A time-wasting non-sequitur ^^^ , if there are 6 teams how can they have conferences in any meaningful ways??  Are they going to play the other 2 conference teams over and over ad nauseum??? No, it'll still be a coast to coast league and thats clear from matheson.  It is very funny how you apply one set of standards to CPL, and another more forgiving standard to the nascent womens league.  Its almost like you have an agenda to push.

He doesn't even care about women's soccer.

He only cares about it as as another way to attack CPL. That's it.

^^^I normally ignore this clown but so the thread doesn't get derailed any further, this was in the National Post article linked above:

https://nationalpost.com/pmn/sports-pmn/halifax-the-latest-city-to-sign-up-for-the-project-8-womens-pro-soccer-league

...Matheson’s plan is to field eight teams starting in 2025, although she says the league could go ahead with six — which is the minimum for a pro league under Canada Soccer bylaws.

“We’ve still got several active conversation going in a few other markets … Whether it’s six, seven or eight (franchises) for 2025 is still to be seen. We’ll keep pushing here for the next little while. And then when we know for sure what the number’s going to be for 2025, we’ll share that with everyone.”...

Beyond any other consideration the clue that was going to be the case should have been in the name Project 8.

^^^I normally ignore this clown but so the thread doesn't get derailed any further.......but if ifs and buts were candy and nuts we'd all have 8 franchises.  This is the part of the story 5-6 years ago you shit on the league, throw shade on potential markets, venues, owners and rail on endlessly about how it wont work and you need to focus on a bus league.  Somehow you've changed your tune into a positive supportive one and I doubt its because you are a great fan of womens soccer.

Exactly, and he likes to talk about goalposts being moved when he is the most guilty of doing so.

A time-wasting non-sequitur, but since you raised the topic everything I have seen so far suggests they are aiming to have two conferences rather than a single table format.

Well Einstein, since you didn't answer the question the first time, I'll ask again more plainly.

Why do you think a coast to coast women's league will work, but not a men's league?

Point me to where I said it will work. If/when you grasp that I haven't actually done that in this thread you might begin to grasp the reasons for the ironic reference to a well known quantum physicist or not as the case may be I really couldn't care less at this point. To try and get this thread back on track what I did suggest is that wait for it drum roll .... Project 8 would probably be better off focusing on markets where there is no MLS or CanPL club such as Edmonton, Quebec City, K/W, London and possibly a Laval rather than a Montreal club.

Those with some level of familiarity with Canada's geography might have been able to discern that if Halifax were dropped and Vancouver, Toronto and Calgary were retained you could piece together east and west conferences in the Quebec-Windsor corridor and Alberta-BC from the possibilities I am suggesting. Not sure what they would be best doing with a fourth team out west but maybe that's where Kelowna finally fits in or you could have a Fraser Valley team as well as a Vancouver one.

Think the ferry ride makes Greater Victoria less than ideal but Project 8 does open up interesting possibities for the City of Langford on how to still have a pro soccer tenant from 2025 onwards for a non-expanded Starlight Stadium...

A look at the A-League post World Cup by the Guardian shows what should be some of the expectations for a P8 league:

Good
-    Grew to 12 teams
-    Had largest single match attendance of 11.5k
-    611% increase in season tix; 133% increase in broadcast hours watched; 108% increase in crowds
-    17 yr old Daniela Galic emerged as next new special talent who will be transferred to a big club

Buuuuutttt…
-    Not all coaches are full-time
-    Players aren’t officially full-time
-    3 in 5 players work second jobs
-    2 teams needed to propped up by the league
-    Limited mainstream coverage
-    League produced broadcasts use only 1-2 cameras, only streamed and have no pre/half/post shows
-    Magazine style show was terminated due to cost cutting

Being a typical pinko socialist, I watch the ABC every morning before work (and even on weekends). They show scores and highlights of the A-League Women's whenever there were matches the night before. They also show the same for A-League Men's matches. At some point, you'd hope that CBC would do the same for CanPL and P8.

In a global survey of women's sports fandom in 7 countries with 14k adults, good omen for P8 as soccer was second most commonly watched women's sport in Canada. Hockey and curling only got mentioned by Canadians. Only Canada & USA (#4) didn't list soccer as the most watched women's sport.

77% of Canadian women said women's sport don't get enough coverage while it is 55% for men. But streaming and social media has eased up the coverage bottlenecks. Insta, Facebook & Youtube are top 3 channels used by Canadians to follow women athletes.

Both genders watch more men's sports. Men watch women's sport more than women: 17% of Canadian women watch women's sport at least weekly while it is 30% for men's sport. 21% of men watch women's sport weekly while it is 53% for men's sport.

Main reason why Canadians watch women's sport: 46% said to support women. Main reason why 29% Canadians are watching more women's sport YoY is their personal interest has increased. 39% of Canadians say time is main factor why they don't watch/watch less women's sport.

Tangentially related, but today it was confirmed that Toronto is getting an WNBA team.

Will start playing in 2026.

More competition for sponsorships, fans, etc.

I think there's room for both in Toronto but this certainly doesn't help the Project 8 team in those areas. Especially given the WNBA's much bigger profile.

$1.5m salary cap for the league is quite something.

With the CPL salary cap at $1.2 million, so much for pay equity ;)

It's ambitious. Apparently larger salary cap than NWSL last season. Maybe they bring some name players to the league.

Yeah, though the NWSL is up to $2.75m next year.

We'll see how it goes.

C$1.5m salary cap should be higher than the wage budget of the bottom half of clubs in European women D1 leagues (ex currency differential). The new USL W Super League doesn't have a salary cap but it has been surmised the budget will be less than US$1m. P8's cap is about 200k higher than PWHL's salary budget.

In the podcast referenced in the article, Matheson said P8 would be a top 5 league in terms of player salaries. She also said P8 will be in the top 2 or 3 leagues in attendance in year 1. I can see P8 being in the top 5. Being second would mean over 7.5k average attendance. Being third would mean over 3.5k.
