Loss of the National Football Stadium

They aren't planning on only hosting one game.

The stadium expansion talk came way before the current DP plan. Even now its still easy to get TFC tickets. There really is no need to expand the stadium for soccer at this point. This is totally being driven by the Leafs.

Based on what?  So far we know they're planning to host one hockey game to celebrate their 100th anniversary.  I believe Leafs will need NHL permission to host outdoor games in the future.

You really think the NHL would say no to the Leafs hosting a couple of outdoor NHL games each season?

The only reason they aren't already is that they have nowhere to do so.

The ticket and merchandise revenue for one Leaf outdoor game would probably equal an entire TFC season.

Yeah they were interested to get them cheap.  Guess what?  They rejected to buy Argos for $10 million.  So what does that say?  How come no one else is stepping up?  To put things perspective, Ottawa paid $7 million expansion fee get into CFL.  So you're telling me that a team as old as Argos playing in biggest city in Canada is possibly worth less than Ottawa?  It seems like it.

These are just negotiation tactics.

MLSE is trying to obtain government funding under the guise of 'saving the Argos'.

MLSE are smooth operators. Really they shouldn't even have gotten the $10 million from the City of Toronto, but they did. They always have their hands in the governments pockets (see NBA All-Star game).

If that's case, then all Canadian markets and Detroit will host outdoor games every year, but reality is that NHL keeps a limit how many teams and/or games are played outdoor each year.

Actually, money from government for Argos to get movable seats to make room to fit CFL field.   It's going to cost $10-20 million!  Since two level of governments (province and federal) hasn't committed any money to project, MLSE revised their plan so they can start rebuilding BMO field now without Argos/CFL in mind for now.  So this means in couple of years, if the money isn't there, then Argos aren't coming. This is why CFL is looking another ways to get money so they can bring Argos to BMO field.

That's simply not true. Those other markets aren't the same as Toronto when it comes to hockey. They really do face the threat of killing the outdoor game buzz.

But in Toronto it would be different. You could easily host 2-3 games per season in a 40,000 seat stadium. This market can handle it.

Yes, that's the MLSE/Liewiecke story being told by their media mouthpieces (ie. the Cathal Kelly's of the world).

I actually wonder what's happening with the stadium. They were supposed to show us revised/finished renderings and drawings by now and they haven't.

One thing we know is certain, they have left the door open for the Argos playing at the stadium. So the threat of it happening isn't going away for awhile.

I agree with you on this, but MLSE can face possible lawsuits from their SSH and especially those who own seat licenses who prefer Leafs to play indoor for all their games.  Also, NHL has their own agenda so who knows if they allow Maple Leafs play outdoor an annual thing.

I believe they had to leave that option open due to City council demanded it.

SSH won't care, those ticket will be worth more than the face value.

Major League Soccer
Exclusive: Sun obtains rendering of BMO Field upgrade
Kurtis Larson Toronto Sun September 03, 2014

TORONTO - Hold your horses, Hamilton, it turns out Toronto might one-up Tim Hortons Field.

A day after the new home of the Hamilton Ticats’ opened in Steel Town, the Toronto Sun got its hands on the latest BMO Field rendering.

rbdxtx.jpg

And, despite many Toronto FC fans being skeptical of the club’s new digs, the “upgraded” BMO Field looks pretty nice.

Heck, it looks like a real soccer stadium, roof and all.

“The link between what we did with TFC from (last) November on and what we’re doing with the stadium is tied hand-in-hand in order to make sure that we have a stadium that is one of the best in the league,” MLSE CEO Tim Leiweke told the Toronto Sun earlier this year.

While the latest renderings the Sun received are subject to change, the image shows roofing above three of the sections, with two extra decks built behind the east stand and the supporters’ end.

Capacity is supposed to peak at close to 30,000 for Toronto FC games once the $120 million in renovations are complete.

Phase 1 of the project is scheduled to begin this month.

Hammer, I am guessing that is where you are from.  I am as well and would love to see it but I highly doubt any CMNT games would be held there.  One main reason would be it is turf.  They prefer the natural surface.  We can dream though.

As a side note, since Tim Horton's Field is opening, I wonder if there will be considerations after the Pan-Ams to have the national team play there on the occasion.

I doubt the men's national team will play at Tim Horton's Field because it's artificial turf.

That is some sweet stadium porn. If the final product looks anything close to that I will be beyond thrilled!

TFC's stadium set to undergo massive renovations

Toronto Sun obtains new renderings of BMO Field

Kurtis Larson, Toronto Sun September 22, 2014

TORONTO - A former MLSE staffer once described current-day BMO Field as an “IKEA” stadium.

“Pull the pin and it will crumble to the ground,” he told me.

That’s not a shot at MLSE — or the city. It’s the truth.

Current-day BMO Field has served its purpose.

It’s a testament to MLS that it took just eight seasons for TFC to grow out of its current digs. But it has.

And, on Tuesday, all parties will be on site to unveil BMO Field 2.0: A massive renovation that will turn the stadium into something more than a “ready-to-assemble” venue.

“Go look at what our stadium was when it opened to what it is today,” Leiweke told the Toronto Sun last week.

“We’ve fallen so far behind it’s shocking.”

Soccer-specific stadiums in Kansas City and New York are considered world-class.

BMO Field has fallen to the bottom of the pack.

The three photos the Sun obtained ahead of Tuesday’s unveiling reveal a stark upgrade, one with a luxury club level and the addition of a few thousand new seats under roofing. Capacity is expected to grow to around 30,000.

Toronto FC general manager Tim Bezbatchenko and MLSE chairman Larry Tanenbaum are expected to speak on Tuesday.

Councillors Norm Kelly and Mark Grimes will be in attendance, too.

Although Toronto FC is expected to remain the primary tenant, MLSE’s top brass has left open the possibility of the CFL moving into BMO Field one day.

“That’s a commitment that is a legal obligation to the city and the province,” Leiweke told the Sun. “We will honour that commitment.”

Construction is under way and is expected to be completed in two phases over two years.

We'll see what happens here in regards to the Argos. While Leiweke is saying "Yes we will" it wouldn't surprise me if MLSE finds a way to weasel out of said commitment and stonewall the Argos. Then again, there have been reports that Braley has been in quite a lot of communication with MLSE in recent months. I get the feeling that he, or the CFL might cover the funding gap that the feds have refused to close in return for a solid lease, or even part of the cost of ownership. Still a bit of a fog in that regard.

So, do TFC fans like the expansion? Duane Rollins is bitching about it on Twitter. Not sure if that is a good pulse for other fans.

So far, a lot of TFC fans seem to like new BMO field.  But then again, we judging future BMO field based on pictures posted online only.  So I think we should be caution of getting excited over BMO field renovation for now.

Rollins usually has inside sources, so maybe he knows something that rest of us don't know.
