Cup Defence Could Bolster League Form

Voyageurs Cup games against top MLS side Montreal can help set stage for MLS run

Toronto FC must win the Voyageurs Cup for the fifth straight year, not only because it books the Reds passage to the CONCACAF Champions League and gives fans national bragging rights, but winning a trophy could be the catalyst for Ryan Nelsen’s club to achieve new heights in Major League Soccer.

There is a theory that the Amway Canadian Championship and the subsequent CCL matches are a hindrance to TFC’s progress in MLS. Since Toronto has never been a dominant MLS side, is it really fair or accurate to suggest there is a drop in league performance when cup matches enter the picture?

Now with a new coaching staff and squad, one that works hard in every match, has won points in five of seven outings – but continues to struggle closing out games – a successful cup run could give them the confidence to see matters to the end and pick up those points left on the pitch.

The first opponent, Montreal Impact (Wednesday, 7:30 p.m. ET at BMO Field – Tickets), is tied for second place in MLS’ Eastern Conference and six points ahead of Toronto. Success over two legs against this arch-rival will prove to the club and fans just how far the Reds have come in the short time that Nelsen & co. have pieced together possibly the most competitive TFC squad since early 2010, the last time Toronto demonstrated any threat of moving up the league table into the playoff picture.

Heart-wrenching last minute goals conceded against LA Galaxy, Philadelphia Union and most recently, 10-man Houston Dynamo last Saturday, have cost TFC six points, the same margin by which Montreal leads Toronto in MLS standings, occupying one of the five MLS Cup Playoffs spots in the East.

“It’s difficult because you try your best to get ahead and try and win the game,” club’s leading goal scorer Robert Earnshaw said following the latest heartbreak. “It’s frustrating, even more, because it’s been a few weeks now,” he said of the various disappointments.

“It needs to stop now if we’re going to improve and actually go to the next level.”

The next best chance to get there happens to coincide with a Canadian title defence against a top MLS side that starts on Wednesday at BMO Field.

Canadian Championship: Montreal Impact hope the "Spirit of 2008" is with them again this year

Biello, Jordan look back on special night in Toronto

MONTREAL –The final whistle just couldn’t come quick enough for the travelling Montreal supporters on the evening of July 22, 2008.

The Montreal Impact were valiantly defending their goal against Toronto FC at BMO Field, protecting the 1-1 score at all costs. Salvaging a point here would suffice to top the Reds in the 2008 Canadian Championship standings – a round-robin tournament at the time.

Somehow, in Muhammad Ali-esque fashion, Montreal rolled with the endless array of punches. Somehow, Jeff Cunningham missed the game-winner, failing to tap a loose ball into a deserted net. And somehow, Montreal triumphed in the inaugural Canadian Championship and picked up its seventh straight Voyageurs’ Cup.

READ: Impact look to spread playing time across the roster in Canadian Championship

“That was a game where you just had 11 guys on the field that were so totally committed to each other,” Impact director of soccer operations and 2008 goalkeeper Matt Jordan told MLSsoccer.com. “At that time, the 11 and the guys on the bench, we had 18 guys who, every time we stepped on the field, showed a commitment to each other that was beyond strong. That’s how we approached that game: we did everything we could to fight for one another.”

Montreal’s subsequent group stage success and run to the 2008-09 CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals was assuredly in the players’ minds when, months after the run ended, they looked irresistible as they crushed the Vancouver Whitecaps 6-3 on aggregate in the 2009 USL First Division playoff final. But in the Canadian Championship, it was another story: from that 2008 tournament-clinching game until the Impact’s 2-1 win against Toronto FC on April 7, 2012, Montreal lost every derby against TFC, who won every edition of the tournament.

READ: Hostilities renewed between Montreal, Toronto ahead of Canadian Championship

“We were a second-division team going up against Toronto for another two years after that first Championship, so from the start, it’s a bit difficult,” assistant coach Mauro Biello said. “Last year, we got off to a bad start and they were able to win it. We feel strong about our team this year and we think our chances are good.”

