They did not have enough "blank pages" in their passports. This is not uncommon for countries which require a visa. A bit of a surprise it would be happening to a group that is very familiar with travelling to various places.

Some countries also require that your passport does not expire within the standard length of time their visitors visa is valid for, regardless of how long you are staying in the country.

eg. Costa Rica requires a passport valid for the next 6 months from the time of your arrival. A Standard CR visa lasts 6 months, doesn't matter if you're there for a week, the passport can't be expiring before the visa does...just in case anyone really gave a toss :D

Not that teams like to lose anytime, but I really bet SA do not relish getting beat by both the US and then Canada.

They might be a tad more motivated against us....

For anybody not living in Canada wanting to watch the national team matches, I reccomend that you get a friend or relative back home to get a Slingbox, which can be hooked up from a cable receiver to any computer with a broadband internet connection. Once that's done, anybody with the code and password can access programming from the Slingbox using a broadband connection anywhere in the world. Living in Australia, I've been doing it for several months now and it was great for me to watch the hockey playoffs and the Gold Cup that I didn't have access to over here on the other side of the world.

Hainault will not be making the trip out and is back in the czech Republick. He did indeed have one page of his passport with no stamp and the authority in Frankfurt stamped "it" and told him he could not go because he had no more empty ones ( as of that moment). He was told to try and get a rush passport so he could fly down for Saturday but because he has a UK work Visa as well as his Czech Visa within his Canadian Passport, there was no way it could have been done unless he gave up his UK work visa, which he obviously did not want to do. He's bummed out but as always, honored to have been invited.

Canada ready for South Africa friendly

Canada's men's national team has made their final preparations for tomorrow's international friendly match with the Republic of South Africa. The Canadian men's team have spent four days training together at the ABSA Stadium in Durban. The first-ever meeting between Canada and South Africa will take place tomorrow at 19.30 local time. The game will be telecast live on Rogers Sportsnet (12.30 ET / 9.30 PT).

The Canadian team arrived in Durban last Thursday. Coach Dale Mitchell and his squad had training dates on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and today. Canada's squad features 16 players, including team captain Kevin McKenna. Tomasz Radzinski (33 years) is the oldest player on the team while Will Johnson (20 years) is the youngest player on the team. Paul Stalteri (61 senior caps) has the most international experience while Marcel de Jong (no caps) has the least experience. Stalteri and Julian de Guzman are the only two players that have played in Canada's nine international matches this season. André Hainault, meanwhile, was unable to make the trip because of a minor injury.

The Canadian team also visited the SOS Children's Village in Pietermaritzburg. The team made the 40-km trek from Durban to Pietermaritzburg so that they could play a little pick-up soccer with the young children in the village. The Canadian team also donated balls, uniforms and toys.

Canada’s men’s senior team is currently ranked third amongst all CONCACAF countries in the September 2007 FIFA/Coca-Cola World Rankings. Next year, Canada will begin their qualifications road for the FIFA World Cup South Africa 2010. Incidentally, the draw for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa qualifying ties and groups takes place in Durban on 25 November, just five days after the Canada-South Africa friendly. Both coach Mitchell and manager Morgan Quarry will be on hand at the draw.

He also did actually picked up a small knock a day early, but in light of what happened in Frankfurt, he did'nt want the CSA to jump thru hoops to try and get him all the way down to Durban and not be at 100% for the game. It was actually an educated decision from both parties for him to stay back.

Canada preparing for South Africa

November 19, 2007

Thahir Asmal Special to PA SportsTicker

DURBAN, South Africa (Ticker) -- South Africa will hoping to bounce back from defeat against the United States at the weekend when they take on Canada in Durban on Tuesday.

Carlos Alberto Parreira's side have been in disarray ever since preparations began for their final two games of 2007 against the North American pair with the coach at war with local football officials over fixture scheduling.

The Brazilian only had one full training session with his complete squad before the game against the US due to club commitments. Now he faces a new battle with two of the country's top clubs, Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, who clash on Saturday and want some of their players to withdraw.

"What is more important, a club game or preparing for 2010?" fumed Parreira, who also brushed aside suggestions that South Africa's recent defeats were of serious concern. "If you don't go for these teams we are playing, you won't know if you are making progress. I'm not concerned with results at the moment; I'm concerned with making the team better.

"If I was concerned with results, I would have chosen easier teams to play," added Parreira as he explained defeats to Scotland, Italy and the US.

Meanwhile, preparations for Canada coach Dale Mitchell have so far gone smoothly with the head coach opting to bring a strong European squad for the game.

In what will be the Canadian's 10th match of the year, the Mitchell believes the game will serve as a good opportunity to assess his troops before the CONCACAF qualifying campaign for the 2010 World Cup.

"Preparations have been good, we've been well looked after. We're all really looking forward to it," he said. "I think it's a big game for us because the conditions for sure are similar to what we'll have to play in when we go to qualifying and many of our players based in Europe had to come along, so we'll see them get a game and access the conditions.

"It also helps for them to prepare and lets us know how they'll handle these conditions."

The game at the Absa Stadium is the home team's final international before the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana.

Along with the Pirates-Chiefs clash on Saturday, it is also part of the build-up to the FIFA 2010 World Cup qualifying draw in the east coast city on Friday.

Conditions: does that mean humid climate, heat, and rabid fans?

Plus unknown refereeing ...

They should do well, our prep since Thursday seems to be ample.

Prediction: Canada 2, South Africa 1
