2014 Ottawa Fury FC Season

Although the Fury have not done as well in the Fall season so far...the combined standings do not put them out of a fourth place ...play off spot.

A run of solid games could bring them close, I agree on the speed issue, but the critical point is the forwards with chances are not converting and putting the ball in the net...there is a lack of confidence up front that has to turn around.

They meet Minnesota on a big game day with a full house for the weekend event... hopefully they can be focussed and get a result, if not you would hope some possible signings are in the pipe to try and fix things this fall...

I'm sure it would have been mentioned already but Fraser Aird was in the stands with his family and friends for the Rangers game, did anyone get a chance to chat with him?

Someone posted somewhere on this forum that they managed to talk with him for a bit. The gist was that he is positive towards playing for the U20 Canadian team, but non-committal towards the full national team. Nothing exclusive, really, and I would expect a 'scripted' response from Fraser with respect to that topic.

I was personally thinking about trying to chat with him about exactly this topic. But, in the end, I don't think it would have achieved much beyond meeting him. There was so much else going on that night, that this took a back seat.

I've also been finding that talking to players about their futures is awkward. They do that with the media. With fans, their moods tend to be light and friendly. Trying to spring answers turns them off. And, I can actually understand and respect that.

Hey all!

I would love to share some opinions on the Fury... maybe some that people don't seem to see....

1. Ritchie Ryan.  Is a good soccer player. no doubt. He maintains possession well, good leader... But I think HIGHLY overrated for his influence on matches.  He is tremendously slow (in a very athletic league) which hampers him throughout every single game.  He passes negatively more often then not, backwards, or sideways.. not looking to split enough.  He isn't athletic enough to bit forward a bit (I am not saying box to box, or attack) but to even support the attack.  I mean he is like this big hero among the media, and the fans it seems. He is man of the Match every week for no other reason then this weird reputation he seems to have created.  I would love to see Donatelli, Patterson and Sinisa play in midfield.  All are mobile, dynamic and can cover a lot more ground.

2. Passing game.  The passing game being preached throughout youth etc - I see more long ball into their strikers or into space then anything else.  The team seems to lack the ability/system to work the ball up the field. Possession is one thing, but useless if you can't penetrate.  Its strange.  I just feel like there is very little attack/penetration with the possession (possession meaning the back 4 passing to each other).

3. Team speed.  We for sure, no doubt have the slowest team in the NASL.  overall we have little to no threat.  If we don't have speed to cover ground, have outlets to be able to stretch teams.  You have zero chance in the NASL/USL/PDL.. anywhere in the very athletic North American game.

4. The team has had a ton of time now - the excuses of Carleton's poor turf.. or unlucky this, or late goals this.  They have to stop now.  Is this team good enough? I don't think so.  I think the staff have to look at themselves big time about their recruiting.  They have some good individual players, but I don't think the right 24 players were recruited to be the best team.

My two cents anyway, looking forward to replies!

Really good and insightful points! I think all the points are more true for the fall season than for the spring season. In the fall season, we have definitely seen points 1, 2 and 3 all to varying degrees, but in the spring season, Ryan was on great form, and our passing game with Sinisa and Donatelli was on, as we had more defensive problems than offensive, and speed wasn't an issue because of our 4-3-3 formation really asking only the wingers and the fullbacks to really be speedy.

For the fall season, I know we have the big scoring drought and winless streak and all, but I don't think it's time to hit the panic button. Away at Edmonton, we got an early red and had to adjust. Home at NY, that's on paper supposed to be the best team in NASL, though they are playing more like the 3rd best or so. Home at Rangers, testing players out, and I believe Rangers at the Scottish tier 2 is a superior team to Ottawa, and perhaps other NASL sides as well. Away at Carolina, we tried a new formation that backfired in the end.

So for all the various reasons, I can see why Ottawa has struggled so far, but I don't think we should hit the panic button. We are going to have a tough game away at the best side in NASL this weekend, and we should still not panic or become ecstatic, whatever the result may be. It's the home match vs. Fort Lauderdale the week after that should be a really good barometer of where we are at, in a match that we should expect ourselves to get a result.

To get more specific, for point 1, during the spring season especially, I loved Ryan's short and mid-range passing game and his calmness on the ball. Since he's the anchor, I would expect him to get the ball to the 2 CMs or the wingers or even our ST, but I wouldn't expect the anchor to try too many through balls. However, he can hit those long through balls or diagonal balls as well, I have definitely seen them during the spring games. I think the team asks a lot from him defensively, since neither Donatelli or Ubiparipovic are as good as Ryan defensively. However, I thought Ryan should have been more involved defensively in the game vs. Carolina. What do you think?

