MLS Expansion Draft Rules

Each team may protect 11 players from its 28-man roster (Senior and Developmental rosters combined).

Generation adidas players are automatically protected. (Players in this category who are "graduated" to the Senior Roster at the end of the 2006 season are not automatically protected.)

Teams may make available no more than one Senior International player.

Toronto FC may select no more than one player from any given MLS team.

Toronto FC will make a total of 10 selections.

A player who retires will not be considered part of the Senior Roster and therefore is not eligible for the draft and does not need to be protected.

Toronto FC player classifications

Domestic players - Canadian citizens or Canadian permanent residents International players

Up to four Senior Internationals (non-domestic players who turn 25 years or older during the year).

Up to three additional Senior Internationals who would qualify as Domestic players on a U.S.-based MLS team

Five Youth Internationals (up to 24 years old); two of these slots expire at the end of the team's 2008 season.

That's an easy pick

A few thoughts...

Serioux is available. Interesting.

Paulo Nagamura is one to watch. Young Brazilian midfielder who also came through the youth ranks of Arsenal, then known as Paulinho.

Would anyone consider Edson Buddle, or has the Buddle bubble burst? (say that 5 times fast-I dare ya).

Joe Franchino stood out in the final for me, but more as a rough-and-tumble type player than skilled.

Mu#55679;#57004; Mike - I wonder if it's spelled that way on his birth certificate...

A number of Americans who didn't quite cut it or returned after a career in Europe. Pass.

Clint Mathis, huh?

A lot of ex USLers in this list....

However we have a quality keeper in Nick Rimando. Serioux is a no-brainer. I don't know the other players enough to make judgements but I think Cobi Jones would make a great veteran presence for the first year(I believe he will be 37 in 2007).

Other choices anyone?

I actually laughed out loud at part of your post. Not easily done.

I dont think cobi jones is a good pick personally. From what i have seen he is past it. While he may be recognisable to some part time soccer fans, that makes him a worse choice as it screams "he isnt here for his soccer abilities, more his marketing abilities" (which are only limited anyways), and plus he takes up a foreign roster spot.

I do have a tough time commenting too much on the MLS, as backpacking and teaching have kept me out of the country for a few years, but thats how a cobi pick would look to me. There is bound to be younger player available with more of an upside than jones.

If we want a fringe player who can provide some character and leadership, Mo should work harder to bring in Canadians with those qualities.

Sweet merciful crap! There's some wonderful potential here for Vancouver fans to hate Toronto even more!

All they have to do is select Chivas GK Preston Burpo (the infamous Seattle Sounders Schnoz) and LA Galaxy backup GK Josh Saunders (current property of the Portland Timbits, and infamous for his post-season drunk driving arrest a few years back).

Saunders hates the Southside because we jingle our car keys every time he goes to field a ball! lol

I think it was a given that Serioux wanted back to Toronto; Houston has dangled a couple of young players with lots of potential there, expecting to lose Adrian I guess. I would take Mathis instead of Jones. From LA, Gordon or Saunders are good young players. Don't know the Chivas roster that well, but John O'Brien is surprisingly available but he might be damaged goods.

I'll repeat my one warning from a month or so ago, please don't pick anyone named Rusty.

Wasn't Jovan Kirovski a big time prospect a while back???

Yep, so was Buddle. Andy Williams might be a good pick as well. Ex-Mustang Sergei Raad has good wheels and is young.

. I would take Mathis instead of Jones.

Definitely not Clint Mathis, too much of a hit on the Salary Cap, and has not produced since he came back from Germany.

Interestingly Chivas has left a lot of young players unprotected.

My picks (by team)

Chicago - Nate Jaqua (F)

Chivas - Preston Burpo (GK) (Just to watch the Vancouver fans' skins crawl :))

Columbus - Sebastian Rozenthal (F)

Colorado - Jovan Kirovski (F)

FC Dallas - Bobby Rhine (D)

Houston - Adrian Serioux (M-D)

DC United - Jamil Walker (M-F)

Kansas City - Dave van den Bergh (F)

Los Angeles - Josh Gardner (F)

New England - Joe Franchino (D)

New York - Edson Buddle (F)

Salt Lake - Jason Kreis (F)

I realize that this list is offence intensive. But hey, Canada is known for our defenders, we can grow them at will :)

To get Serioux is a bonus. Some of the other's like Kirovski have big salaries. I wonder if any others could be trade bait for other players...would be good for example to try to pry Jazic out of LA Galaxy....perhaps they may be interested in someone who is available in the draft. That would probably be my first call to Yallop; and to Houston about a trade for DeRossario.

Williams could play in the league as a Canadian so he is likely a no brainer as well (and he played in 29 games last year for salt lake so is not a waste)

I just did an article for the http://www.redpatchboys.ca website entitled The expansion draft and imminent signing announcements that lists the players available along with salaries and nationalities. I don't doubt I made a few slips but I think it helps illustrate what the teams have done with their protected lists and makes it easier to try to work out what TFC should do.

"Toronto FC officials have already said they won't sign a marquee player, despite the recent approval of the "Beckham Rule." In a move meant to improve tickets sales as much as the product on the field, the rule allows teams to sign a superstar player such as David Beckham, Ronaldo or Luis Figo, outside of the US$2 million salary cap.

Johnston said the same goes for today's draft. He won't select a player on name recognition, and there are a few of those on the unprotected list, including Jason Kreis (Real Salt Lake), the MLS all-time leading scorer and Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder Cobi Jones."

Despite commenting on this before, I can't help but to again wonder if TFC realistically expects TO fans to be flocking to the stadium to see Jim Brennan and Serioux play?? I respect the general idea of promoting the best on-field product without entertainment or fan-appeal being serious considerations - it's a very pure soccer philosophy. And they may very well put together a team that can compete on a regular basis, but to think that a team of hardworking anonymous-type players and a few ex-Lynx are going to move a lot of seats is just ludicrous at best.

Los Angeles Galaxy

Likely to take: Kyle Veris, defender. Darkhorse pick: Paulo Nagamura, midfielder.

<channels wildboy26 mindset>

See? I told you Nagamura was one to go after-and ESPN agrees! I'm always right!

</channelling of wildboy26 mindset>

Whew...it's like a Vulcan mind meld, it's that exhausting...