The opportunity to turn the tide is as good as it has been in the past four years. All of Montreal’s four wins in MLS this term had ‘character’ written all over them. Various players and staff members have won national cups, in North America or elsewhere. And the spirit of the 2008 ACC-winning squad might inspire them this time.

“Our commitment to each other was what helped carry us through that CONCACAF Champions League run we made,” Jordan said. “We were just a bunch of hard-working guys that were very committed to working for one another.”

Hostilities renewed between the Impact and Toronto FC in Amway Canadian Championship

Rivalry heating up ahead of Wednesday's game in Toronto

With a few injuries to his lineup, Toronto FC head coach Ryan Nelsen told the media that he’s willing to do whatever it takes to win the Canadian Championship, even if it means dressing his coaches to play the Impact next Wednesday at BMO Field at 7:30pm (ET).

His rival down the 401 feels just the same way.

“It’s nice to have an opponent who is willing to do everything to win,” said Impact head coach Marco Schällibaum. “It elevates the challenge, but we are not afraid. We want to absolutely win the game. We respect them as an opponent and we know it won’t be an easy first game. It’s good to see them motivated. It means we’ll have an exciting matchup.”

“There is a lot of pride that comes from a tournament like this,” explained Impact homegrown defender Karl W. Ouimette. “Beating your long-time rivals from BC and Ontario is always a big deal. Even at the youth levels, I remember how the rivalry between provinces was intense.”

Added to the prestige of being named Canada’s top team is the heated opposition between these two clubs that has built over the years.

“There is the history between the clubs that makes this tournament even more special,” said Impact midfielder Patrice Bernier. “Last season we played TFC five times, this season is the same, and we have always played some tight, difficult games. I’m expecting an aggressive matchup with a lot of intensity.”

However, the approach to this rivalry game will be a little different, with a second leg scheduled next Wednesday at Stade Saputo.

“The difference here is there is the return match,” added Schällibaum. “We have to play well tactically on the road and then we come home to play at Stade Saputo in front of our supporters where we have home field advantage where we will have the last word.”

Familiar faces at FC Edmonton

Close connections to Canadian Championship opponents

When Vancouver Whitecaps FC begin their 2013 Amway Canadian Championship campaign away at FC Edmonton on Wednesday it will be a case of better the devil you know than the devil you don't as they come up against plenty of familiar faces.

Vancouver’s closest regional Canadian rivals have a squad peppered with players who have turned out for the ‘Caps at some point in their career and even the man at the helm, Colin Miller, has recent experience this side of the Rockies.

Between 2009 and 2011 Miller was on Whitecaps FC’s coaching staff, joining the club in 2010 while the club was in the second division as first team assistant coach under Teitur Thordarson before making the step up with the team to MLS in 2011.

Miller, who moved to Vancouver at the age of ten, sought to surround himself with familiar faces when he was appointed head coach at FC Edmonton in November 2012.

One of his first additions was defender Wes Knight, a player who will be well-known to Whitecaps FC fans for a three-year spell in Vancouver. The South Carolina native made 59 appearances for the Blue and White in the 2009 and 2010 seasons, in which he was a finalist for the 2009 USL-1 Rookie of the Year and voted for the "Fan Favourite" award in 2010. Knight then stayed on with the ‘Caps as they embarked on their inaugural MLS campaign.

The American started Vancouver's inaugural MLS match on the bench, but wrote his name into 'Caps soccer folklore when he came on in the 69th minute for Russell Teibert and just three minutes later provided an assist for Eric Hassli to seal a 4-2 win against Toronto FC.

Knight went on to make 12 appearances for Vancouver in the 2011 MLS season before moving on to San Antonio Scorpions in 2012, where he won the NASL regular season title. When his former coach Miller came calling, Knight had little hesitation in joining the Eddies this past offseason.

Unfortunately for Knight, it appears that he will miss the Amway Canadian Championship with a left foot injury.

Joining Knight on Edmonton's roster is former Whitecaps FC teammate Carlyle Mitchell.

