In regards to teams - the ability and tactics that your team will use in its matches are based on three main factors: your formation (and your expectation of your opponent's formation), your skill level, and your strategy.

FORMATION
Fairly self-explanatory - your team's formation in a D/M/F setup (I only made three slots for this, so you won't be able to do a 4-2-3-1 or anything).  You can also guess what your opponent's formation is going to be - the closer you are, the less successful your opponent will be.

SKILL
Your team's skill is divided into four main categories, each containing four separate skills.  You start with 30 points in each category, and for the first three weeks, you can assign them however you like (gives you time to experiment).  After the third week, they'll get locked, and you won't be able to reassign freely.

You can increase your skill in a couple of ways.  Firstly, for every league game you win, you'll get two skill points that you can assign however you like.  For a tie, each team will get one.  Skill points will also be awarded for each round you advance through in the Voyageurs' Cup (2), earning promotion to the first division (10), and to a lucky loser randomly selected from that week's losing teams (2).

Skill categories are as follows:

Goalscoring category

  • Power: the speed of shots on net
  • Aim: the targeting ability for shots on net
  • Header: your header ability for shots on net
  • Offensive offside: your ability to obtain favourable offside calls on offense

Offensive category

  • Passing: your ability to accurately pass a ball to a teammate
  • Dribble: your ability to run with a ball
  • Lead: your ability to move to and receive a passed ball from a teammate
  • Shield: your ability to protect a ball you're running with

Defensive category

  • Mark: your ability to guard and prevent possible passing lanes
  • Challenge: your ability to pressure an opponent running with the ball
  • Intercept: your ability to intercept a ball which has been passed to an opponent
  • Tackle: your ability to take possession of a ball carried by an opponent

Goal-protecting category

  • Block: the ability of your defenders to block a shot on net
  • Save: the ability of your goalkeeper to save a shot which makes it to the net
  • Clear: the ability of your defenders to prevent chances from headers
  • Defensive offside: your ability to obtain favourable offside calls on defense

STRATEGY

Skill is important, but it's only important if you use it properly, and that's where your strategy comes in.  Each strategy works on a scale from -2 to +2, and you can change it by any amount at any time.  Depending on your strategy, your team will use different tactics on the field.

Offensive width: Use the center of the field (-2) .. (+2) Use the outside of the field
Offensive ball movement: Run with the ball (-2) .. (+2) Pass the ball
Shot preference: Shots from close range (-2) .. (+2) Shots from long distance
Defensive width: Defend the center of the field (-2) .. (+2) Defend the outside of the field
Defensive ball movement: Defend again runs (-2) .. (+2) Defend against passes
Diving preference: Stay on your feet (-2) .. (+2) Roll on the ground
Offensive offside: Conservative offside game (-2) .. (+2) Take chances
Defensive offside: Conservative offside game (-2) .. (+2) Take chances
Offensive pressure: Sit back (-2) .. (+2) Push hard
Defensive pressure: Sit back (-2) .. (+2) Push hard

So, how do the roster selections work?

I'm not going to do a draft or anything like that - you can send me the names & positions of (up to) 18 players and they'll be included in the matches.  The abilities of your players are determined by the skill levels above.  I may include some variations based on some "star player" rating in the future, but it hasn't been a priority.

PM sent.

What if I offered to compile a list of Canadian players via the MOACA, and then randomize the list to distribute those players to the 28 clubs before April 22?

how do we set this stuff each week? Should we PM you?

That would be easiest.

Are there restrictions to the formations, beyond only being three slots? ie, could someone choose to go 10-0-0? Does your system have home field advantage?

Super excited, btw.

Yes, you can do 10-0-0.  A large part of the work from here on out will be making sure things are balanced appropriately, and I have no idea what will happen if you try that.

There is a very slight modifier for home field advantage.  I will probably make it slighter, but it will be there in some form.  Have to make sure it's appropriate.

Feel free, but I'm not going to make people use it - I don't want it to take away from the fun of people being able to pick their own dream team.

PM sent to you Gopherbashi for my opening match v Inter Regina - formations, skills, and strategy. My second PM includes formation prediction for Inter Regina.

As for play-offs, I vote for no play-offs. Club who finishes top of Division 1 win the title for 2017. Bottom 2 or 3 D1 clubs relegated to D2. Top two or three clubs in D2 get promoted to D1. I'm a purist.

But I will follow the masses no matter the vote.

No playoffs necessary at the end of top division play. At that level, it's pretty straightforward who the champion is.

I've PMed my team, etc. Working on a fun little package/site for Porcupine Gold Rush FC. For anyone interested, here's my player list. Only a few are made-up players (the 2 Ukrainians, the Honduran, the Attawapiskat Greens), Vincent Cavalieri does play in TPMSL, but the team name is fiction, and the PCSL Highlanders player is my 14-month old son that I imagine playing in Canadian Premier League one day.

OK, I submitted my roster and tactics through private message - need it be posted here??

No. But if you think we'd find your roster interesting, then go for it.

You specifically do not want to post your formation/strategy arrangements here, as they could affect what your opponent chooses for their setup.
