Well as I said earlier. We will never succeed as a soccer nation playing that way. have to agree with that poster named "neophite" who said that there is a difference between playing solid defending like the Italians are known for and playing the way we played today..

Well, I criticized the defence after the Syria game for looking weak and indecisive. Today, they looked in charge and, I thought, played well. Especially Hainault. Ledgerwood did not look as good as he did last game and Ramalho was pretty much invisible.

MOTM was obviously Waganaar (good for him). Tough one for O'Neill and Rosenlund.

Ivan,, I have to agree,, there were very few positives to take out of this game from a possession or offensive standpoint,, but Wagenaar was the man of the match for us and looked very confident today (couldn't fault him on either goal)... And the backline looked much more solid.. Hainault was a shot blocking machine out there.. I can't think of anything else even worth mentioning,, this is truly a game to just forget about. I hope Mitchell doesn't employ the same "bunker down" strategy against Italy on Saturday and sits Peters out for 82 minutes again.. As we need goals and a victory to move on...

Well I have to say I was pretty dissapointed with the tactics selected by Mitchell. We waited to long to put on the right players and kept trying to kick it up field to a lone striker all game long. Once more when we had the ball, we gave the ball carrier no options and hence we kept turning it over. We should of came into this game to play to win, not to defend the whole game.

We don't need these kind of remarks. It shows you know nothing about soccer!!!

Well,it looked like we were playing in Azteca today.Yeah,we could have done better with our possesion.Maybe have tried to play more attack minded. It would have looked better but it wouldn't have got us a better result. These Colombians are gonna be hard to beat no matter who you are or how you play. They are such a polished team. They deserved at least a 2 goal win. With that said I still beleive we can get a result against Italy. We can't be shy about going forward and we can't be afraid to lose.A win and we go on and that is all that matters.

That was largely a waste of 90 minutes. Congrats to the boys for working so hard and nearly pulling off the intended 0-0 result (had the Ref not bought the obvious dive, we probably would have done it) but I hated the tactics we employed (like everyone else I suspect did - haven't read the in game thread yet). If we are going to lose 2-0, lets do so by playing soccer. With the tactics we chose there was never any hope we would score, and most irritating of all we have the talent to play offensively against these teams - and in this instance we took some of the talent off the field (or didn't put it on until late, to be more accurate). No offense to Riley O'Neil but he is clearly not a midfielder - it was like having Garret Kusch at left-mid for 90 minutes. I let out a great cheer when De Jong came on - only to find that he still didn't put him in on the left.

There's no reason in my mind to play this withdrawn. If you want to play counter-attack that's fair enough, but this wasn't even counter-attacking soccer.

I never want to see these tactics employed again, especially when we feel the need to take skilled players off the field to do it. And especially not in 2007. I had thought we left those days behind, but it appears this was one last gasp of the bunker defense at this level. At least I hope so.

Well, at least they showed some real hustle and grit in the last two matches, which sometimes wins out against teams with superior individual technical skills, such as Syria. I am still optimistic that we can get a result against Italy, but it is going to have to be a win, two points will not be enough to advance in this year's comp.

Come on guys! We were outclassed by a team that has an excellent shot at winning the whole thing. We are still a developing soccer nation, and I cannot see how using any other tactics would have resulted in a better scoreline. Our guys fought admirably despite being outskilled by a long shot. What were you truly expecting? We are making strides and today's result was not hideous. yes, our possession was poor, but let's be realistic. Perhaps we could have held the tie--we were damn close--but this was a formidable side. I fully expect the Colombians to be in the final four, if not the championship game.

Time to put this one away, learn from it, and start focussing on Italy. Keep smiling, guys. We're in tough, but we can still advance. [^]

Exactly. Sure we played ugly soccer, didn't even get a chance on Colombia, but we are a developing soccer nation and 2-0 is a respectable result, even if we did get outskilled, and outclassed. I fully expect Canada to learn from this result whereas I dont see the Italian's outplaying us like Colombia did.

Lets go Canada, we know you can do it.

The frustration I see is that a draw would only have given us the slightest improvement toward reaching our ultimate goal. We would still, in all likelihood, need to defeat Italy to advance.

Although I applaud the fitness of our players, I can't understand how such a drastic tactical change can do anything but hurt us on next time out. If Peters and DeJong can't give %100 on two full days of rest, we should have forfeited this match.

I don't see the harm in going down a few early by being aggressive. We might have had a game like Portugal, where we're allowed to get some touches and gain some momentum going into Saturday.

It's all well and good to claim that there was no other option but to bunker down (and this is ignoring the fact that we were horrendous on the rare occassion that we had the ball), but how long can we stay like this?

We were lucky. This game, as poor as it was as an endorsement for the Canadian game, was in Holland, with little press, and a small T.V viewing audience.

But what happens in 2007? Could you imagine what an embarrassment it would be if we play like that in our own country, in front of a huge audience and packed stands? Talk about wasting a great chance to promote the game! We'd cement the image of Canada as back-water soccer nation for years to come. And not in the eyes of the world - but worse, in the eyes of Canadians.

I see the harm. This isn't a friendly where we want to "brush up on our skills"...we wanted a result, it was quite obvious that we played to get the tie, or maybe a lucky fluke goal. We wanted to put ourselves in the BEST POSSIBLE position going into the Italy game. I see nothing wrong with that.

Tony i dont see why we have to get killed for you to be happy. Defencive bunkering is fine, if we were gonna go guns a blazing against the columbians we would of lost 10-1.. the best way to get a tie or a quick 1 goal was to bunker. It was the smart move and we did it well. 80+ min without a goal let in and the the flood gates opened on a dive.

I can't imagine we will play like that in 2007. Really this was a surprise for me, and not what I expected (and we normally get) from Dale Mitchell. I suppose I might feel better about this if Colombia wins the whole tourney, but not much better. I want to see us go for the win. A 4-2 loss is better than a 2-0 loss.

Playing not to win means you never win. And the Ref from Egypt was an ass, I'd wish for a Canadian ref to go over and screw their team by allowing obvious dives but they are already virtually eliminated anyway.

We were out there with the clear intention of defending all the way. Having said that what was Mitchell's intention on substituting our front runners with fresh legs? was he really expecting a miracle? On the other hand our defenders obviously got tired and begun to lose concentration. It would have made more sense to me to send in 3 fresh defender legs and be consistant with his strategy.

I myself think it was a smart tactic by DM. Look at Greece at the Euro's, arguably played the ugliest style, but it was effective. One chance was ALL it took, and often at times those chances were off of corner kicks and free kicks. I'm happy for the way we represented ourselves today. We got badly outclassed, but 2-0 is still a respectable result, to us Canadian fans, and the rest of the world.

Let's just hope Canada learns from this, and we beat the Italians.
