red card
State of the league type article by Sam Stejskal of the Athletic says MLS is achieving what it wants. MLS highest priorities: Adding billionaires to its collection of owners, increasing the value of individual clubs and maintaining competitive balance. But for all of the promising long-term financial prospects and intriguing new money, MLS still has some problems with its product. It doesn’t need to be this way. MLS teams spend enough money on their rosters to be better than they are, but the very structure of the league makes it extremely difficult to get bang for the collective buck. The numbers about how MLS teams allocate their spend aren’t normal. According to Sportrac's information, 15 of the 20 clubs in the Premier League spent less than a third of their total payroll on their three highest-paid players. Sixteen of them spent less than half of their total outlay on their five highest earners. It’s debatable how much of an impact raising the quality of play would have on the overall level of interest in MLS, but it’s relatively accepted by the league and those in it that getting level with Mexico is something that should have a positive impact. FC Dallas owner Clark Hunt and Vancouver Whitecaps owner Greg Kerfoot run two of the least ambitious organizations in the entire league, but they also chair the powerful product strategy committee. Any and all changes to the way clubs are allowed to build their rosters run through them. They want to maintain the ability to compete without having to spend more. They’re probably not pushing for change. League executives don’t feel much of a need to shake things up on this front, either. Commissioner Don Garber, president and deputy commissioner Mark Abbott and executive vice president of competition and player relations Todd Durbin have all been at MLS for two-plus decades. Abbott and Durbin both began working for the league before it ever played a match. They designed this model. It’s their baby. For them, it’s been effective. For some clubs, 40% of their value is based on SUM. https://theathletic.com/3009792/2021/12/10/out-of-balance-as-2021-ends-mls-continues-to-show-that-improving-quality-of-play-isnt-top-priority/ Edited December 10, 2021 by red card Yohan, narduch and rkomar 2

MM3/MM2/MM
Only one player selected in the re-entry draft and he didn't play in MLS last season. No one selected in the waiver draft. Time for MLS to get rid of all these drafts.

Next season could be make or break. I hope it's the latter and Canada completely separates from MLS and with the league collapsing the CPL will have a chance to become Concacaf's No.2 league if it isn't already. This is the fucking stupidest post. You're theory is that the league is going to be "make or break" both before their next TV contract and 4 years ahead of the World Cup hosted in North America, while also wondering if CPL is already the #2 league in the region despite still losing to teams from Central America on a frequent basis. red card
CNBC says MLS is asking for US$300 million/yr in its new media deal. The package will contain every MLS match, including local, national, linear, and streaming rights. It will also include the new version of Leagues Cup and the MLS Next Pro. It will be an increase from US$90 million/yr. Though, it doesn't account for all the local rights monies lost. It will also be split amongst more teams. CNBC also says they'll likely get closer to US$200 million because the US men’s and women’s national rights will no longer be part of the package; the recent US$110B NFL rights deal has eaten up a significant amount of money for US networks to use for other sports rights. Twitter users also cite that ESPN pays US$300 million/yr for SEC rights which gets >5x the average MLS audience. ESPN just recently signed up to pay US$175 million for la Liga which gets way above ratings for about 10 matches but is mostly lower than MLS for the other matches - though, audience size isn't the metric to use anymore as ESPN is largely streaming la Liga matches to boost ESPN+ subs rather than to generate linear tv ad revenue or to justify linear tv sub pricing. MM3/MM2/MM
MLS Superdraft today at 3PM. TFC has already traded their first round pick (#3 overall) I think CF Montreal will also trade theirs unless there is a Canadian they have any eye on (Preston Popp?). Toronto FC and Vancouver will probably use their picks for the MLS Next Pro rosters. Edited January 11, 2022 by MM3/MM2/MM
Bison44
DOsSantos, Heibert might be second round "project" picks, TFC could use as much CB help as they can get. Gavran would be the same for someone needing a keeper. Mullings, Oluwaseyi (SP) seem like the best CDN forwards.
Watchmen
The MLS Superdraft has become so irrelevant to roster building I find myself forgetting about it nowadays. You can still get quality players out of it, but it just seems like it should be your last option.
BearcatSA
Daryl Dike's transfer to WBA probably doesn't happen if he ended up getting drafted by Vancouver in 2020, so the Caps should ask for a small cut for not taking him when they had the chance 😁 Gian-Luca

toontownman
Not so great for Canadians so far. Edit: One minute later - Tani Oluwaseyi to Minnesota Edited January 11, 2022 by toontownman
MM3/MM2/MM
Minnesota takes the first Canadian off the board: Tani Oluwaseyi From Northern Tribune: Tani Oluwaseyi – Forward for St. John’s University Nigerian-born forward Tani Oluwaseyi is a wide attacker with has procured an immense twenty goals and ten assists throughout three seasons with the St. John’s University Red Storm, cementing himself as both a potent and unselfish forward with a good eye the best goalscoring opportunity. Oluwaseyi was just ten when his family immigrated to Mississauga, with the forward establishing himself at GPS Academy and winning the golden boot at the 2017 Super Cup in Ireland, while also leading the team to Ontario Academy Soccer League and Provincial Indoor Soccer League championships. He credits a lot of his early development to former Hamilton Croatia coach Ron Davidson. With Oluwaseyi missing the 2021 fall season due to a knee injury, however, some MLS sides may be scared away from drafting an individual who otherwise would arrive as a high-ranking pick. If he’s open to offers from the CPL, any outreaching clubs might find themselves a gem.
