since the article is from a while back maybe he's been with the U-19s since then and if now going to the first team? wishful thinking?

I assume he was with TFCA until their season ended. He was a u-17 this year, so he's definitely too young for the first team

He is one of a great group of up-and-coming skilled central mids for Canada: Bustos, Boakai, Froese, Carreiro, Eustaquio, Doughty, Paton, Tabla.  Great to see.

I'd say about half of those players aren't actually CM's, still, better than past years I hope they're all still playing in a few years.

The fact that he signed a contract indicates he's meant for the first team. Wether or not he'll make it, depends on him. But SC Heerenveen does't have a second Pro-team, so he'll play his games for the u19's and u23's, until his play warrants a call-up for the first team.

They don't hand out 2,5 year contracts to anybody, you know. Not even to their own youth players. Obviously they see something in him (but again, this is just a first small step). Tristan has now 2,5 years to show enough progress for a new contract.

Does anyone know how Packo Deckers is doing at Heerenveen? He's 19 years old now I believe...

It appears that his youth contract has expired and he is no longer at the club. I can find no sign of him with Jong Heerenveen (since he is too old to play at the U19 level now).

Here is his introduction write-up from the Heerenveen site:

If i had to hazard a guess i would say Borges will start off with the U19's while getting some training sessions in with the reserves and even get a few run outs with them towards the end of the season.

Yeah, I also always wonder if he is still with the club.

However, he is still eligible with U19,

He was born on 5.7.1996, that means deadline day is 1.1.1996. Which means he can play for another year (until summer 1996).

Also, the club still has a profile for him here: http://www.sc-heerenveen.nl/nieuws/paco-deckers-2/10 .

Interestingly he also is listed as a Futsal player: http://drs.vijfje.nl/?id=79 .

It's all very confusing ;-).

Yup, they're all 97's and 98's on this years squad:

http://www.sc-heerenveen.nl/voetbal/jeugdteams/a-junioren

Good point. But that evidence might be coincidental.

Look at U19 squad players of PSV Eindhoven e.g.

This one is born in 1996 and is part of the squad: https://www.psv.nl/jong-psv/team/speler-jong-psv/suently-alberto.htm .

And in U20 tournaments on the national level, there can be players who are already older than 20 by the time the tournament starts.

Okay, lets move the discussion to the MOACA thread: http://www.thevoyageurs.org/forums/topic/28628-new-mother-of-all-canucks-abroad-and-domestic/?page=5

Jong is reserves. U19 is A-Junioren. Suently Alberto has been playing reserves for the past 3 years.

Correct.

Tristan will start off in the A1 which is the U19's. Young players get a lot of chances at a young age at Heerenveen so if he proves himself as a quality player they would definitely give him a chance in the 1st team as well. If you're good enough, you're old enough. They don't have a lot of depth in central midfield but the starting players are quite strong there.

Paco Deckers has quit football I believe and is studying in Groningen but I'm not 100% sure on this. He was mostly a reserve for Heerenveen U19's last year.

Paco Deckers did play a U19 match in June: http://www.az.nl/nieuws/az-onder-19-verliest-bekerfinale-na-penaltys/1

Sorry about posting the amateur player by mistake.

That was the U19 cup final from last year. I guess this was the last match of the season. He was a 2nd year A player so he had to be either moved up to the reserves or get a move elsewhere to a reserve team. I'm pretty sure he's quit football and started with university in Groningen.

Odd... he seemed to have a good future, I wonder why he wouldn't have gone for a NCAA scholarship and a potential move to MLS?  Surely he could have found himself at a great school/program.
