), Laryea being cocky with little touches and losing it (leading to the Cornelius foul), Laryea is a sloppy player sometimes and I get now, and after watching him these games with Whitecaps, why he was not deemed fit for Forest. He has a lot to sharpen up, and then he's arrogant on the pitch.
