* In this thread post match updates on all Canadians playing in MLS.

* If you find updates posted in some other thread or on the other Voyageurs forum then post them here as well, but be sure to credit the original poster.

* If there is news that is particularly significant (eg. someone scores a big goal, someone gets injured, etc.) then feel free to begin a new thread on that topic in order to draw greater attention or start a discussion, but also post that news here.

* Some comments on news posted in this thread are okay, but let's not let this thread go off into a long discussion. If the news already appears in another thread (as per the previous bullet) then post your comments in that other thread, otherwise if you want to say something significant or if it is likely to generate replies then begin a new thread.

2011 - 20

2012 - 23

2013 - 23

Not much change from previous years but a higher number from this group looks likely to stick around. The addition of Ottawa causes the number of Canadian professionals in NA to rise, albeit slightly. We are heading in the right direction!

Russell Teibert goes the full 90 in the 4-1 victory for the Caps in their season opener against NYRBs. Played on the right and for the life of me I can't see why people want him playing anywhere else. He and Beitashour connected great and his two way work was very good. That and with Laba, NRC and Morales in the central mid I'm thinking he won't be getting much time there.

- No Canadians saw the pitch in the Impact loss in Dallas

- Kyle Porter came on in the 82nd minute in DC United's 3-0 loss to Columbus

- Rob Friend came on in the 77th minute in LA's 1-0 loss to Real Salt Lake

- Will Johnson played a full 90 in Portland's 1-1 tie with Philadelphia

^Rob Friend won a penalty for LA in stoppage time, but Robbie Keane was stopped by Rimando.

I would say that Friend really helped to 'win' that penalty if you know what I mean.

Yeah it is really worth checking out that video. Rob Friend obviously already took some acting or stuntmen lessons in Hollywood :D

Kofi Opare - DF - '90 is CMNT eligible, but played for the USA at U20 level. I don't see him breaking into the USMNT anytime soon though, or even the LA first 11, but he's a solid prospect. I might include him on this list as well.

Tesho Akindele was in the game day 18 for Dallas, but didn't see any minutes. Still that's a promising start for a rookie and hopefully he'll see some minutes and score a goal or two as the season progresses.

Here's what Pareja had to say about him after the draft:

"He immediately caught my eye," Pareja said. "He has a natural instinct to score. And he has the pace to keep up in MLS. I think he will work."

Pareja said that Akindele slipped off the MLS scouting radar only because of his pedigree.

"I knew him closest (of) the other coaches who scouted him," Pareja said. "I consider him a player who can come in and help us right away. He was probably underrated because he played in a lower division. But he's committed to the game, and that's important to us."

Right. Since he last played for a US team, I consider him American until proven otherwise. I'll add him to the list if he's called up for a Canadian camp or game.

Is Rob Friend a DP for LA, if not then what kind of money is he making in LA?

Rob Friend a designated player? Unless El Hombre is the manager, I can't see that happening. Plus LA already has 3 DP's in Donovan, Gonzalez and Keane and we all know that MLS clubs can only sign 3 DP's.

Dero, Henry and Osorio starting for TFC vs Seattle. Lots of speedy plays. Henry and Osorio set up Defoe's first goal and both look solid. Dero is a bit like Mattocks - he is running around a lot but not linking up that well.

-

How is he eligible?  It looks like he was born and grew up in the US.  Does he have Canadian parents or something?

Yeah, I think he has a parent from Canada. I'll leave him off since he hasn't represented Canada yet, and he's pretty American from all intents and purposes. I'll be sure to add him if anything changes.

-Also Ashtone Morgan was an injury time sub. Kyle Bekker didn't make it off the bench.

-Patrice Bernier started and played 72 minutes in Montreal's 1-0 loss to Houston.

March 16

-Will Johnson played 90 minutes in Portland's 1-1 draw with Chicago.

That makes sense. Same goes for not sending Hamilton, as TFC is short on strikers. Hopefully they both play a lot.

I read that NY Red Bulls want to own a USL Pro team, like the Galaxy. They had an interesting reason to do so (RB want the team up and running in 2015), namely so that they could OWN players.

Galaxy 2 is in fact a seperate entity, they are not part of MLS. So you can sign players there, which could come in handy. Now I think you can sign players to a PDL contract (thinking Ben Fisk here) but it would be an actual pro contract with an actual pro team. I think in theory, if a certain player develops well, Galaxy org could even SELL a player to MLS or any other league for that matter.

Toronto has a big enough market (and it's owners big enough pockets) to do the same. Although I still think the CSA doesn't want USL Pro to gain a foothold in Canada for some reason.
