Thread for Questioning CPL Attendance Numbers 2024

It would be nice if the CPL posted attendance numbers promptly so we'd have something to dispute.

It should be nothing challenging in this age of websites with near instant scoreline updates. The attendance stat gets added on many of those websites as soon as it is announced over the tannoy and/or made available in the pressbox at the game. Suspect some junior staff member at York United screwed up having not been made aware that the announced number should always be in four digits:

and the league abruptly stopped posting the numbers in real time after that to avoid another similar faux pas.

There doesn't appear to have been an issue with updating the Canadian Championship summary promptly on announced attendance when the CSA rather than CanPL is involved this time (suspect there may be a fine to be paid if they don't:

Ottawa vs Valour - 2492

https://canadasoccer.com/events/championship-match/?matchId=4786

Forge vs York - 2471

https://canadasoccer.com/events/championship-match/?matchId=4788

Pacific vs TSS - 2161

https://canadasoccer.com/events/championship-match/?matchId=4787

The same comments about the Forge attendance in relation to Saturday's game are applicable again only with the far side from the camera being even more sparse this time, but worth noting that with Pacific that there is around 5200 in capacity visible in terms seats and bleachers visible from the main camera so the announced attendance number implies that should be 35 to 40% full even allowing for a few hundred people being on the now departed hydro pole side. Judge for yourselves how credible that is from the highlights:

So your saying you think it was fraud? Outright lie on the numbers if the real one's are below 4 digits? And is the league in on the Fraud as well in your opinion?

As long as CRA get the appropriate percentage of the take on the tickets that were bought and paid for, the word fraud doesn't belong anywhere near a thread like this. I don't believe for a minute that any of the eight clubs would commit the criminal act of fraud in that regard or that the league would ever condone that sort of activity.

No attendance number so far on the official summary from Halifax:

Calgary game announced as 2876:

Don't think the Friday evening timeslot did them any favours on actual attendance. Are they maybe spreading games out more across weekends this season to cut costs where Onesoccer is concerned?

This is why you unfortunately can't be taken seriously. Every single assumption skews negative. Can you please explain how that even makes sense?

If anything, I would assume that spreading games out over more days would increase costs. Wouldn't paying somebody for an 8 hour shift to broadcast a double header be cheaper than paying them for 2 separate days?

Pacific FC announce 2161 which was also the number for the cup game (see above):

Not sure what's going on because that seems like too much of a coincidence to happen at random. Same arguments outlined for the TSS game are still applicable.

Latest quasi-official numbers. The league website still says 2161 for Pacific vs York rather than 2361:

https://canpl.ca/matchcentre/9u12syvm7s5ufskm1r3523c44/highlights

cpl-2024-attendance-report-week-4-from-o

and still has no number for the Ottawa game:

Wait, I thought the league was overreporting attendance?  Now you're saying they're underreporting?

Will only post Canadian Championship numbers when the home team is in CanPL.

Forge vs Montreal was a school trip assisted 14923 which looked on the generous side but don't doubt they distributed tickets huge numbers of tickets to the various schools:

https://canadasoccer.com/events/championship-match/?matchId=4795

Cavalry vs Whitecaps was announced as 4084:

https://canadasoccer.com/events/championship-match/?matchId=4791

Whitecaps were a significantly stronger draw in Calgary in this competition back in 2019 with an announced number then of 5129 when there was no doubt still more of a novelty factor to an MLS club being in town:

If my experience with school days is anything to go by, lots of students will have spent at least 60% of the game going from one concession stand to the next, and rarely sit in their seat.

Also, even if a school has 300 students buy tickets to the game, typical absenteeism is over 10%, so even on a field trip you'll expect some who bought tickets to not show up.

Yeah, the number in the stadium was probably 13ish k by my eye. Also, much shuffling about going on as you suggest. Plus, I suspect a fair number of season ticket holders paid but didn't attend.

I would be surprised if it wasn't.  The return leg is part of the ST package for PFC.

Edit:  My bad -- I'm wrong.  I thought it was, but I just checked my Centre Circle tickets and it's not.  Huh.

York announce 1049 for the Valour game:

https://canpl.ca/matchcentre/9v97i5bbw5kegp0q4he4jl9g4/highlights

Scanners fixed or message now understood and complied with as the case may be. Onesoccer camera angles obviously not the greatest to gauge this one.

Edit: there's actually not a bad crowd view in the highlights for this one from 1:59 to 2:00:

https://youtu.be/vbsAyk6BuXc?si=O_HfEvObf9IO9DSD

Not long after midway through the first half so shouldn't be a case of the crowd being so sparse because they are slow to arrive or return from concessions and washrooms.

No official numbers for the Halifax and Pacific games on the league website so far:

https://canpl.ca/matchcentre/9vntkflluxirl2yur4idug36c/highlights

https://canpl.ca/matchcentre/9w424nfopp2yf7uzk9xwl2gpg/highlights

Fell asleep during the second half of the Pacific game so may have missed a tannoy announcement at the end. It used to be difficult to see the white seat patterns against the purple ones in the two seated stands.during weekend Pacific games Alarmingly easy during this game given how sparse the crowd was.
