  • Maple Leaf Forever! - 2019 CanPL Preview

On October 4, 1992, the Winnipeg Fury tied the Vancouver 86ers 1-1 and won the Canadian Soccer League title on aggregate. The next match in a Canadian national soccer league comes 9,701 days later, tomorrow, April 27, 2019. Forge FC versus York 9 (10 AM Pacific, CBC television). We’ve waited long enough.

Nobody knows how this league is going to shake out, and unusually for Canadian soccer, nobody pretends they know. We’re all excited. We’re all smashing rosters with the hammer of criticism on the anvil of looking players up on Wikipedia. I am trying to track publicly-made predictions, because that should be good for a laugh; in fact I can’t remember the last time I had this many laughs just reading about and listening to Canadian soccer takes. There are well-respected veteran pundits who were not alive the last time a national Canadian soccer league played a game and they’re gushing with the best of them. Enthusiasm is more contagious than measles in a Montessori.

This is Maple Leaf Forever!‘s official 2019 Canadian Premier League preview. Like all the others it is insane in spots, biased everywhere, and probably wrong more than it’s right. But who cares? Our hopes are unblemished by the scars of experience. Here’s the one prediction you can take to the bank: there won’t be many better years to be a Canadian soccer fan, ever, than the year 2019.

    • Bigandy let me tell you, maybe you are an Eric Hobsbawm fan as it seems to me, " the end of nationalisms" theory  is hot up there of course since the global village concept was developed in Canada You see good old Eric, He views nationalism as a bourgeois ideological construct, whose "popular" dimension is limited to linguistic, ethnic and cultural solidarities.   I say football it happens as the way you live it is a part of the culture of your people and welfare, public policies and social amenities.  I mean you play football as how your society is built throughout. You play the beautiful game the way your people live and reacts.  How they get frustrated and what makes them happy.     The more your society is equally established the more chances you have to win the WC.  Check the last winners, with a lot of problems Greece, Spain, Brazil and Argentina got big, big trophies and Croatia was near a few times.     Culture, football , politics and social stratification they all form a sense of togetherness on behalf of football.
    • Mbappe signing was confirmed in the evening on Monday, signing for five years, he'll be presented in mid-July it seems, after the Euros. One reason could be that he is officially under contract at PSG until end of June. So now that it's out of the way, we can start looking at other movements at the club. Kepa will go back to Chelsea, Lunin might decide he needs to be a starter, so they could be looking at keepers.  Rodrygo might be sold if they feel he'll lose his role with Mbappe there. They need a midfielder to replace Kroos and maybe some coverage for Modric, creative high quality mids with leadership.  But the biggest outlay, if it comes to that, would be Davies. True, it does not correspond to a clear need, but it does have to do with building for the future with players who can give them things down the road as well.
    • Who puts their hand over the camera at 6:24? Kone? I think not being able to see the full head is throwing me off.
    • He was a result away IMO. Just needed a result at the WC or a trophy with Canada.
    • Nothing 15 goals in the SPL couldn't fix!
    • Theo Bair looked like he was likely to be a bust in Europe and MLS until 6 months ago. Now he's on the squad. It doesn't always take long to change your fortunes

    • Great post and just to add what @WestHamCanadianinOxford and @jhoops__ said, also need to consider Champions League in all this.  If David's level really is EPL 6-12, that eliminates him from Champions League, but does have him playing vs better competition on a weekly basis vs Ligue 1.  So it's a tough call.
