Toronto FC MLS Next Pro 2023

With the creation of CPL and League 1's, Canada finally has a player filtering system.

Looking at the TFC2 roster release, 10 players are retained to try to impress for a first team contract, some will move to L1O or U-Sport (maybe both) and maybe re-surface in a few years, CPL may pick up a few players, a few may give lower level European leagues a try.

Some academy players who played a few minutes or made the bench will get TFC2 contracts and some will disappear.

Looking at players like Ongaro and Borges who tried the European experience and then returned home, in the past they would have probably disappeared from the Canadian soccer scene.

This in the end is one of the greatest benefits of having the CPL.

Result of the exhibition game Sunday March 19th, 2023 between Toronto FC II (MLS NEXT Pro) and York United FC (CPL) held at the TFC Training Centre (inside the bubble) in Downsview at 7:45pm.

38 min...York Kevin Dos Santos GOAL...York Osaze De Rosario from 15 yards on right hits the left post with his shot and a YU player has his shot stopped.  Dos Santos shoots 10 yard rebound past defender and fallen goalie Luca Gavran to right side of net.

59 min...York Osaze De Rosario GOAL...York Paris Gee pass from 20 yard line from left has De Rosario one-touch low 8 yarder into right side of net past diving goalie.

Final Score:...Toronto FC II........0........York United FC......2.......

Both teams wore un-numbered training shirts although I could see a small number on most of the York players under their right shoulder.

Figured their starting line-up was

...........................1 Niko Giantsopoulos

2 Paris Gee...3 Tass Mourdoukoutas...32 Brem Soumaoro...43 Lassana Faye

late edit:  16 Max Ferrari...28 Jeremy Gabnon-Lapare...8 Elijah Adekugbe

10 Oussama Alou...24  Osaze De Rosario...11 Kevin Dos Santos

Right after the second goal both teams made multiple substitutions.  Matthew Baldisimo and Markiyan Voytsekhovskyy were the York ones I figured out.  64 minutes brought on Chris Campoli for injured Kevin Dos Santos.  Yes Campoli has been U-Sports drafted twice by York and the year in between by Halifax.  He still has one more year of university left!  I didn't notice if Mo Babouli was here.  Brian Wright was running on his own with the trainer's instructions during the pre-game warmup but was not in the game.

I was surprised by the result as TFC II will start their regular season next weekend while York has one more month of pre-season.  TFC II used two MLS signed players that I recognized--forward Jordan Perruzza and defender Kobe Franklin.

CPL roster contrast.  Halftime had TFC II warming up 13 subs and York had 7.

I'll post more details maybe by tomorrow but unnumbered uniforms rule out a play by play.

All four played wit TFC2 last season on Academy contracts.   That is 17 on the roster which should be close to complete, with the #s being filled out with TFC players playing down and Academy players playing up.

Any idea of the main club signed any Next Pro guys for tomorrow's match?

I figured they needed to

Answering my own question

Both were with the first team during the pre-season and played in some of the games at Coachella. There will be comfortable if either of them get a run out Saturday night.

0-0 at the half, TFC II will play the final 45 a man up after a first half Fire red card.

Yep. But before that they couldn’t get the ball out of their half. Stefanovic looks good at the back, Pearlman ok but the rest mediocre at best.

Hmmmm,  TFC2 are getting whomped every game but the level of play isnt high enough??  I'm not sure if that computes for me...Is their someone is particular that is sticking out as too good for NextPro, cause I havnt noticed it yet.

That's more an indictment on TFC's prospects in my opinion.

I stand by that statement. Next Pro will be slightly worse than last season as a bunch of veterans have left the league once they realized it's a bit of a joke
