Atmosphere at a football pitch brings more people.  It's funny to say it; but if it gets media attention that everyone is going then everyone goes.

I really hope that they can continue to get bigger crowds even; it helps set the table for other teams to be successful in Canada NASL.

The only problem with bigger crowds is that you get things like this little nugget from Chris Hofley at the Ottawa Sun:

Heard from a few of #FuryFC's most passionate supporters they had to deal with a some people telling them to tone it down during the match. Yikes. Soccer has a different kind of fan culture -- a noisier, more colourful and drum-banging loud one - that will take some time to catch on with people

Was VillaCanuck involved in that exchange?  Curious to hear how it all went down.

BTW Rangers is a great friendly for Ottawa to play.  Storied franchise on it's way back up.  They will soon be back to the Champions League.

As an aside, Scotland's UEFA Coefficient has been in a death spiral these last few years, falling to 24th (behind Sweden). While Celtic has done reasonably well in Europe, the likes of Motherwell and Aberdeen have not exactly covered themselves in glory. Scotland lost it's automatic Champions League birth a while ago. Currently Celtic have to play a series of qualifiers, though fortunately for them they get to take the "Champion's path" and are seeded. But it's looking like Scotland will lose that too (they only need to drop two more places, to 26th, and a bunch of outstanding Rangers runs are about to drop out of the coefficient). So in future the Scottish League Champion will have to go through the (confusingly named, considering) "Non-Champion's path". If Celtic had to do it this year, for example, the final step of qualifying would see them have to beat one of Athletic Bilbao, Arsenal, Bayer Leverkusen, Napoli, or Porto.

The Old Firm's day as European staples is done.

Not that I'm aware.  There was bound to be some issues with people trying to get cheap tickets and winding up in a supporters section.  The vast majority who wanted to move away did so quietly.  The section even attracted a small number of people from the more expensive seats and they joined in on the singing.

VillaCanuck is always involved, when it comes to the Fury :)

Check out @OFFC_Tourist on twitter for some hilarious stuff that came out from the Cosmos match, and the less rowdy fans.

The Ottawa vs Rangers game is listed as being on the Rogers Sports + 368/369 channel live from 7 to 9pm.

That station I can see in Toronto.  The station is a dumping ground for Rogers Community Channel sports usually on a delayed basis.

Anyone else find where they can watch this game on TV?

same time as the TFC vs Tottenham game so I'll be out but look forward to playing it back.

Hey!  my first post on this subforum.

Anyone know my best option for parking tonight? I bused from St. Laurent on Sunday and would prefer to spend less time on the bus if I can.

Anyone know which lot is available for free parking at Carleton?

shuttle service from carleton Lot 7, but service is limited

A question for the srious supporters: How is Drew Beckie doing overall?

Very well. I honestly think that he has been the best defender for the Fury so far, and he plays better at CB than at RB, he seems more comfortable defending than attacking. Great committed defending, and he's wearing the headgear from all the shots that he has blocked the past few months.

Friendly vs Rangers FC Review

July 23, 2014 – Ottawa Fury FC vs Rangers FC – 0-1 L – Review

Ottawa (4-3-3) – DeBellis 6; Soria 7, Trafford 6, Jarun 6, Fresenga 6; Ubiparipovic 6, Ryan © 6, Donatelli 6; Mayard 6, Dantas 7, Haworth 7

Rangers (4-4-2) – Bell (Simonsen 46); McGregor, Mohsni, McCulloch, Wallace; Gallagher (Smith 79), Black (Hutton 74), Law, Macleod; Boyd (Shiels 79), Miller

Fury FC subs – Peiser 7 (DeBellis 30), Davies 7  (Fresenga 50), Maykon 6 (Trafford 56), Paterson 7 (Donatelli 61), Bush 7 (Peiser 62), Agourram 6 (Ubiparipovic 66), Eustaquio 6 (Ryan 66), Caceros 6 (Mayard 80), Schroeter 6 (Haworth 89)

Fury FC goal – N/A; assist – N/A

Fury FC injuries: LW Oliver (ankle), RB Drew Beckie (ankle)

Fury FC absences: CB Ryan Richter (loan recall), GK Devala Gorrick (rest)

Fury FC quick notes: Our starting midfield, one of the best in the NASL, was outpaced and outmuscled by the younger RFC midfielders, and we were under severe pressure for all of 1st half, especially down our right flank. RFC played many one-twos on that flank, and Fresenga, Jarun, Ryan and Donatelli failed to combine together to effectively shut down their passing moves.

In the 2nd half, the introduction of Davies and Paterson, particularly, shifted the momentum to Ottawa, with good passing and movement down our right flank and we started to open up some chances. Soria looked very good at LCB and is a player that deserves more playing time, with his calm, assured play throughout the 1st half. The introduction of 17 year old F Jacob Schroeter was a great boon for the OFFC Academy and for elite footballer youths in Ottawa in general.

Awesome result attendance wise and in the match it seems like it was competitive.  Hopefully some of those Rangers fans start to come to Ottawa matches, there is so much potential with this club.

