jpg75
Motherf*cker. Here's the roster: http://www.goal.com/en-qa/news/ronaldo-left-out-of-portugal-squad/bva5zdnwsh8j1cz1jogzdh4ux Portugal squad in full: Beto (Goztepe), Anthony Lopes (Lyon), Jose Sa (Porto); Nelson Semedo (Barcelona), Kevin Rodrigues (Real Sociedad), Pepe (Besiktas), Luis Neto (Fenerbahce), Ricardo Ferreira (Braga), Edgar Ie (Lille), Ricardo Pereira (Braga), Joao Cancelo (Inter); Danilo (Porto), Ruben Neves (Wolves), Joao Mario (Inter), Manuel Fernandes (Lokomotiv Moscow), Bruno Fernandes (Sporting CP), Bernardo Silva (Manchester City); Marcos Lopes (Monaco), Gelson Martins (Sporting CP), Bruma (RB Leipzig), Goncalo Guedes (Valencia), Andre Silva (AC Milan), Eder (Lille). So, Pepe and Luis Neto are the incumbents and Ferreira and Ie are the young dual nationals being looked at, possibly/probably for cynical reasons. Obinna
Remember even if he plays he is not cap tied. The next opportunity for them to do so will be the WC. After that, traditionally it would be Euro qualifying, but with the nations league or whatever kicking off, that will probably be when he gets cap tied. Of course he can make the WC squad, but for now he'd be considered a long shot. The nations league is going to dramatically change things. If you can cap tie players that way, a lot of countries, particularly in Africa, are going to lose a lot of European players they currently enjoy. The player pools of nations like France are going to explode, as if they never already had depth. Blackjack15 and johnyb

Also still not sure if the nations league will count the way qualifying does or not. Obinna

johnyb
What a depressing day. I got over Cristante pretty quickly because of his loose ties to Canada, but this kid is Canadian. Btw since some will blame the csa somehow, this is a reason not to arrange international friendies that don't feature Canada in Canada. I know what he means, he means we are losing out on a guy who was born and raised here, similar to Junior Hoilett. That being said, I agree with you that it's not super depressing. He cannot be cap-tied. The silver lining is that he can check out the Portugal set up, see how he likes it and see how they like him. This could be like the Akindele/USA situation, where he checks them out and decides Canada is a better fit. Not holding my breath that will happen, but you never know. johnyb, toontownman and Kadenge
toontownman
For sure, he isn't high up the pecking order but he is on their radar. Similar to the Cristante situation it likely means he is no closer to considering Canada and has probably set us back a good couple of years in possibly getting him to suit up. That is the frustrating thing. Can't blame Portugal for taking a look, Can't blame him for going. Its just another crappy situation we have to ride out and hope he becomes the next Tesho not Cristante. That said hopefully he wont be frozen out by Oz. Would he now have to file a one time switch if he played a friendly for Canada in the future? Assuming he plays in either game for Portugal. We don't have a competitive match until the next GC in 2 yrs. It sucks being a CMNT fan..death by a thousand cuts....

Scorpion26
It's not over yet with him, but we overall should chill out with posting here until news that he wants to join us. Obviously it is not likely, but heck he could have a horrible game and that's it with him playing for Portugal. I don't wish him to play bad against USA some may, but in truth CSA needs to call in someone to help evolve the youth program throughout Canada and create one umbrella that will benefit CMNT in the future which will take a long time. With CPL coming at some point this is a step in the right direction and I am hoping youth teams will be set up by club teams from the moment league plays. At that point call in a German or French person that has a very good understanding in how cultivate the youth to become top notch players for their countries... Someone to assist OZ to create Canada's style in footbal/soccer. Northvansteve
jpg75
Well, TFC and other Canadian MLS clubs have existed for a while now and we've seen a bunch of kids (Aleman, Aird, Bustos, Vaikla, Tabla) flirting with the idea or outright joining other nations. I highly doubt CPL will help at all. If a good is good enough and has options he'll be thinking about ditching us.
