2013 Vancouver Whitecaps Roster Dance

Recommended Posts

Ok so last night the Whitecaps got a 3-1 Victory vs Chivas USA. Now they will have a 11day break before their next game. Lets hope some injuries are cured by then. Las night the defence was better than against NewEngland they Whitecaps got 13pts out of a possible 18 in their last 6games. Still the team lack consistency, of course it's hard to get some when u have guys that keep getting injured.

The defense was still occasionally problematic against Chivas, though only in the first half. And in a home game against a team as awful as Chivas, who is seriously probably sub-NASL quality by this point, you expect a bit more than that. But under the circumstances I can't complain, apart from the Rochat trade which I will never shut up about.

Cutting Rochat and trading any positive asset for the sake of Carlos Bocanegra would make me want to **** on Martin Rennie's face but luckily this just seems to be one for child-****ing rumour mill scumbags so far.

Very childish, but I like how the prohibited word you've typed could be both positive or negative (for you at least, as I would think both are negative from Rennie's point of view).

Whitecaps FC loan Caleb Clarke to FC Augsburg

'Caps striker to join German Bundesliga club on a year-long loan

VANCOUVER, BC - Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced today that striker Caleb Clarke will join German Bundesliga club FC Augsburg on a year-long loan.

“Caleb is a young player with a lot of upside," said Martin Rennie, Whitecaps FC head coach. “This is a great opportunity for Caleb to continue in his development and we look forward to seeing the progress he’ll make while with FC Augsburg.”

Clarke, 20, will train and play with FC Augsburg's U-23 side and will also have regular training sessions with the club's first team of the top flight German Bundesliga.

The native of Richmond, BC, joined the Whitecaps FC Residency program in September 2009 and went on to sign a Major League Soccer (MLS) contract as the club's sixth Homegrown player on April 24, 2012.

Last year, Clarke made his MLS debut at home on August 15, 2012, against FC Dallas, coming on as a late substitute for fellow striker Kenny Miller. Clarke also made a substitute appearance against Chivas USA on October 3.

In addition, the 6-foot-1, 165-pound striker made five appearances for the ‘Caps in the MLS Reserve League. With Whitecaps FC U-23, Clarke scored five goals in seven appearances in the United Soccer Leagues (USL) Premier Development League (PDL). Clarke also helped the club's U-18 Residency side make it to the 2012 United States Soccer Development Academy (USSDA) championship final, scoring 24 goals in 27 appearances over the course of the season.

Internationally, Clarke has had experience with the Canadian national team at the U-18 and U-20 level. In December of 2011, Clarke earned his first call-up to the Canadian national team program when he was one of five Whitecaps FC Residency players to be selected by former Whitecaps FC player and assistant coach Nick Dasovic to a 10-day training camp with Canada’s U-20 national team in Sunrise, Florida. In September of 2012, the striker netted both goals in a 2-0 friendly win for the U-20 team over Trinidad & Tobago's U-20 squad back in September of 2012. Most recently, Clarke scored twice against Nicaragua in the 2013 CONCACAF U-20 Championship on February 20 of this year.

This is the young Canadian’s third stint in Germany. Earlier this year he had a pair of trials: with FC Augsburg between May 13 to 17 and at Dutch club Feyernoord Rotterdam between May 20 to 24. In 2012, two months after signing an MLS contract with the ‘Caps, he went on a two-week trial with FC Rot-Weiss Erfurt of third-tier '3.Liga'. He has also enjoyed two training spells in Italy with Udinese Calcio in August of 2008 and from April to May 2009.

YBB has an interview with Rochat on their website in Swiss German. He doesn't say too much about the Caps or MLS other than that he found the travel in MLS very hard especially having a young family. It seems things did not work out that well in DCU though. It seems he came to the Caps partly because he wanted to live in Canada but thought he would give DC a try after the trade. However, he said there was not much communication with him when he arrived and the club's attitude was "Do this and don't ask any questions." They did not show any interest in signing him so with his contract expiring at the end of the season and the European pre-season starting he asked to be transferred so he would have a club next year. The interview is here:

Not a bad piece of business for DCU getting a $500 000 transfer fee for him from YBB. The following article has an explanation from Lenarduzzi as to why the Caps could not do the same thing, ie. there were other teams interested in Ousted and they had to clear the salary space fast: http://www.vancouversun.com/sports/soccer/Vancouver+Whitecap+Alain+Rochat+headed+back+Europe/8641899/story.html

Also an interesting article on Cannon and the goalkeeping situation at the Caps: http://www.vancouversun.com/sports/soccer/Vancouver+Whitecaps+Cannon+knows+keeper+here+Writing+wall/8631715/story.html

Perfect fit, I was thinking the caps or another Canadian MLS team should give him a shot. Frankly I think Canadian players who drop out of Europe should be given a try out with Canadian MLS teams, Hainault and Jakovic are perfect examples of why that should happen.

Hardly a perfect fit for Whitecaps, however, if you ask me. Pretty huge drop in quality from Lee, even an end-of-career Lee (or DeMerit/ O'Brien / Leveron, if you see Straith at CB).

Straith is more of a Hainault-type CB though, isn't he, in the sense that he is primarily a CB who can slide over to fullback if need be?

I like the idea of signing Canadians but quite honestly don't think Straith is high enough quality/ has enough potential for this side. He certainly couldn't fly up and down the wing like a RB needs to for the Caps and I don't think he's ever shown that he's capable of great crossing/service. He's a slower, big bodied CB, no? Hainault could have pushed for a starting spot in Vancouver (read: NOT an automatic starter by any means), but I'm not sure Straith would be any better than a Carlyle Mitchell and could at best be expected to see regular reserve minutes and spot emergency filler time during busy parts of the season. Why would he leave a B3 career (or the almighty chance at a much-revered Hammarby) for peanuts and more scrutiny as a rare (actual) Canadian with VWFC? Let's not wear early-edition TFC-coloured glasses in Vancouver. Please not.

Don't see the downside if the price is right. Straith is 22 and Demerit, Lee & AOB are all 'mid' 30's.

Exactly, plus AOB and DeMerit have proven they could go down with an injury. The latter might not be back still in the air. Lee also probably not back next year or if so in an even more limited capacity, hence probably no road trips outside Cascadia.

Straith is excellent domestic cover that could possibly be off budget and cover two positions. He may not give us a lot going for at RB, but still rather have him there than Klazura. Could Straith be counted as Homegrown? or does his time with the residency now not count?

On the RB topic Whitecaps have a trialist Damian Batt last played with Oxford United. He is the older brother of Ex-Millwall current Leyton Orient winger Shaun Batt.

Corey Hertzog, who is on loan from MLS's Vancouver Whitecaps, scored 16 minutes into his FC Edmonton debut to lead the Eddies a 1-0 victory over the San Antonio Scorpions at Clarke Stadium in front of 1,745 spectators on Sunday.

Good to see Corey make an immediate impact. Caps have an option to recall Hertzog before the roster freeze need be.

For me Hertzog is clearly MLS quality, only he has not been clearly effective as a striker for Caps. Maybe bad luck. But he is hard working, has the smarts, moves well. Maybe he should convert to attacking mid for Caps.

I hope only in case of many injuries, as was the case with Mitchell. It's kind of a slap in the face to loan a player, and then recall him for anything less, since FC Edmonton makes plans around having this player available.

Brett Levis is apparently on trial or training with the Caps. Was with the Victoria Highlanders in the PDL this season with 12 goals and 6 assists and University of Saskatchewan player. Good to to see a CIS player getting some notice and not always NCAA.

Made the front page of the Caps web site today

Nice photo.