Mitchell, a Trinidad and Tobago international, was added by Miller on loan from the ‘Caps earlier this year. Although he is ineligible to play in the Amway Canadian Championship against the 'Caps, he will have a most vested interest in this semi-final series.

During the offseason, Miller also captured the signature of young striker Sadi Jalili, another player who has recent experience with Vancouver having spent part of 2012 in the Whitecaps FC Residency program.

The young prospect recently followed in the footsteps of his head coach by making his NASL debut at the tender age of 17, the age at which Miller made his debut for Toronto Blizard in 1982, when he came on as a substitute in the recent 2-1 loss away to Martin Rennie’s former club Carolina Railhawks.

Another player with 'Caps ties is midfielder Chris Nurse. Although the Guyana international has never played for Whitecaps FC he still has his connections in the ‘Caps dressing room having played under Martin Rennie in Carolina and counting midfield dynamo Nigel Reo-Coker as one of his closest friends.

The two know each other from playing Sunday league football together back in England when they were younger, and Nurse was even due to be groomsman at Reo-Coker’s wedding but was unable to attend due to his participation in Guyana’s World Cup Qualifiers.

A mainstay of the FC Edmonton defence over the past two seasons, Antonio Rago is the final player with Whitecaps FC on his resume. The Alberta native spent time in the Whitecaps FC Residency program in 2008 before joining his hometown team in 2011.

Rago almost came back to bite Vancouver in last season’s edition of the Amway Canadian Championship, providing an assist for Yashir Pinto to halve the aggregate deficit in the second leg of the semi-final at BC Place before a trio of late goals for the ‘Caps sealed a place in the final.

The ‘Caps will be looking to emulate last year’s success against FC Edmonton, where they won 5-1 over two legs, as they look to advance to this year’s final.

And with so many familiar faces in the Eddies’ ranks, there are certainly bragging rights on the line.

------------------------------------------------

http://www.whitecapsfc.com/news/2013/04/mix-and-match

VANCOUVER, BC — When Vancouver Whitecaps FC trot out against FC Edmonton on Wednesday in the first leg of the 2013 Amway Canadian Championship semifinal (6:30 p.m. PT, Sportsnet, TEAM 1410 radio and teamradio.ca), it will likely be a mixed lineup featuring fringe players and regular starters.

The Eddies play in the second-division NASL, and the temptation in such situations is to make wholesale changes – but head coach Martin Rennie suggested on Monday that it won’t be an outright "B" team.

“One of the things for us is that we don’t have a ton of veterans all healthy at the same time right now,” Rennie said. “But we’ll have a couple of guys in there who are veterans. But we’ve got a young team and we’ve got a lot of good young players.

“We want them to be in there as well. It depends – you could look at Camilo as an MLS veteran, [Darren] Mattocks has played a lot of games. Those guys come into contention, but there’ll be other experienced players too.”

When a reporter asked Rennie if he was aware of recent press criticism of some of his team selection decisions in recent weeks – especially in the wake of Saturday’s 2-0 defeat to FC Dallas, the Scottish tactician suggested that he is mixing up the lineup to keep players fresh during a busy stretch.

The omissions of established players such as Darren Mattocks, Gershon Koffie and Camilo from the starting lineup in favor of the likes of Matt Watson, Tom Heinemann and Erik Hurtado came under close scrutiny following the match.

“I want to put [out] a strong team on Wednesday,” Rennie said. “I think some of those guys who didn’t play in the game against Dallas will come into contention for Wednesday, so that’s part of it. I don’t want them to all play every game. I don’t think they’re going to play Saturday, Wednesday, Saturday, Wednesday, Saturday, Wednesday, all the way through.”

The Canadian Championship is a bit of a tightrope to walk for the 'Caps given their recent MLS run of five winless matches, but Rennie is looking on it as a chance to gain some momentum.

While the Voyageurs Cup awarded to the tournament champion is a trophy in itself, the more significant carrot on offer is qualification for the CONCACAF Champions League such an achievement would bring.

