TFC Roster Dance 2010

Normally wouldn't do this given the source but here's a snippet from mlsrumours.com:-

http://www.mls-rumors.net/7857/2010/04/incoming-iwan-redan-kerry-baptiste-and-canadian-international-adrian-cann-to-toronto-fc/

This email came in from one of MLSR sources.

Lots of going on at TFC today, club Captain Jim Brennan steps down to take up a position as assistant GM, reportedly due to personality conflicts with Preki. Also, strikers Iwan Redan, a Dutch player best know for headbutting one of his own players during a game, and Kerry Baptiste, a prolific TNT international, are strongly rumoured be signing with the club. Canadian international Adrian Cann, an off-again, on-again trialist with the club, was seen at training today.

What gives this some credibility is that Kerry Baptiste was linked to TFC previously during the off season but preferred to go on trial with Ipswich Town:-

so there may already be a discovery claim in on him. If the Preki vs Jim Brennan differences is legit I suspect the issue would revolve around Brennan's tendency to launch long balls. If Cann were signed maybe Ty Harden would slide over to left back in the short term.

You could google the definitive answers. From memory the primary transfer window closes on the 15th of this month but the secondary one opens up again in July. Trades within the league and the signing of certain out of contract players will be possible throughout the season up until the final roster freeze date in mid-September and even then there are still some emergency situations in which players can be added.

More on the background to Brennan's decision from Gareth Wheeler:-

http://www.torontosun.com/sports/soccer/2010/04/07/13494606.html

...Brennan could not be reached for comment, but reports surfaced Tuesday of a bust-up between Brennan and head coach Preki.

The Score's Kristian Jack also cited a former TFC player claiming Brennan was unhappy with his head coach.

Preki has been a divisive figure since joining the club last November. The head coach has been quick to determine who fits his plan and who doesn't, and it sure seems like Brennan is the latest casualty.

High-ranking sources at TFC suggest Brennan's exit has been in the cards since November, the same time Preki was hired. However, the same source indicates Brennan's decision to retire was completely his choice.

Rumours suggest Brennan's role was set to change with new signings arriving at the club. With new players at his disposal, it seems Preki deemed the Newmarket native redundant, thus explaining the abruptness of Brennan's decision...

Again not really the type of trialist one would expect especially to replace the continual departure of TFC's best players. Rewan might be worth taking a chance on as he has had a decent record playing for lower table Dutch teams but he seems to be a complete head case and has hardly played or had any success since 2007. Regarding Baptiste, does TFC really need another midfielder, especially one who is 28 and never gotten out of the very poor T&T league?

I think Baptiste is actually a striker. Check out his goals to games ratio in the T&T league:-

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kerry_Baptiste

He is listed as a defender on the T&T site :) . The only guy on Joe Public who looked like he belonged on the pitch with the Impact was Gregory Richardson who played in USL last year and will play in NASL this year. Baptiste's goal tally undoubtedly has a lot to do with playing against amateur level teams.

TFC holding a press conference at 1:30 to announce new signing, on TFC TV

Couldn't get the feed to work. Damn I was looking forward to seeing what mediocre player TFC was going to sign next! :) However, I think the conference only dealt with Brennan's press conference. I like Brennan saying he is going to learn the trade from Mo. If you are going to learn to be a GM, why not find the worst most amateur guy to apprentice under? :)

Not only that, he gets to work over top a coach he retired because of the way they don't see eye to eye. Logically you would want to to work beside the man who made you give up the sport you love.

Seriously, what is Brennan and the MLSE thinking putting 3 guys together, who clearly all are looking in different directions, to build a team a week into the season.

It was always likely to be Jim Brennan's day much the same as the focus was entirely on Danny Dichio when he retired and the JDG announcement was left for another day. According to Luke Wileman two to three players are likely to be added before Saturday or early next week:-

Johnston: looking to add two or three players before Saturday, if not Monday

Two experienced defenders and a credible goalscoring threat would round out the roster quite nicely for now. Anything less will lead to serious questions being asked as to why certain players who left had to be shoved out of the door so quickly.

Agreed, 3 players quickly into the fold will help.

I have a feeling Cann will be signed, the other one or two will be intriguing to see who they are.

Still a big learning curve for everyone in TFC for this season, here's hping everyone gets on the same page ASAP

Looks like Jim Brennan's replacement at left back is ex-Skonto Riga player, Raivis Hščanovičs. Whether he plays on Saturday depends on how quickly the paperwork is processed.

Worth noting maybe that they have him listed as a right back.

http://transfermarkt.de/de/raivis-hscanovics/profil/spieler_60931.html

But based on the Latvian language story and the fact that he wore the number 3 jersey for Skonto Riga:-

I think it's still safe to assume he is a left back.

Yet another signing that doesn't appear very impressive on the face of it. A guy playing in a low level league who wasn't even a starter and has serious knee problems. TFC fans need to hope Preki is a specialist at finding guys playing well below the level they are capable of.

I'd be estatic if it was this guy pegged to replace Garcia...

but honestly, this is a step down from BRennen. At least Brennen's got some Premiership experience, and the Championship is probably better quality than most Eastern European leagues...

FYI: My 200th post ;)

Might be advisable to actually watch the guy in action before leaping to judgment? Brennan was not a good fit for the style of play Preki clearly has in mind in which the fullbacks are expected to play a key role in building up possession patiently from the back without resorting to launching a long ball every time they are put under a bit of pressure. He was more a Mo Johnston type of player suited to a British style 4-4-2 in which fullbacks are expected to be highly athletic and to make lots of overlapping runs.
