CPL new teams speculation

Recommended Posts

From what I remember there was interest in Quebec in the past in PDL/USL entry that was blocked by the CSA due to the moratorium and steered towards the new PLSQ. Forget the details. Quebec City, Laval and Gatineau are the most obvious possibilities on this assuming nobody would want to go directly head to head with the Impact. Sherbrooke is probably pushing it a bit in population size terms, but arguably no more than Moncton or Saskatoon would be.

Interesting timing for the first public comment by the CPL for a team in Quebec.  Haven't found an article yet but I saw on Twitter Don Garber was in Montreal meeting with the media and called out Impact fans for their inconsistent support of the team.  Might be concidence but it may not be...

Now putting my own conspiracy hat on lol

Hypothetically, Eugene Melnyk wants in, you would pass because of the Ottawa Fury who plays in USL?

You're asking CPL to surrender Ottawa to USL, right?

A pop-up at LeBreton Flats perhaps?

If what you say is true about OSEG having a "lock down" on TD Place, that makes the city of Ottawa very poor negotiators.

As we've discussed before, OSEG does have operating rights to TD Place and no other tenant can operate there without their approval.

Melnyk has not talked about soccer since his plea for help on a potential stadium was rejected 8 years ago. The Senators have already put forward their bid for the LeBreton redevelopment and it does not include anything related to soccer, a pop up stadium or even an area where a potential stadium could go. RendezVous' bid was selected as the preferred bid by the NCC and it's doubtful there will be a major change in the plan because of how strict the NCC is.

If there is to be a CPL team in Ottawa it will either be OFFC or some random, yet to be known group. Melnyk is nore concerned with LeBreton, the Senators and acquiring a casino license.

Edit: Double post.

To add: We know that OSEG have deep pockets, experience running a pro soccer team, an owner on the CSA BoD, a viable stadium & front office infrastructure along with a strong foothold in the Ottawa sports community. We also know they've publicly stated their encouragement for the league and have even been in discussions with those in charge of the CPL planning and logistics. So can we put to bed the talk of a second pro soccer team in Ottawa?

Paul Beirne has only recently been able to start talking publicly on this stuff given CSA membership had to be obtained before it was really appropriate for him to be doing so.

I know all that, just mean given that he has done press since the launch and the first we heard of this is the same day that Garber is in Montreal speaking to the media.  Could be coincidence, could be Rollins and Laramee being the first to ask, just found the timing interesting.

Assuming Paul is Paul Beirne this is noteworthy:

This must be Quebec City. That thing is turning into a bidding war.

The question I ask is:

Is it:
  • Multiple groups for multiple Quebec Market
  • Multiple groups bidding on the same market

Quebec City being the 2nd biggest city in the province and being far from Montreal and true, "Montreal haters" would be totally unaffected with MLS and Montreal Impact

Good job at hyping up MLS Mr.Garber! There's one thing about not understanding Canadians, but he clearly doesn't get Quebecers at all. If they fill no connections to their team, they'll show up when they win and desert them when they lose.

Starting more Quebecers would help the Impact like Hamel and Bernier while developing more seriously more Quebecers talents.

According to @Complete Homerin his recap of Beirne on Soccer Today "Sounds like each of those 10 initial expressions of interest are all in different locations. Seems obvious, but I'd thought there was a chance they involved competing bids"  so it may not be competing bids.

That might be jumping to conclusions a bit. Probably the same reason as always, they don't want to disrespect those involved by putting their private dealings on display when nothing is confirmed

Think must is a step too far given what we know so far, but agree it's the most likely location. The main issue would be where they would play? The university stadium where the Laval Rouge-et-Or play is marked fieldturf inside a running track and the university involved have not been keen on the notion of CFL expansion from what I've read in the past. I guess they could always do the Rayo Oklahoma panel approach to try to make it work, but a pop-up would obviously be the better way to go.

Actually, he's calling out the Montreal Impact Team themselves for not being connected enough to their community. He said that this lack of connection to the community explains their inconsistencies at filling the stadium and they must do more to connect...(No Shit)

Again, he's confirming what I keep telling people on this board over and over again, No one cares about the Montreal Impact outside of Montreal Island, dare I say, half of it don't care.