“I think it’s a very important competition,” Rennie said. “Perhaps that’s part of the lineup that we played in the last game. That just shows you just how important we think this competition is. We’ll have a strong lineup coming into this game.

“We want to get into the final, and then we want to win the final. Of course, that would be the first time the club’s done it, and it would also give us a chance to play in the CONCACAF Champions League.”

Designated Player Kenny Miller is currently in the United Kingdom as his wife is having a baby, and will not be available for Wednesday's match. The Scotsman has struggled with a hamstring injury in recent weeks but Rennie says he could be in contention for Saturday's match at BC Place against FC Dallas after arriving back in Vancouver on Wednesday.

Corey Hertzog is still getting over concussion symptoms after a head-to-head collision with Adam Clement in training last week but could play on Saturday barring a setback.

Omar Salgado has yet to play a minute for the 'Caps this season due to a foot injury, but has received a call-up for the U.S. Under-20 national team for a training camp from April 22 to 29 in Carson, California, ahead of the U-20 World Cup this July in Turkey. That rules him out of Wednesday's match as well as Saturday's game against FC Dallas.

Also interested in the poll. I will never count Rochat as Canadian...Koffie if and when it is official, never before. Anyways, I agree, and also put down 10 or more.

Definition for CANADIAN Player:

1 - Played for what National Team at Senior Level

2 - Has which citizenship(multiple citizenship holders see point 1)

3 - Labelled as X citizen by CSA/MLS/NASL

Alain Rochat played for Switzerland so that makes him SWISS. Or Swiss footballer of Canadian Heritage.

Koffie is a Ghanian National with permanent resident status. Basically he can work here, pay taxes but CANNOT VOTE. So he is NOT Canadian. Plus he played for a Ghanian U20 side.

Here's what I think

Montreal: Ouimette, Tissot will start for sure. Nesta and Ferrari stayed back. Bernier should play, but he could start on the bench.

Toronto: Morgan will start, Bekker and Osorio start according to John Molinaro's prediction. Doubt that Henry starts.

Vancouver: Teibert maybe?

Edmonton: LeRoy, Edward, Saiko, Mirabelli, Cox

That sounds like 12 in my calculations. So, I'd say 10 or 11

APPLE PIE IN THE SKY HIGH HOPES

preview by Tobias Oliva

Who are we kidding. This is going to be a tough one. A combination of self-belief, luck and persistence will hopefully see the Eddies through. That is up to the coaches and players though. For now, all we can do is analyze…

Form

Edmonton returns home off two defeats to Carolina and Minnesota, and just a point against Fort Lauderdale. Edmonton lies in 6th place and leads last place Fort Lauderdale only on goal difference.*Vancouver is coming to Edmonton off the heels of a 2-0 defeat at Western Conference and MLS-leading FC Dallas. After a promising start with two wins over TFC and Columbus at home, the Whitecaps have yet to win with only three points in the last five games. Although it’s not much of a silver lining, only one of those games were at home. Vancouver occupies 7th place in the Western Conference.

Both teams aren’t having the best of times right now, but as favoured as they are, you cannot blame the Whitecaps for treating this like a confidence builder. There is a fine line however between confidence and hubris; and Rennie will not let his team fall into the latter. VWFC’s selection of players in the loss against Dallas suggests that Rennie is mixing established and squad rotation players for at least this match against Edmonton. This was also the case last year.

If the first few games are any indication, Edmonton open their matches with good possession, encouraging play and their fair share of chances. The first defensive test tends to come after this opening sequence, and the toughest test usually past the midway point of the 2nd half. In fact, Edmonton has given up a goal right after the 70′ mark in all three matches so far. This could be attributed to a tired or frustrated defensive effort as a team towards the end. Against a squad like Vancouver’s, this defence may face similar adversity even earlier. This underlies an inherent need for leadership on this team and they will need it quickly. If Edmonton makes it out of the half intact, it will do wonders for their confidence.

