Gold Cup 2023

Recommended Posts

The biggest wildcard for the Gold Cup is the Nations League.....if teams make the Nations League semifinals and finals and send their "A" squad to that tournament with the Gold Cup starting less than ten days after do they give some of their stars some time off in the summer? Especially guys based in Europe who have had such a condensed schedule with a winter World Cup etc...

It's basically what the US did after they won the Nations League in 2021...sent pretty much a different team to the Gold Cup...I think at minimum the four teams who make the Nations League finals will rotate some guys through

Scenarios for Gold Cup qualification today.

Nicaragua qualifies if
-they draw against Trinidad

Trinidad and Tobago qualifies if
-they win against Nicaragua

French Guiana qualifies if
-they draw against Guatemala

Guatemala qualifies if
-they win against French Guiana

I hope Trinidad qualify and Guatemala beats the FG. Just so the unofficial teams have a harder time of making the final tournament.

Yeah, I'm definitely cheering for Guatemala, and I have a slight preference for T&T over Nicaragua, completely due to the memory of T&T's golden generation that made it to the World Cup (and lost to us in the 2000 Gold Cup) so there is some hope that they could raise their level.

Nicaragua and Guatemala have both qualified. All direct qualification spots have been taken now. There is just one spot left in the prelims that will be taken by either Bonaire (non-FIFA country, so boo!) or Sint Maarten.

It looks like the preliminary round draw is part of the main draw, on April 14th.

Sint Maarten takes the final spot in the preliminary round with their away win over US Virgin Islands. Bonaire was unable to defeat Turks and Caicos Islands at home, so 3 of the 4 non-FIFA members will be in the qualification round.

So if we go based on the current CONCACAF rankings and the same draw format as 2021, the pots are:

Pot A: Mexico, USA, Costa Rica, Canada

Pot B: Panama, Jamaica, Haiti, Honduras,

Pot C. Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Cuba

Pot D. Qatar, Playoff winners

Group of life: Canada, Haiti/Honduras, Nicaragua, Sint Maarten

Group of death: Canada, Panama, El Salvador, Qatar

Edit: After closer inspection, we may see Guatemala and Honduras trade places before the draw. Honduras as a pot 3 team would be a definite banana peel for someone, regardless of recent results.

Do we want the easiest possibly group to deepen the squad, do we want the toughest group for the most competitive experience, or a combination?

Toughest: Panama (or Jamaica), Honduras, Qatar

Easiest: Guatemala, Nicaragua (tempted to go Cuba), Prelim Winner (T&T are a realistic underdog)

Tougher Combination: Haiti, El Salvador, Qatar

Easier Combination: Guatemala, Honduras, Curacao (arguably best team in Prelim)

Whoever we draw, this really beats a few years ago when we'd be in (hopefully) pot 2 looking up at pot 1 and hoping to be drawn with Costa Rica or Panama instead of Mexico or the US.  Now I honestly don't really care who we draw because I expect us to win.

Easiest because you still have to play.

And you want to finish 1st in the group to get a better quarter final draw.

They'll gerrymander the draw so that Mexico and the US don't face each other until the final, as long as each finishes first in their group.

So we'll have a US or Mexico semi final, like last time.

They've already allocated which group the 4 highest-ranked teams will be in:

Group A United States
Group B Mexico
Group C Costa Rica
Group D Canada

The 2021 Gold Cup also saw the US and Mexico in A and B (Mexico was in A, the US was in B). If this year's knockout stage bracket follows the 2021 tournament bracket, 1D/2A was a quarter-final matchup, as was 2D/1A. 1D/2A's path from the quarter-final led to a semi-final with the winner of 1B/2C.

Not sure how much that matters until the draw on April 14th.

That is why I think they can announce locations; those will tell us where the USA, Mexico, Costa Rica and us will play our group stage matches.

In other words, if things go chalk we get Mexico in the semi-finals. Kinda hoped we might get the US first. I feel like Mexico will wilt as the tournament goes on, whereas the US depth ensures they will still be fresh in the final. Here’s hoping 2A is a soft touch in the QF - Guatemala would be ideal.

There is another way to think about this though: It was always set up before to guarantee a Mexico vs US final assuming both teams won out.  Canada's play now makes that no longer a guarantee.  Wonder if they might worry less about setting up the Mexico/US final now, and just allowing the match up to happen in the semi-finals if that's how it goes.  Heck, could even have a proper draw for once.

Well last time it was better than previous editions when they gamed the 12 team tournament so that even if the US or Mexico were 2nd in the group they still wouldn't play a group winner.

The expansion to 16 teams did away with that option.