The Ottawa core support is doing a great job and your passion will be rewarded.  Keep growing your numbers and the rest of the stadium will fill up with you.

NASL 2014 Matchday 12 at Carolina Preview

July 26, 2014 – Carolina RailHawks vs Ottawa Fury FC – Preview

Injury/fitness: LW Oliver (doubtful), RB Drew Beckie (doubtful), GK Romuald Peiser (doubtful)

When: Saturday, July 26, 2014 @ 7:30pm EDT

Where: WakeMed Soccer Park, Cary, NC (Watch at NASLLive.com; Listen at TSN1200 AM)

Carolina has started the Fall Season with 3 straight losses, including their first home loss of the season vs. Indy Eleven last week, and will be desperately looking to rectify their situation on Saturday at home vs. Ottawa. They also closed out the Spring Season with a 6-1 hammering loss away at Edmonton, and have lost severe momentum from their 4th placed finish in Spring Season, in which they displayed a perfect 4-0-0 record at home, but stumbling to a 0-2-3 record when visiting away.

For Ottawa, the status of LW Oliver and RB Drew Beckie is doubtful at the moment, with both of them sitting out the 0-1 friendly loss vs. Rangers FC on Wednesday after they both picked up ankle injuries in the 0-1 home loss vs. New York last Sunday. GK Romuald Peiser has built up his match fitness and did feature vs. Rangers, so he may be in contention for a spot in the lineup or on the bench. CM Nicki Paterson may also be a welcome addition to a spot in the lineup or on the bench after he returned from his 3-month injury layoff in the Rangers friendly. CB Ryan Richter is back from his 1-game suspension, and he also received game action on Wednesday, though not with Ottawa, as he played 45 minutes in the TFC friendly vs. Tottenham.

Ottawa has not yet scored in the Fall Season nor in their friendly, and the team will be looking to kick-start their goal-scoring against a team that they famously beat (in the minds of Ottawa supporters anyways) 4-0 at home for Ottawa’s first NASL victory in club history, a match in which Oliver scored 2 headers and the midfield trio of Ubiparipovic, Ryan and Donatelli particularly shone.

He was on for only about 5 minutes, but he showed a nice cutback move during that time, and almost got on the end of a nice through pass from Dantas. Did give up the ball a couple times but ran hard and looked right in place~ Great progress from him and great progress for the Fury Academy and Ottawa soccer in general eh?

NASL 2014 Matchday 12 at Carolina Review

July 26, 2014 – Carolina RailHawks vs Ottawa Fury FC – 3-0 L – Review

Ottawa (4-1-2-1-2) – Gorrick 6; Soria 5, Trafford 6, Richter 4, Davies 4; Ryan © 6; Maykon 6, Donatelli 5; Ubiparipovic 5; Dantas 6, Heinemann 5

Carolina (4-2-3-1) – Goodwin; Low, Tobin, Scott, Graye; Davidson, Albadawi; Elizondo, Enzo, Shipalane; Schilawski

Ottawa Subs – Haworth 7 (Maykon), Paterson 6 (Ubiparipovic), Mayard 5 (Donatelli)

Ottawa Goal – N/A; Assist – N/A

Ottawa Injuries and Suspensions: LW Oliver (out), GK Peiser (out)

This was the toughest loss in the Fury FC’s short history. Haworth looked great in the 2nd half, Ryan and Maykon played great passes in the 1st half, but could have done more defensively, and Dantas showed nice moments but needs to build up chemistry with Heinemann if the two are to succeed together. Some quick notes below on a game with many speaking points.

Diamond midfield formation: This formation looks great on paper but does not work well on the field, especially in a defensive point of view, and has mostly gone out of use in Europe these days. Often, the DM is isolated in covering the area in front of the defense, while the two CM’s are not in a great position to help cover the flanks, nor help the DM. With two ST’s and a CAM on the field, that just adds on even more defensive responsibilities to the three other mids and the defenders, as, at least in a 4-3-3, there are the two wingers to help cover the flanks.

Maykon was great with his passing and dribbling, but was not helpful in defense at all in his LCM position in the diamond, whether helping Soria cover the left flank or helping Ryan cover the area in front of the defense. A great example of this was seen in the 29th minute, as the Carolina RB found himself in acres of open space for a cross, as Soria was busy marking their RM Shipalane (who had an incredible game) near the penalty area, and Maykon was nowhere to be found helping  in defense, in complete no-man’s land.

Donatelli was similarly lacking in his advanced RCM position, unable or unwilling to help Ryan or Davies properly in defense. This was seen in the 32nd minute, for example, with Donatelli and Maykon in no position to help on D properly, and Richter having come out too far forward to try to cover the players, and being easily beaten on the through ball.

Simply, if Ryan was beaten for any reason in midfield, then there was nobody else to help cover the Carolina mids, and they had all the time in the world to pick out the through balls past Richter and the other defenders. The 5 minutes between the 34th minute and the 39th minute has numerous examples of this situation, and Ottawa was lucky to only concede 1 goal during this period.