CPL needs to solve that and if they do, it could be big in Quebec.

  • Spotlight on French speaking local talent
  • Quebec City - Montreal rivalry

Theses will sell in Quebec

The mayor actually was publicly opposed to CFL coming to Quebec City, most likely in an attempt to protect the football culture and prestige of the Rouge et Or. However he publicly said he wants and wish for a professional soccer club in Quebec City.

Approving a pop-up or SSS would be a piece of cake in Quebec City

Could be one of the markets Beirne said would need to build a stadium.

Laval's stadium would be an excellent venue for the CPL. It just needs new turf, a relatively small investment compared to building a pop-up even.

There's a running track there... So I don't think it's a good venue for soccer, however, there's lots of land on the university grounds. I'm sure they'd welcome private funds upgrading their facility in returns of being co-owners/tenants

Really happy to hear PB talk about Quebec publicly, thanks a ton for the SPN summaries above.

I was debating the Ottawa issue privately with @Ansem this morning. I think we came to the agreement that, it's up to Ottawa fans and supporters in BBSC and SMR to continue to extol the virtues of joining CPL to the Fury and OSEG, since they are far more suitable to capitalize on the CPL momentum than a new investor or Melnyk new to soccer, with the added risk that the two teams may kill each other off.

I mentioned this to Duane as well, in that tweet thread earlier, that OSEG must be debating internally and crunching their projections to see if any increase in revenues/attendance/TV exposure from switching from USL to CPL will be enough to match the increase in operating costs due to the player salaries that CPL has pegged and presented to OSEG.

I don't think anybody can conclusively answer that question, with so many unknowns at play, though I'm sure the number crunchers at OSEG are aiming to. What I do think plays heavily into all this in Ottawa is that the Fury and OSEG have spent 3 years in NASL and playing against Edmonton and co, and their fantastic marketing efforts and yet the financial losses are well-documented by now. With that experience in mind, you can understand why OSEG would be hesitant at what kind of a boost CPL could give to the Fury financially; they have the battle scars that the potential CPL owners have yet to experience in soccer.

The fans can still do their part to help convince OSEG that CPL will be worth the added costs. Keep the pressure up, keep talking about it, keep letting more people know.

I truly believe and feel that those teams will join the CPL if not by the start of the league but in the near future. As at some point it will make financial sense for them.

Now what I think and maybe I'm getting a little over zealous....but let's say the CPL has a strong 5-7 years, the same conversation that you are stating can happen with the Canadian MLS teams.

Is it possible that we could see Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver sell their expansion spots at lets say 100M (for profit) to the expansion cities that don't get into the MLS and join the CPL at a financial gain?

Like i said, maybe I am being a little over zealous but for me the CPL's success won't only affect the current  Edmonton FC, and the Fury....but should turn the necks of the MLS clubs.

Damn I'm so excited, I just echo the feelings and hopes that all expansion cities are done correctly.

Meaning no stadiums with tracks!

I can tolerate a track in situations like the stadium above. From the image there it appears they put in temporary seating below the stands on top of part of the track so the seating comes relatively close to the field.

It's no custom-built SSS beauty, but it would be a fairly suitable stadium without having to build your own.(No idea how it fares for transport and location, just basing on general eyeballing)

It's an interesting thought. However, the only way I see a scenario like that occurring is if the CPL becomes successful and a broadcasting company goes to them and says "we'll offer you guys a $200 million annual TV contract if you get the three MLS clubs to join." essentially putting the salary cap to 15 or 20 million per team. However, I'm sure MLS will counter by artificially inflating its cap by that amount to prevent such a thing from happening. Again, it's ideal but I just see too many obstacles rising to stifle such a thing from happening.

Woah the cap wouldn't need to go that high though. I'm cool with 3-5M hard cap, with the 3 off budget players to attract fans.

All in all is there any rules in the MLS to sell a franchise and relocate the team? Yes Toronto is a major media market, but I don't see Montreal and Vancouver as being an issue to being replaced by the 8 current expansion.

No, I should clarify, I meant the cap would become that high if the CPL signed a big money broadcasting deal like that.