Coaching

This part of the matchup is intriguing merely for the storylines rather than the coaching styles. Miller was let go by the ‘Caps once Rennie took over after guiding Carolina to the NASL final in 2011. Rennie is familiar with Edmonton but this is also a largely different Eddies squad from years previous. We’ve seen what Miller can do with a rag-tag bunch of Canadians and eek out a solid defensive effort against the Americans.

Selection

Lance Parker is the final stand between Vancouver’s comparatively potent offense and the Edmonton net. With the defence decimated by injuries and compounded further by the ineligibility of Mitchell, a*confident and perhaps inspired performance will be required from Parker in both legs.

With the team back in Canada, this allows Mallan Roberts to be available for selection for the first time (he does not have his Canadian passport yet).*Mallan could very well be poised to make his pro debut against an MLS squad in replacing Mitchell, but has a lot of work to do to partner with LeRoy at the back. FCE lost 4-1 in a preseason friendly to the ‘Caps reserves with this partnership.

Offensively, while Shaun Saiko’s value to the team is widely known, Daryl Fordyce can also be relied upon to spearhead the attacks. In the three games for Edmonton so far, Fordyce has shown his ability to hold up play deep in the opponent’s end either set up a shot or take one himself. Luck has kept him out of scoring for now. Perhaps a familiar and also ex-Linfield face in the lineup, Robert Garrett, can add to this confidence.

Cox*did not have the best of games against Minnesota, and Jalali is hot on his tail, but Cox gets the start tomorrow mainly because of size and experience. Do look for Jalali or even Boakai to come off the bench. Nurse made his first appearance in an Edmonton shirt against Minnesota bouncing back from a hamstring issue. Nurse will probably be employed to help out in the midfield and shore up defensively along side Hlavaty.

I think Edmonton needs freakish weather (beyond just plain cold) to stand any sliver of a chance in this one. I'm sure VWFC will be coached to try and put the series away tomorrow so that they don't need to worry about the following match too much.

I predict 4-0 Vancouver. What I HOPE for is a competitive match with a much closer scorelines with many Canadians featuring prominently.

The Eddies are blowing my mind right now! It's a shame Fordyce can't buy a goal right now.

If they can hang on (and there's a long way to go), they need to market the hell out of this win and build up the fanbase.

They were hard done in the end. The three goals they gave up were all frustrating in one way or another. Tough luck for a lower division club trying to get a result against stronger opposition.

The TFC/Impact game was very poor in the first half but much better in the second. No away goal so Montreal has their work cut out for them at home. You definitely had the better officiating crew.

The Eddies played a darn near perfect bunker & counter game. Scored on 2 of their 3 serious chances. On our first goal Mattocks was offside by 2-3 feet and affected play without touching the ball. The foul on Camilo for the PK was soft and probably a makeup call for the non-call on Harvey and several other fouls in the box that were not called. Let's hope that's the last we see of that Pet & his bunch... oh wait this is CSA officials so it could get worse :(

Our third goal was just pure bad luck for the Eddies. Defender heads a ball away from the center of his net, off the post and right to the feet of a charging Cap. Tough break on that one. On the positive side for the Eddies if they play like that for the full season they'll take D2 by storm. Solid play all around, good shape defending and opportunistic scoring.

Of the 2 games the Edmonton vs Vancouver was way more entertaining.

Here is to everyone having a safe trip back and let's hope that all the players go through our tournament without serious injuries.

Cheers

Terrible prediction but I guess my wish came true. Happy to see Cox do well again in a more competitive match against some of the same Caps. Saiko also looked strong. Is it just me or were there a LOT of skied balls in this match?

Harsh result for Eddies whom I thought deserved a draw at least. Camilo went down very easy for that PK, Mattocks looked offside on first Camilo goal and caveman Heinemann's goal was fluke. If Eddies put away that chance in 1st half when the Caps were on the backfoot to make it 3-1... 2-1 and trying to hold a lead against a stronger Caps squad was going to be hard, esp with fitness issues as the game was ending. But Eddies were undone by a very soft PK call late game... Eddies can be proud for putting up a good fight. As team chemistry develops, hopefully the Eddies can put a better result for next time.