First goal: The more offensive-minded players, such as Maykon and Davies, were caught up too far ahead in their respective positions when Ottawa lost possession on a Heinemann header in midfield. Ryan is tripped up while he’s tracking back (but which was never going to be called a foul), Trafford was slow in going to the left flank to challenge the cross, and Richter was caught out on the deflection, with Davies too late to help deal with the cross.

Second goal: This goal was simply a culmination of all the defensive breakdowns in the first half by the Fury. Since there was no LW, Maykon comes out to challenge the Carolina RB.  Ryan is now isolated in mid, and the RB passes to the space between Ryan and Richter. The Carolina mid receives it, with Ryan not challenging at all, and plays a brilliant through ball past Richter, who came out half-heartedly to challenge, and the ST puts in a gorgeous chip to make it 2-0.

Third goal: No particular breakdown, per se, just a good play by Carolina on their incredible right flank, and a rare mistake by Gorrick, who has shown that his one Achilles’ heel this season may be crosses in the air. Gorrick made incredible saves throughout the game, no doubt, but the mis-handling of this cross, and being too early off the line on the second goal, hurt Ottawa this match.

Hey all!

I would love to share some opinions on the Fury... maybe some that people don't seem to see....

1. Ritchie Ryan.  Is a good soccer player. no doubt. He maintains possession well, good leader... But I think HIGHLY overrated for his influence on matches.  He is tremendously slow (in a very athletic league) which hampers him throughout every single game.  He passes negatively more often then not, backwards, or sideways.. not looking to split enough.  He isn't athletic enough to bit forward a bit (I am not saying box to box, or attack) but to even support the attack.  I mean he is like this big hero among the media, and the fans it seems. He is man of the Match every week for no other reason then this weird reputation he seems to have created.  I would love to see Donatelli, Patterson and Sinisa play in midfield.  All are mobile, dynamic and can cover a lot more ground.

2. Passing game.  The passing game being preached throughout youth etc - I see more long ball into their strikers or into space then anything else.  The team seems to lack the ability/system to work the ball up the field. Possession is one thing, but useless if you can't penetrate.  Its strange.  I just feel like there is very little attack/penetration with the possession (possession meaning the back 4 passing to each other).

3. Team speed.  We for sure, no doubt have the slowest team in the NASL.  overall we have little to no threat.  If we don't have speed to cover ground, have outlets to be able to stretch teams.  You have zero chance in the NASL/USL/PDL.. anywhere in the very athletic North American game.

4. The team has had a ton of time now - the excuses of Carleton's poor turf.. or unlucky this, or late goals this.  They have to stop now.  Is this team good enough? I don't think so.  I think the staff have to look at themselves big time about their recruiting.  They have some good individual players, but I don't think the right 24 players were recruited to be the best team.

My two cents anyway, looking forward to replies!

Ya not much speed. I believe they really lack a game changer.

Are any Canadians standing out for this team? I check up on this thread every now and then, and it seems Beckie and Davies are getting a lot of playing time this season. Fresenga is looking like a dud, what's happening there? Looks like Trafford, Mayard and Haworth are all getting a chance though.

Any of these guys (or someone i've missed?) likely to move on the greener pastures, a la Kyle Porter?

I go to all their games, but in the supporters section. So, I actually miss a lot of what happens on the pitch, but I make a point of re-watching all the games afterwords, to get a good sense of how it went. I've done this up till the end of the Spring Season.

Your impressions of players are very accurate in my opinion. I make a point of following the Canadians on the Fury, so I can offer my thoughts on where they currently stand, as someone who closely follows the club.

GK - Chad Bush / Marcel de Bellis - Both are young goal-keepers, but are gaining invaluable experience training with Devalla Gorrick, who has had a solid year so far. Both train regularly and are certainly given chances to develop. I believe Marcel de Bellis started the friendly against Glasgow Rangers. If you're looking for players 'likely to move on the greener pastures', I would say one of these two is the surest bet (particularly Bush, because he's only 20). Goal-keepers tend to take longer to hit their prime, so we may have to wait a while for 'greener pastures' to come.

Defenders - In the Spring Season, Mason Trafford basically had a CB spot locked with Jarun. Drew Beckie was often played as a Right Back. He was doing well in my opinion. Andres Fresenga seemed to be a depth option, appearing whenever others couldn't play. Beckie has looked more solid imo. Caceros has been very quiet.

Mids - Ottawa's midfield is very talented, and Phillippe Davies has managed to fit very well. He's often played at a RW in a 4-3-3, but has recently played RB. He's had a good year, sparking lots of offense in the role he's given. I think he's scored one or two goals as well.

Forwards - Pierre-Rudolphe Mayard has largely been used as a depth player. I can't recall him ever being on for a full 90 minutes. He's always either brought on or removed as a substitute. Carl Haworth has been given plenty of opportunity to impress. He's been really good as a striker, but his only concern is a lack of goals so far. He has created plenty of opportunities for himself and other players, but can't bury his chances.

Overall, its nice having these guys playing in Canada. Any of us Voyageurs in Ottawa doubly appreciate that fact, given we've always been following them elsewhere.

Personally, I'd have two 'candidate' players who I think have a shot at moving to greener pastures: Drew Beckie and Chad Bush.
