Well I must tip my hat to the CSA and the City of Toronto for finally getting the stadium project done. I'll be even happier to hear the shovels have hit the ground.

This deal was crucial to the staging of the WYC tournament and will showcase Toronto to the world.

I expect the final will be held there so I will now likely miss seeing any games live but overall it is great news.

I herd that the final may be held in Edmonton's commonwelth stadium, due to the capacity. Don't hold me to it though... It's just something I herd through the grapevine. :D

it's Never Over till it's Over

is it Over

The Canadian Soccer Association and its partners - Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE), the Ontario and Federal Governments as well as the City of Toronto - have been given the approval of Toronto City’s Council to construct a 20,000 seat soccer-specific stadium on the grounds of Exhibition Place.

City council voted 25 to 13 in favour of the stadium project.

"I applaud the council for acting in the best interest of the City of Toronto, for a wide variety of community groups and all Torontonians in general. The stadium and its construction will create jobs, drive economic development and tourism, and create a larger stage for Toronto to hold international sports and entertainment events. It will also support further growth for soccer in Canada," said Richard Peddie, President of MLSE.

"We look forward to working with the three levels of government as we prepare for construction of the stadium in early 2006 and while we finalize our franchise agreement with Major League Soccer."

The $62.8-million stadium is being built specifically for the staging of the FIFA World Youth Championship - Canada 2007 that will kickoff in July 2007 in Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Edmonton, Vancouver and Victoria and will be the largest single-sport event ever held in Canada.

The biennial event is second only to the FIFA World Cup in size and scope and will showcase the most talented under-20 soccer players in the world. The tournament has been the coming-out party for some of the game’s top players - Maradona, Saviola, Raúl, Marco Van Basten, Luis Figo, Rui Costa, Thierry Henry, Adriano, Roberto Carlos, Bebeto and Dunga as well as Canada’s Craig Forrest and many members of the current Men’s World Cup Team including Julian de Guzman, Paul Stalteri, Atiba Hutchinson and Iain Hume.

The facility will also be a regular home for both the Men’s and Women’s National Teams as well as a home for thousands of players in the Greater Toronto Area. The City of Toronto-owned stadium will have an air-filled bubble erected over the playing surface during the winter months, guaranteeing a minimum of 100 days of community usage throughout the year.

The city council vote now paves the way for the stadium be the home of Toronto’s newest professional sports franchise.

Major League Soccer (MLS) Commissioner Don Garber announced on October 11, 2005 that Maple Leafs Sports & Entertainment had been granted the exclusive rights through October 31, 2005 to negotiate an agreement to acquire the rights to a Major League Soccer expansion team that will commence play in Toronto in 2007.

"Toronto would be an excellent addition to Major League Soccer under the leadership of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, one of the preeminent sports and entertainment companies in the world," Commissioner Garber said. "We are enthusiastic about bringing an MLS team to Toronto and are prepared to host the 2008 All-Star Game and an MLS Cup in Toronto by 2012."

Funding for the project will be come from a number of sources.

The Federal Government, through Infrastructure Canada, has agreed to contribute $27-million while the Ontario Government has committed a further $8-million.

MLSE has agreed to pay a total of $18-million ($8-million toward the construction and a further $10-million to secure the naming rights for the stadium). The group has also agreed to provide a $2-million guarantee against operational losses.

The City of Toronto will contribute $9.8-million and will own the stadium. In the agreement struck with the City of Toronto, Exhibition Place, the CSA, and MLSE in mid-October, the sports and entertainment company would be responsible for the management of the facility.

Something that hasn't been talked about - with the MLSE promoting national team games during Leaf, Raptors and Black Blizzard Squirrels matches, you really have to get excited about the prospect of larger and more pro Canadian crowds getting into the national team in Toronto. Which is exactly what we need.

Beautiful.

Little slow aren't you. This is the very best thing what ever happened in Canadian soccer and let's face it the Canadian sporting world.

