Updates:

"Jayson Leutwiler is fit again now while wearing a face mask.“He is a great professional and a great guy but he will have to wait his turn because Mark (Halstead) has been very good since stepping in and deserves to hold the jersey at the minute."

Despite losing his spot as a starter, Shrewsbury want to sign him again before the transfer window shuts because he is free to leave in the summer. He is in talks with them.

After missing 8 games he started again today. Shrewsbury (in the relegation zone) played the top team in League 1 (Burton) and won!

He also got a yellow card for his trouble.

Leutwiler's Shrewsbury just won vs Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup! The day before he said a few things about his face mask and not wanting to do a "Petr Cech" for the rest of his career. A few quick words about his recovery physically and psychologically.

4-minute interview pre Manchester United clash with Leutwiler:

They play at 2:45pm Eastern/11:45am Pacific (LIVE on Sportsnet World).

EDIT: Also Shrewsbury have good momentum whilst Man U lost to Midtjylland today in Europa League after losing on Saturday at Sunderland. Can Shrewsbury make it 3 loses in a row for Manchester United?

Also the local paper of note the Shropshire Star has started calling him the "Swiss-Canadian" instead of simply "Swiss" like they have in the past. http://www.shropshirestar.com/sport/shrewsbury-town-fc/2016/02/16/jayson-leutwiler-worth-20-points-to-town/

Does this actually mean anything? I'd like to think so!

His game against Manchester United is in less than 11 hours.

Thanks to BuWnJjiw_bigger.jpegfor sharing this piece published late Sunday night in the Telegraph:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/manchester-united/12167714/Meet-Jayson-Leutwiler-the-Shrewsbury-United-star-who-already-knows-how-it-feels-to-humble-Manchester-United.html

The title is misleading but it contains cool info about his journey to Shrewsbury; but best of all has this quote:

"Leutwiler is exploring an international career with Canada"

I mean, WTF does "exploring" mean? Playing for the CanMNT is not something you stroll into! He must have been contacted by the CSA. He wouldn't say something like that to The Telegraph unless he was looking into his one time switch or will be called in March but can't say shit yet (publicly). I mean, Tierney at Waking the Red said just over 6 months ago "he would consider joining the team should they give him the option." To go from "would consider" to "exploring" has got to mean it's a door that was opened to him by the CSA.

EDIT:

For the Gold Cup we had Kenny, Lars and Quillan.
For Belize WCQs we had Borjan, Kenny and Crépeau.
For November WCQs Floro dropped Crépeau for Simon Thomas.
In Jan/Feb Floro brings Crépeau back as a starter for a friendly.
If we follow Floro's logic, for WCQ/Tournaments, bring your top two keepers + someone you want to look at. 100% he wants to look at Leutwiler.

Unless I missed it elsewhere in the story, that was a photo caption and not a quote.

So what would he be making at Shrewsbury United?

Listening to that interview before the FA Cup game, he says he thinks the club wants him back next year and he wants to sign. He is keen, very it seems. They are struggling to stay in League One so that is a bit odd, since if they go down salaries may drop as well. I understand Shrewsbury would not be at all high-paying, but have to ask. What sort of salary would he be on?

The difference in salary between the Premier League and lower leagues is very big. In the Championship the average salary is between £4.000 and £5.000 a week. The top players in the Championship earn around £8.000 to £9.000 a week. The average salary in League One is between  £1.700 and £2.500, and in League Two it’s between £1.300 and £1.500.

2000 pounds a week is about $200,000 canadian  a year.

Regardless, to make that kind of money in a 3rd or 4th division is still pretty impressive.

I simply assumed that if he was happy with his money, in a modest club at the bottom of League One, it was because he was getting over a hundred thousand pounds a year. I would expect him to be making a bit less than average, the club has got to have one of the lowesst budgets in the division.

The real question is if they would guarantee him the same salary in League Two, or nearly.

That is what makes English third tier the absolutely best in the world, IMO. Having a single division, with big clubs, gives it a prestige no other third tier has anywhere.

At second tier I'd say they are there with the other major leagues, it is after 2nd that England really stands out, all the way down to National.

That depends on where you live in the UK. London is much more expensive than the rest of the country.

I can't imagine shrewsbury being too expensive, I would say it's similar to where I live so fairly cheap and he can be living very comfortably if on 1k a week. I think Haber is/was on that (no idea why but it sticks in my head) and I'd be inclined to think Jayson is earning more than that or at least the same

Remember lads, Leutwiler was signed when the Shrews were in League 2 and he was free after having just been released from Middlesborough after playing only about 3½ games for them in 2 years. I bet you they bought him cheap. He was a risky buy and an investment - it paid off.

The contract he is negotiating for now (to start June 2016) is the one where he should actually make some decent money because he has had almost two years of quality playing time and good results.

Coach Mellon was also the guy who bought Vardy for £1million before selling him to Leicester for much more so maybe he's got a good eye for of underated players/ late bloomers

The thing is that the salaries in the football league are highly variable, particularly at the top and bottom of player categories.

You have top players in the Championship earning nearly Premier wages (Derby, QPR, Hull, etc.) and even some top guys in League Two pulling in up to 3-4k a week.  While at the bottom end of leagues one and two there are guys just pulling in 30-60k a year.

Leutwiler is probably earning a decent salary as he was a free transfer and was part of Shrews promotion squad which all received a 20 percent increase on their League Two wages, which would have been likely in the upper third of that league.  Reports have Shrews with a top half budget in League One this year so he's probably bringing in a decent amount, 2k a week or maybe a bit more.
