2004-born Japanese-Canadian CB with Yokohama's U18. 6'3.

Thought he deserves his own thread, he's an intriguing prospect and someone who we should keep an eye on. He's U-20 eligible as well so I think the CSA should start sending out feelers.

A 17 year old CB that is 6’3”.  Hells yeah.  Let’s get this kid in the pipeline.

Transfermarkt has him listed as a Japanese citizen.

Take transfer market with a grain of salt for young/unknown players. They will default to saying citizen of the league they're playing in when they don't have info. A few years ago, my friend was playing in the second tier of Australia. He was listed as Australian on transfrmarkt. He was definitely not Australian.

Again we have zero youth programs on both mens and women's. We are losing talent.

Yes, basically zero for men.

But some for women because of Own the Podium money. Individual coaches for 3 age group teams. These teams get at least a camp or two before a Concacaf/FIFA tourney along with some friendlies. u17 players also have 3 regional training centres and a couple of teams that play in 2 regional leagues. Are the results there? Only in some areas.

Duals aren't an issue for the women so far - only lost one notable due to Birarda's proclivities.

They're actually in all three of regional L1 leagues. The "Whitecaps" in L1BC is actually the Canadian women's BC regional training centre team. Soccer Canada merged their program with the Caps.

It seems like he has been promoted to the first team of Yokohama.

According to that, it looks like he'll be going to the first team from next season.

I wonder how Japanese citizenship laws would affect this. I think dual nationals have have until 22 to decide which citizenship they want to keep, so if he wants to play for Japan, I think he has to relinquish his Canadian citizenship by then.

Correct

It’ll be tricky to get him to play for us- he’s raised and now plays in Japan, and he’d have to relinquish his citizenship to play for us which is a lot to ask for. I think it’s fair for him to expect “guaranteed” playing time if he were to make that switch, and for that to happen, he’d have to take some really big steps really soon. He’s got a little under 4 years.

He played earlier this month with the Japanese U18 side in Spain.  He was named captain in at least one match (vs Belgium).

I go past his school on my way to work, so I'll put a bug in his ear if I ever run into him.  However, I'm sure this one's a lost cause, so I suppose there won't ever be a need to correct the spelling of his name on this thread.

A little update...he is with the first team again this year, and has made a start in the Emperors Cup, playing 90 min in July. Played a handful of minutes in one other match, a lesser cup, I believe. No minutes in the league.

He's still only 19, is absolutely massive in size, and is the only defender under the age of 22 on the main roster, so he's obviously seen as a youth prospect of some note.

At the time I found out about him I was interesting in getting him into camp but it's probably impossible. Japan doesn't allow dual-citizenship so he wouldn't be able to become Canada eligible without losing his Japanese passport, and why on earth would he ever do that? The implications go far beyond soccer.
