pokey1
ANdrea lOmbardo is no longer with Rieti and was released out right according to a google alert i recieved. which indicates that he was not pick up by any teams in the Jan deadline in the europe market. and was released and is free to play any where he wishes. Maybe Toronto FC should have a look at him now that he can play anywhere.
Massive Attack
This only happened one day ago (well two days now I guess): http://www.tuttomercatoweb.com/index.php?action=read&id=50491 They make no mention of Andrea going back to Atalanta. It appears he never really was on loan than. He's a free agent basically.
BigBird
Just to follow up, on this matter my understanding is that he is still in Italy trying to find a team. This was mentioned to me to someone very close to Lombardo. He has indicated that to he was going to be released from Reiti, not seeing it eye to eye with his former club and not getting much playing time does not help either or motivate a player. at a very young age sitting and watching from a bench is not something you can handle easily. I know this would not go with my son nor with others who make huge major sacifaces leaving there friends and family thousands of miles behind them. However I think it will be a matter of short time before he would find another team in Europe or elsewhere and will do well provided he plays more then he has in the past tewo years. Deadlines means nothing other then a trade or transfer. The Important thing is that he has a out right release from all clubs and is free to go where he wants and use this opportuntiy at his best on the field and not a bench. But I think you will find him playing soon in Italy as I was told.

He will have his chance to redeem in the Under 20 not far away. Hopefully he will score many goals like that one I am aware of. It is unfortunate that such a big country and now only four players playing in Italy and struggling with injuries.
VPjr
I hope Lombardo is offered a place on the TFC roster and takes it. He needs to play and might get that opportunity here and make a decent salary at the same time. I really can't see how riding the bench for some small Serie C2 squad would be any better for his development than coming over to MLS would be. Maybe I am naive but I just prefer to see Canadian talent here in Toronto, especially since there are spots still available on the TFC roster for Canucks. But if a may make a few comments to share some lights on and off It does not matter where or who he plays with, he needs to get in a 90 minute role for a club, given that chance then he will have only himself to blame if things did not work out. Coaches, clubs or the distance from his family etc……will have nothing or anything to do with his future however, I am sure if given that chance he will shine and heighten his career to another level as the experience he retained in Italy will go unmeasured. Unless he does this I would be nothing but disappointed. I believe Europe strengthen his career let me make know mistake about, motivated by good clubs such as Atalanta who has the finest youth prospects in Italy, Perugia excellent of marketers of players Italy, and Rieti to be coached by Borrello, who last year headed the Italy Under 20 national team program is no small gesture on your part. This Rieti team is not as small as you may think it is in a C2 division that has worked up from Serie d and has a stadium and tifosi’s that will and can support a Serie B team. Lombardo does not need (might’s) or (spots) as you mentioned on a bench. He needs be a dot on the field in every game…….and I hope its still in Italy,…….. paraa
Having been through the system myself, I have come to know the politics involved at the youth level in Italy. I'm sure a player of Lombardo's quality will have little trouble finding a job with another team in Europe soon. A source of mine stated that 4 teams were interested in Lombardo, and the reason he did not accept these offers was it would conflict with him U20 training for the upcoming World Cup. If I am not mistaken, free agents are free to sign with any team up until March 31. Hopefully Lombardo finds a team that will accomodate his need for playing time. It appears he never really was on loan than. He's a free agent basically. Massive maybe I can share some thoughts on this matter as I know it His contract with Rieti was rescinded it dose not mean anything other then there was a disagreement between the two parties and they both released each other obligations. Now according to the rules of the federation he must report back immediately to the club that he was sent from in this case most likely Perugia, maybe Atalanta depending on Perugia Club resources of players. Because Perugia and Atalanta from my understanding from my dear friend he was owned in a 50/50 partnership rights of Lombardo book till I think 2007 June or 2008 not sure however on the actual dates but . I believe that Lombardo is still owned by these club Today as no mentioned of them both, or one of a release. Until such time he cannot not go elsewhere unless both of these clubs 1) Agree to it ( not for this year as the market is closed)cannot play in any other club in A<B<C< or D, unless #(2) 2) Both rescind their contracts and partnership or 3) Between the two of them they decide which of the two he will go 4) Or do nothing till his contract is expired in 2007 or 08 But like I said in a previuos post I would be dispointed if he left Italy and believe (from a someone here in TO) close to Lombardo indicated he has had several offers in Italy, but I’m sure that these are his only options and he will end up to play for one of these teams I mmentioned above as soon as the polictical unfulences come to some either a sort of a agreement or a rescinded contract. Other wise he is stuck in limbo they say now that the market is closed and no where to go until such expiry takes place.
Massive Attack
Thanks for the extra info, BigBird. I though there had to be more to the story then just being released by Rieti. Hopefully Andrea can stay in match shape for the U-20's no matter what happens in the next few months.

I noticed in another post in this forum today oh boy! I’m not sure that’s what was best for him I'm very disappointed with the outcome and sure had hope that he would have remained in Italy under the umbrella of Atalanta or Perugia. I really cannot believe he left so soon. I think he just simply did not get his chance to show what he could have done there, Oh well, I sure wish him well and hope that what ever his choices now, he makes a the right one and gets to show what he can do for a team out there. On this site they speak in glowing terms about Canadian soccer and the list they show is indeed impressive and yes they forecast us to be a world power and far better than the USA.Good reading guys. He was with Southampton youth academy for 1 or 2 yrs before being release a few months ago. He's in our U-20 players pool and according to the CSA he's currently with the team in Florida for the february training camp.

He's an '89. Was with Porto, would have to do a little research to see if he's still there. Went with the U18s to Scotland last April.
