Road to Qatar ex Concacaf

Recommended Posts

Only Brasil & Espana remain as only countries who have not lost a World Cup home qualifier.

Italy join Greece, Denmark and Czechoslovakia as the only nations to win the European Championship and then fail to qualify for the following World Cup.

Austria, Turkey & Czechia are also out. Down to 54 nations.

Ghana in on away goals. Bad Nigerian keeper mistake and like many other CAF nations, Nigeria didn't look good going forward.

Eliminated nations in past few days now include Nigeria, Panama, Tahiti, Papua New Guinea, Lebanon & Iraq.

UAE will play Australia in AFC playoffs for intercontinental playoff spot.

Egypt eliminated in penalty kicks. Aside from Salah, Egypt is a dire team to watch. So good to see the CAF champions in the World Cup. But they need to loosen up a bit. Can't be playing 3 defensive mids against non tier 1 opponents. But the laser game of their supporters is wild.

First real match in Senegal's new Turkish built 50k stadium. Something missing in Canada's football infrastructure.

Tunisia also makes back-to-back World Cups for the first time since 2002/06. It's a country you'll probably want in your group as they have never advanced to the knockout stage. And this year's version is made of non-descript players playing a non-descript style.

Mali coud have been a fancied debutant but pushed the self-destruct button in the first half of the first match with the same player producing an OG and a red card.

Vahid Halilhodzic becomes the first manager to qualify for the World Cup with 4 different countries. He did it with Cote d'Ivoire, Algeria and Japan, and now Morocco. However, he only managed once at the World Cup as he got fired before the WC with Cote d'Ivoire and Japan, both times due to falling out with the team/Federation.

He is considered a stubborn man and enforces a strict disciplinary code. With Morocco, Noussair Mazraoui of Ajax & Chelsea's Hakim Ziyech have had a falling out with him. Will they kiss and make up before Qatar or will Halilhodzic be fired again before a World Cup?

Bora Milutinovic coached 5 different nations at the World Cup, but two of them (Mexico 86, USA 94) were hosts that did not have to qualify.

Not sure how this will appear, maybe you can zoom in.

This is all the World Cups since 1998; all the 32 team World Cups.

Based on the current spots, which I think have been pretty consistent since 1998, I'm really impressed by the turnover.  There are 224 places in these seven tournaments that have been filled by 66 different countries.  Of the 32 team tournaments, only nine countries have qualified for every one.  That's why moving to a 48 team tournament is so ridiculous.

8 nations remaining. 3 spots left.

UEFA decides its last spot this week.

Wednesday June 1st at 1445 ET on DAZN has Scotland v Ukraine.

Then the winner plays Wales in Cardiff on Sunday at 12. It should be on DAZN but it hasn't been listed yet. TLN normally would also show it but they don't have the matches listed at this point.

AFC playoff between UAE & Australia is on Tuesday June 7th at 1400 ET. It will be played at Ahmed bin Ali Stadium in Doha - same stadium for Canada v Belgium with same local starting time of 2200.

Winner of AFC playoff plays Peru on Monday June 13th at 1400 at the same stadium.

The other inter-continental playoff has Costa Rica v New Zealand on Tuesday June 14th at 1400 at also Ahmed bin Ali Stadium.

At this point, no Canadian provider is scheduled to show the AFC playoff or the 2 inter-continental playoffs. English streams should be available since these matches are on Australian & US streamers or cable sports channels.

Ukraine eliminates Scotland with a 3-1 win and now will play Wales.

Ukraine played them off the park. Almost like they sandbagged everyone into thinking they would be helpless. Zinchenko and Yarmo were fantastic.