For point 2, I think the manager is trying to incorporate Heinemann more into the play since his return from injury. But also, with the red card, or against a superior side such as the Cosmos and Rangers, or with a new formation, the team was always going to go to the hoofing mode when their usual passing game wasn't working out. However, in the big wins that we have had, such as the spring games vs. Carolina and Indy, it was definitely our midfield passing that won the game, from all 3 mids, and they should stick to what's worked the best and can work against teams that are at equal level to us. I think our passing game has to end with a good ball out to the wingers in a dangerous position near the box for them to cross it into Heinemann/Dantas, instead of giving it to the strikers early and expecting them to create their own chances, agree with you.

For point 3, I think that Haworth has to be given more starts or chances at the wing, he's been the most dynamic winger for us so far. I'd like to see Oliver make more passes and more off-the-ball runs, and I'd like to see Mayard perhaps cut in from the right flank, instead of running up and down the left flank. Davies was also great for us at RW in the spring season in his methodical and technical way, and it would be great to see him there, instead of RB.

Damn, it's always fun talking about the Fury, let me know what you think! I think I've seen you on twitter btw!

NASL 2014 Matchday 13 at Minnesota Review

August 2, 2014 – Minnesota United FC vs Ottawa Fury FC – 2-1 L – Review

Ottawa (4-3-3) – Peiser 8; Soria 5, Trafford 7, Beckie 6, Richter 6; Ubiparipovic 7, Eustaquio 7, Paterson 6; Haworth 7, Heinemann 5, Davies 7

Minnesota (4-2-3-1) – Hildebrandt; Pitchkolan, Calvano,  Dias,  Venegas; Vicentini, Franks (Jordan 76′), Daley (Watson 71′),  Mendes (Kallman 87′), Ibarra; Ramirez

Ottawa Subs – Oliver 6 (Davies 64′), Dantas 7 (Heinemann 69′), Mayard (Eustaquio 87′)

Ottawa Goal – Ubiparipovic (50′); Assist – Haworth (50′)

Ottawa Injuries and Suspensions: Donatelli, Jarun

Ottawa played quite well in their favoured 4-3-3 formation, with Haworth looking lively on the left wing, and Eustaquio stepping in admirably for Ryan, who went off injured during warmups.

The defense was much more solid than last week, with Richter playing well at RB, and Peiser having a monstrous 2nd half. The Minnesota penalty was quite debatable, in terms of whether it occurred inside or outside the penalty area.

Interesting quote from Marc Dos Santos:

Mauro Eustaquio's competitve debut with Fury FC wasn't planned.

The 20-year-old Portuguese-Canadian midfielder wound up in the starting 11 after captain Richie Ryan went down with an injury in warmups. Eustaquio had a solid game, something that came as no surprise to his coach who sees an eventual spot for him on the Canadian men's national team.

"(He's) a Canadian with extremely big potential," Dos Santos said. "His last four years (in Portugal) he built a training mentality and a mentality dealing with pressure that a lot of Canadian kids that play in local clubs here ... don't understand."

I knew it had to be the case when I saw the highlight video in the Fury press release.  You would think CBC would do a bit of research before reporting that he's going for a trial with Real Madrid.

Oh, excuse me. He still got invited to the $2000 a pop “Invitational”, which means if the cheque doesn’t bounce you’re in. Don’t forget the extra $3000 airfare it’s going to cost.

But let’s say it was based on *haha* skills. Whose staff selected these kids? Real Madrid? The tour company? I bet it was the tour company. I don’t think Real Madrid Academy coaches sifted through the tapes sent in and said “que uno!” for any of the 36 kids “invited”.

Well done Fury. Way to promote a kid taking a vacation before going back to school as some sort of achievement.

It is still pretty good to be selected for tryout. As for scouting the Super Y league you never know, an 11 year old from De Anza Force left to join Real's youth team last year.

He wasn't scouted in the Super Y league for this camp, he was scouted while at a tournament in New Jersey by the head coach of one of the opposing teams who also had a connection to Real Madrid, I think. Read it in one of the articles, probably in Ottawa Sun. Yeah, I don't think it's a trial, and I dunno, guess there's lots of money involved, but still, good for him. Perhaps he'll make himself something in NASL or MLS or even higher, who knows.

But hey, you know what? Even if the family or the Fury or whoever paid for that camp, whatever it cost them, it's still a way better opportunity to impress the Real youth coaches than any chance any of us here is gonna get, lolll. Hope the kid does well.
