How El Salvador Wins Games

Now THAT is how you get the job done. Everyone pitched in: the fans, players, stadium, and the cops.

PANAMA CITY, July 8 (Reuters) - Panama have complained to FIFA about the treatment they received during a 3-1 World Cup qualifying defeat in El Salvador last month, saying the players were the target of racism and bags of urine.

In a letter to world soccer’s governing body, the Panamanian federation also said their goalkeeper was struck by a bottle and that El Salvador’s captain threw a Panamanian emblem to the ground after the pre-match formalities.

El Salvador, trailing 1-0 from the first leg and 1-0 down at halftime in the return, scored three times in the last 20 minutes to win the preliminary tie 3-2 on aggregate and qualify for the group stage of the CONCACAF qualifying tournament.

Panama complained that on the eve of the game, they arrived for practise at the Cuscutlan stadium and were forced to get changed on the team bus after finding the gates locked.

While they were on the bus, local fans banged against the sides of the vehicle and hurled racist insults at the players, said the letter published on the Panamanian federation’s Web site (www.marearoja.com).

“From the start to the finish of the game, our players were constantly insulted by the public who, in addition to the racist insults, threw bottles, bags of water and bags of urine, amid the indifference of the police, who should have given protection,” it said.

The letter added that goalkeeper Jaime Penedo was hit by a bottle as he prepared to take a goal kick but said the referee failed to stop the game.

I am hoping that one of these days Trinidad is the victim of that sort of BS in Central America. Then when Jack "Hide the Silverware" Warner complains to FIFA, there will be action taken, and perhaps some of these countries will finally be forced to clean up their act.

Bags of urine? Gosh... I can see their Middle-Age hairy faces screaming their frustration. If this proves to be true, FIFA should take drastic measures.

PS: Did they bring also the famous FIFA FairPlay banner?

We need to start being less gracious hosts

I fear that we'll see more Jamaican flags in Toronto on August 20...

that's always crossing a line, if I was a player, and my home fans were being racist, I'd have half a mind to walk off the pitch myself. You should never let opposition fans affect your behaivour but I think it's the home team and organizations responsibility to fight this behaivour.

kinda odd though for el salvadorians to be racist towards panamanians though it's probably equally bad plain old bigotry labeled somewhat oddly as racism.

maybe the bags of urine was way too much too. could you imagine getting hit by a bag of pee? thats just asking to escalate the situation.

I can't even imagine peeing in a bag, let alone getting hit by the bag.

I also can't imagine what the security at BMO would do if they caught someone trying to smuggle in a bag of piss. They probably wouldn't be too violent; who wants to touch a guy who's willing to carry around a bag of his own urine?

^^ Hahaha.

OK, can anyone else remember this story? I thought Bobby Lendaruzzi told this story not long after he was MNT coach. They were to play a WCQ game in El Salvador. He said the team was told if they lose or even tie, there probably wouldn't be a problem post-game. But if they won, at the final whistle the players would not attempt to go back to the dressing room, but instead were to proceed to the middle of the field, where they would be airlifted by helicopter as that would be the only safe way to leave. Canada lost the game, so the plan was never enacted.

That's quite a story. Incidentally, countries that can't even be civilised hosts need to be sanctioned. No player on any team should have to put up with urine bags or hard projectiles.

True story (at least that's exactly how I heard it...with Bobby at the table in Cocoyoc as I recall), complete with a (small) police escort for a handful of Canadian fans and the team out of the stadium after the loss. (Was the escort back to the Embassy to await their flight?) But are you sure that it was Bobby as coach? I thought it was the quadrennial before he became MNT manager, but perhaps not. It would have been (I'm guessing) '94 WC qualifying, not '98. Was he coach in 1993?

El Salvador is well-known as the worst place to play a match; I'm not aware of it being nearly as bad anywhere else in the world. I wouldn't trust Guatemala, but the rest of Central America is (hopefully) nowhere near as bad.

The problem with this garbage is that it happens to countires like Panama, Canada, etc...

If this kind of thing happened to Italy or Germany or England in a WCQ match, you can bet FIFA would be all over the matter.

The solution is simple...bounce El Salvador from the competition if there is proof of these events (with fair rights of appeal, etc...). But, like I say, as long as its Canada that needs the airlift, FIFA won't care.

If these allegations are true, El Salvadore should be banned immediately and fined into bankruptcy. It's not enough to say, oh well that's Concacaf. If there's anything remotely distracting for the MNT in qualifying, a letter of protest should be sent the following day, and don't relent until they're playing in empty stadiums.

It couldn't have been '93. IIRC Canada went into El Salvador and won 2-1.

Nothing new with the urine bag. I remember seeing Craig Forrest get hit with one while taking a goal kick in 1996 or 97 during WC qualifiers.

Ya. I remember seeing Pesch taking a throw in and getting hit three times in succession. Bang bang bang.

I recall Vic saying something about water and Graham remaining silent. They knew but didn't want to get into it. Perhaps they should have.

We should give our guys a lot of credit for having to put up with such things.

It could have been 1997 when we lost 4-1 in San Salvador. We had beaten them (i think, pretty sure) in the SF round in 1996 on their home soil so they might have been extra pissed(zing :D) off. That game incidentally is when Forrest got hit in the back with a bag of piss and Rauter said "I hope that's water".

Kind of ironic that it is Panama doing the complaining. While their fans are not as bad as ES, they are hardly innocent of that sort of thing.

I also have to laugh when I hear UEFA countries complain about playing in places like Turkey. That's kid stuff compared to what Canada has to put up with.

Ah well, now that an important and influential country (Panama) has been injured, perhaps the complaint will be taken seriously, and not ignored like it was only Canada or something.

Turkey can be just as bad. A few years ago when the swiss went there to play a WCQ playoff it all kicked off. First the team was held at the airport for 8 hours while 'their passports were checked'. They weren't even allowed to go in to a back room, they had to stand out with the public yelling and spitting on them. Then when they finally got on the buss, it was pelted by rocks and bricks, breaking half the windows. Swiss Tv reported that the buss was even shot at. Then at the match itself when the swiss clinched their spot at the world cup the Turkish fans pelted the player with batteries and bottles. Then one of the Turkish trainers kicked one of the Swiss players as they were running off leading to a brawl. Swiss supporters got it pretty bad too. The Turkish fans threw bags full of piss and paint at them all match.
