Edit: spoke too soon, ends 4-3.

Yes it was a weird game, with a lot of action. Deportivo led 2-1,

Villareal tied it up and got ahead with Julian coming too late to

cover Nihat (in what may have been offside). Villareal even led 4-2,

until Depor made it interesting in extra time. The ref blew the

whistle at 92', while another 2 min should have been played. Oh well.

Nihat with a brace for Villareal, the hosts winning 4-3.

I thought Julian played very well, Depor was using its reserve team

keeper, but hopefully a miracle will happen soon and avoid relegation.

You get it on Goltv, Gianluca? The announcers here did argue over the call but that gesture is pretty typical in those circumstances.

Yeah they had the game on here. For the announcers here there was no controversy - his arm was too protruded from his body and he timed the block rather "suspiciously" one might say.

I thought PK & red-card call for the 4th goal by Villareal was very harsh though.

Julian looked like the only player on Depor who was interested (& capable) of keeping possession, which is not something I ever expected to say about a Canadian player playing in one the top four leagues.

Guest Jeffery S.

Aguiar played 90 as Gondomar drew promotion candidate Rio Ave 2-2 away. The team is slowly pushing out of danger and towards mid table.

Belgium Cup: Klukowski and FC Bruges lost 1-0 in the Bruges derby.

Cercles Brugge went down a man before the stroke halftime and then nicked a goal at the start of the second half. Then they went down to 9 men late in the game, but Club Brugges couldn't equalize and themselves had a defender sent off a few minutes later.

Dutch Cup :

Canadians are on fire so far. Both Marcel de Jong and Jonathan de Guzman have started the game for Roda JC and Feyenoord and both guys have scored a goal so far.

Roda lead 3-0 after 90mins and will advance to the QF.

Feyenoord lead 2-0 after 50 mins and will also go through.

EDIT :

Feyenoord win 4-0 in the end and De Guzman adds 2 assist to his earlier goal.

Pilgrims set to sign 'keeper Rayner

Article Date: 16 Jan 2008

Simon Rayner

Boston United are poised to complete the signing of goalkeeper Simon Rayner from Blue Square Premier outfit Torquay United.

The former Lincoln City stopper is set to join the Pilgrims on loan for the remainder of the season, with a view to a permanent move in the summer.

Rayner has signed the necessary documentation for his return to Lincolnshire and subject to approval from the Football Conference and the Football Association, will make his debut against Nuneaton Borough on Saturday.

The 24-year-old will be best remembered by Boston supporters after his outstanding display for Torquay United at the Staffsmart Stadium in April, when he almost single-handedly kept his side in the game.

Rayner is a Canadian under-23 international and began the campaign as Torquay’s number one, but has since fallen behind Martin Rice and Southampton loanee Michael Poke in the Plainmoor pecking order.

Reflecting on Rayner’s arrival at the Staffsmart Stadium, Boston boss Tommy Taylor told bufc.co.uk: “When it became apparent last week that Paul Bastock wasn’t going to be joining us, we immediately started looking for alternatives and when Simon Rayner became available, he was the outstanding candidate.

“Simon is an imposing presence and I am sure that he will prove to be a great signing.”

Rayner has also spent spells with Bournemouth and in the Welsh Premier League with Port Talbot and Barry Town.

Further reaction to Rayner's impending arrival at the Staffsmart Stadium will follow on bufc.co.uk shortly.

I am not sure if that is a good move for Rayner. Boston Utd are currently 11th in the Conference North and 12pts of a play off place.

Hopefully he'll get some playing time and maybe get a better offer in the summer. I think Rayner will only sign long term if Boston Utd get into the Conference National

TU have a great chance to move up, but Simon lost his starting position. He wants to play, and hopefully play he will, but it will be in the Conference for the forseeable future.

David Edgar stayed on the bench for Newcastle Utd at home to Stoke City in the FA Cup 3rd Round Replay

Ten Men Newcastle win 4:1

David has spent a lot of time in the team on game day, but hasn't made many appearances. Maybe now with Kevin Keegan in charge, he'll get an opportunity to play.

This just isn't going to happen for Edgar right now. The first thing Keegan is going to do with Mike Ashley's money is buy a new back line and a holding midfielder. In the past Keegan hasn't really been the type of manager that brings youngsters through. He even got rid of the reserve side the last time he managed at Newcastle. Edgar just needs to lay low and work his socks off in the reserves and wait for his chance. Even better yet go on-loan to a Championship side and prove himself in competitive matches.

Weird thing as this ADO press release seems to suggest Josh Wagenaar entered the field at min 80th of a reserve game as a field player...

Opstelling Jong ADO Den Haag: Gianni Kamperveen; Laury Mokamba, Nick Jonkman, Danilo Arends (82. John Verhoek), Bryan Bröcker; Lorenzo Scheffer, Richard Blonk, Nick Brouwer; Jaap Jong (80. Josh Wagenaar), Rico Kogeldans, Mitchell Poot.

He did replace a field player, but that was because the goalkeeper was red-carded. Josh came in to play goal:

Referee Jan van de Graaf immediately pulled out the red card for the Den Haag keeper and awarded NEC a penalty. Josh Wagenaar took his place in the Den Haag net, replacing Jaap Jong.

Josh was beaten on the PK, as ADO went down 1-0, and also allowed a goal in the 5th minute of injury time, after his team had tied the game, to lose 2-1.