Soccer now accepted by the who is who in Canadian sports and certainly by those that have some very good reasons to see it flourish, this thing is beyond mind boggling. Finally. i kind of accepted that this day may be 10 years or so away, but it happened today. As i said so many times before we must generate and force the acceptance of our sport into the Candian media mainstream. It is going to be difficult for some of these guys to become a protestant after having been a catholic, but that's how dramatic it will be for some or most of them. All these years we have been the laughing stock and jokes among them. They will show interest in our players, and wait if we see the likes of man u or others competeng here. This stadium will be rocking, because the media will make sure that we now will be properly informed.Gentlemen in my manny years of soccer promotions it was always a huge problem to get these guys to any story prior to any game. this now will change. We will be kept informed and we will be able to have our kids now identify with our players. This u-20 tournament will be an eye opener big time.I remember in 1984 when I managed to get Brian Williams to come to the Robbie registration. He was totally blown away, all these teams from all over the world,as was the case with Global,CFMT and CFTO. This is were Gerry Dobson got his first real exposure to out game and CFTO became a big promotor of the Robbie. We managed to get great media interest and the Robbie became well known in the propere circles. This time all of soccer will benefit and we can finally do away with the jerkins, and Mcg.Great day, great partners, great future and great games to watch.GL I am glad to see your vision being sa accurate and the excitement to come will be second to none.

Congratulations, Toronto! As a supporter of MetroStars of Major League Soccer, I'm excited to welcome you all into our MLS family. I'm looking forward to seeing Toronto in action on the field in 2007 and to make road trips up to games when MetroStars are visiting you.

This is wonderful for Canada. You finally have a Division 1 squad of your very own to help you develop your best players to the top level. I'm looking forward to the competition you will give our boys in Team USA in the coming years.

now to lobby like mad the sports minister to make sure the turf is grass so it can be used by the national soccer and rugby teams. If the government is contributing 24 million it should be suitable for our national soccer and rugby teams.

A tray grass system should be used so that grass can be available for MLS, Rugby and Soccer Internationals.

So where is Robert on this day of celebration?

We've already seen pearls of wisdom from DoyleG and G Man, why not make it a troll trifecta, Robert?

Great news that the council voted for the stadium. I had a feeling it would be ok, the councillors doing the most ball-breaking were the usual suspects. One of them was advocating a curfew for kids under 16 in yesterdays council meeting.

For a bit of trivia, Frances Nunziata is John Nunziata's sister.

Caugth a bit of McClown driving home from work. He and Eliot Friedman were playing clips from the debate. They laughed at Joe Pantalone and were supportive of Ford, LePreti and the rest of the naysayers. A lot of the established sports types are still against this. Heard Norm Rumack and his sidekick both take a shot at this stadium. As much as we (or myself and a few others at least) wanted this to fly under the radar, it didn't. I've never seen this kind of outrage before (at least from sport media types). Most projects like this get passed without any notice. I guess the good thing is that most sports fans are usually rather passive when it comes to anything political.

Anyways. We past the supposed last hurdle. Woo hoo!!!!! Lets get this thing built now.

The latest piece of tripe from Dave Jerkins. Hey buddy, feel an ulcer coming on yet?

I find it hilarious that just last month Jerkins wrote an article supporting the possibility that MLSE might bring an NFL team to Toronto.

Hey guys some of the important the media is still against us.The question is should we ignore them. They seem to have a mission and are probably reflecting a segment of our own population that don't want soccer. One of the coucil members even said that she received many objections from her people insisting that she votes against it and in fact they were in a large majority. This silent group is what the jerkins are representing.

I was even surprised that even some of the ethnis background councilors appear to be against it.They should have known better. We still have a long selling road ahead of us.Wait till we start singing in this stadium, totally foreign to the toronto crowds.Anyway it is all fun from now on and as long as we know what is out there and try to convert them that is it.

Looks like Jerkins et al will now make it their mission to ensure MLS fails in Toronto. They'll likely keep writing articles ridiculing soccer in general and MLS/Canada in particular, stepping up the pace as the Blizzard's first game draws near. Hell, I could even see Perkins trying to discourage people from attending the WYC.

How on earth is it these people are permitted a public forum in which to vomit out their venomous bile?
