Late May/early June update:
Chile U-20 camp; Cristián Gutiérrez is called into camp for two games in Uruguay (both against Uruguay U-20).

He doesn't start the first game (not sure if he was a sub or stayed on the bench). Chile lost 0-3.

http://www.anfp.cl/noticia/26387/la-roja-sub-20-tropezo-ante-uruguay-en-el-primer-amistoso-en-motevideo

He DOES start in the second game. Ends a 2-2 draw. (Not sure if Cristián played all 90)

Late June update:
Chile U-20 camp; BOTH Cristián Gutiérrez & Diego Gutiérrez are called into camp
(for two games vs Paraguay U-20)
http://www.anfp.cl/noticia/26467/la-roja-sub-20-practico-por-ultima-vez-antes-de-viajar-a-paraguay

First game is a 1-1 draw and Cristián enters late in the 87th minute.
http://www.apf.org.py/la-albirroja-sub-20-igualo-1-1-en-su-primer-amistoso-frente-a-chile.html

Second game 0-3 loss for Chile but Cristián plays a full game.
http://www.apf.org.py/la-albirroja-sub-20-goleo-a-chile-en-2do-juego-de-preparacion.html

ZERO minutes for Diego despite the call-up it would seem. ←←← (so we have 6 months to get him on board for our U-20 ;) ) Cristián is clearly enough in their plans to be close to a lost cause for us.

Cristián Gutiérrez is getting all kinds of minutes with the Chile U-20 squad. Friendlies here and there against club teams(youth and senior).

Twin brother Diego Gutiérrez seems to have fallen off the radar of the U-20s after the June camp where he didn't play.
We should bring him into our setup ASAP, he wouldn't even need to file a one-time switch. It would take a miracle for him to be part of the Chile U-20s now.

Really good to hear for us, if he isn't participating in the Chile camp there's little reason for him to refuse a call-up from Canada for the camp in Costa Rica in a couple weeks. It doesn't guarantee he'll play for us in February, but if Gale and co. like him in September and he gets called up by both teams in the winter, I would imagine he'd prefer actually playing for Canada rather than presumably being a back-up for Chile given the fringe player treatment he's had there.

From there, as OM said, he would still have his one time switch to play for Chile if his club career takes off, so from the player's perspective it seems like it would be at worst a harmless career move.

Two more friendlies for the Chile U-20s against Uruguay late August/early September. Both 1-0 victories for Chile. Cristián Gutiérrez started the first game but was absent from the second (not even on the bench - not sure why???)

Diego Gutiérrez nowhere to be found. If there is international football in his future it seems likely it would have to be with Canada.

Ya know what? South American U-20 teams play lots of friendlies! Their FA's must have so much cash.

In early October, Chile U-20 hosted Paraguay U-20 for two games:
Cristián Gutiérrez played a full game in a 1-0 victory over Paraguay
http://www.anfp.cl/noticia/27122/primer-golpe-la-roja-sub-20-logro-un-trabajado-triunfo-ante-paraguay
Seems he was absent from the 2nd game (a 4-1 win for Chile)
http://www.apf.org.py/la-albirroja-sub-20-cerro-serie-de-amistosos-ante-chile-en-santiago.html

In mid-October, Chile hosted Ecuador, Brazil and Uruguay:
http://www.anfp.cl/noticia/27138/talca-recibira-cuadrangular-con-la-roja-sub-20-como-protagonista

Gutiérrez played a full game in a 2-2 draw vs Uruguay
http://www.anfp.cl/noticia/27158/chile-sub-20-cosecho-un-positivo-empate-frente-a-uruguay-en-talca

but did not play in a 3-0 victory vs Ecuador and 1-1 draw with Brazil:

Brother Diego Gutiérrez still missing in action.

Honestly I'm surprised we haven't seen Diego with Canada's U20 side. I think Gale knows of both brothers.

The Campeonato Sudamericano de Fútbol Sub-20 starts on January 18th. Chile are having a 34 player mini-camp right now. One assumes if the tournament is like previous editions, they will need to trim their squad down to 23 players.

http://www.anfp.cl/noticia/27634/nomina-de-la-seleccion-chilena-sub-20-para-ciclo-de-entrenamientos-del-19-al-22-de-diciembre

Cristián Gutiérrez is there. Diego Gutiérrez is not.
If the CSA isn't planning on calling Diego then I don't know what's going on. He's clearly not in the ANFP(Chile)'s plans.

EDIT:

Diego is in Israel/Palestine/West Bank right now. It would make sense that his club Palestino would do a tour there.

Word out of Chile is that Diego has been contacted by CSA and will be attending the last U20 Camp prior to the Concacaf qualifying tournament.

Great news! Any links? I couldn't find anything.

As for Cristián Gutiérrez, there was another mini camp for Chile at the end of December with only 31 players. He made the cut from the 34. http://www.anfp.cl/noticia/27655/nomina-de-la-seleccion-chilena-sub-20-para-ciclo-de-entrenamientos-del-26-al-30-de-diciembre

There will be a final camp in Ecuador to adjust to altitude with 25 players. He made the cut again from 31 to 25 players. http://www.anfp.cl/noticia/27675/nomina-de-la-seleccion-chilena-sub-20-para-el-proceso-de-aclimatacion-en-ecuador

They will cut from 25 players to the final 23 players for the Chile U-20 squad after the camp.

No links yet but a reliable source in Chile confirmed that he and his agent are on their way to Canada to meet CSA officials later this week.

He is part of Chile's 23-man squad at the CONMEBOL U-20s (and therefore, if I am correct in my understanding, would need to file a one-time switch if ever he were to play for Canada).

Tonight Chile's U-20 squad crashed out of CONMEBOL qualifying. I believe that, (excluding the possibility of Chile making the Olympics in 2020 & playing in that U-23 squad)*, Cristián's opportunities for youth football are now over. It's either waiting and working for that Senior Chile cap or the one-time switch to Canada.

Played a full game in a nil-nil draw against Brazil (picked up a yellow too):
http://estadisticas.conmebol.com/html/v3/index.html?channel=deportes.futbol.sudamericanosub20.385921&lang=es_LA

Played a full game in a 1-1 draw against Ecuador:
http://estadisticas.conmebol.com/html/v3/index.html?channel=deportes.futbol.sudamericanosub20.385926&lang=es_LA

Played a full game in a 1-2 loss to Paraguay:
http://estadisticas.conmebol.com/html/v3/index.html?channel=deportes.futbol.sudamericanosub20.385929&lang=es_LA

Played a full game in a 1-0 loss to Colombia:
http://estadisticas.conmebol.com/html/v3/index.html?channel=deportes.futbol.sudamericanosub20.385933&lang=es_LA

So basically he played at left back every game; four games in a row with only a one day break in between each game at ~2700m in altitude for each! That's a proper grind!

*CONMEBOL seems to use their U-20's as Olympic qualifying, except for the intercontinental playoff which is weird.

Born in Quebec City,

Since this thread has been bumped, might as well mention that Wikipedia is wrong and he was not born in Quebec City.  Born in Greenfield Park, QC, (suburb of Montreal). (Unless his mother is a superhero and managed to give birth to twins 300km apart). Chilean media were just putting "Quebec" without making it clear that that was the province and eventually that became Quebec City I think. http://canadasoccer.com/?t=profile&pid=4354

Christian has been sent on loan to Union Espanola by Colo Colo.  Good move for him as he was not in Pablo Guede's plans for this season.

That is a very good move if it means playing time. Great that it's a club in Santiago so he doesn't have to move.
