Currently the MLS Toronto has about the same fan base as the Fury. It also lags far far behind the Impact and Whitecaps.

Just to interject here, but that's because a lot of people still don't know that there is a team. I'm continually reminding people (or informing for the first time) that Toronto has an MLS team. These are people that will watch the team on TV and make the occasional road trip from Ottawa with me to see games.

My main point is that obviously the team has not been advertised, so once MLSE starts their blitz (I predict sometime in the summer), expect the fan base to grow quite a bit.

If the media will give it as much as the Raptors in advance promotions we maybe ok. It is all up to the media guys!

It is old hype we are talking about. Will the media accept us as a North American sport.Sofar the Star Canada's biggest newspaper already has shown their colours.

Believe you me,I lived through this NASL stuff and it was terrible, the pure neglect and those pure anti soccer feelings. This has to change. We must find a way to accomplish this. How do we turn that media bastion around, any suggestons?

The Star are now part indirect owners of MLSE and the new team, so I expect that somewhat more pro-soccer commentary will start to drown out Dave Perkins rants. I really think that things will be different this time around. Sportsnet and the Score both seem soccer friendly, so its just a question of getting writers to put a more upbeat spin on their soccer columns...

Very true. It's difficult to promote a team that doesn't have a name, a logo or colours.

If in six months from now we're no further ahead than we are now, then we can start to feel concerned.

Until an official launch of the club, commenting on lack of support for the club is more than just a little bit foolish.

Hello mlsintoronto - My suggestion for a team name: Fort York. My reasons: (1) Before Toronto was Toronto it was called York, and known by the Fortress that existed and still exists there (altered) to this day. (2) The word "Fort" means strength in several languages including french, italian, portuguese. (3) Without becoming childish (e.g like the Mighty Ducks of the NHL) the name Fort York could be used for merchandising (the look I have in mind is of General Isaac Brock).

- I would like to see the new Toronto team's colour be solid dark green. My reasons: (1) It would go with the military "Fort" theme. (2) No major club that I can think of is solid green so Toronto would be the first.

I will attend games no matter what you call the team, but please don't choose a name that is childish. The Leafs are what they are partly (I think) because they tap into our sense of history and culture. I think that the name Fort York can be marketed in a similar way.

Although "Toronto United" is still my first choice, as someone who studied military history, I like "Fort York". It might be more marketable than the earlier "Toronto Garrison" suggestion. Isaac Brock would be great too - just as long as they keep it to the crest and not hire some idiot to walk around as a "Brock mascot". Some might complain that it will not appeal to the immigrant community, but I think that this is a minor point. The 905 crowd won't have a problem with it, and they are going to be very important.

I have to disagree, however, with the choice of solid dark green. It may have limited marketing appeal, and solid green, along with grey, is traditionally reserved for the keeper's uniform - so there could be problems.

Looks like Toronto United is the fan's choice!

It's certainly my pick! I assume that you are refering to the Sportsnet poll where "Toronto United" emerged as the winner? I hope the MLSE crowd took notice of it.

One other idea to mention to mlsintoronto (assuming he hasn't been scared off the board yet :) ), another post of mine in another thread has prompted me to remember that in my youth I was a member of a supporters club for kids which was set up by the club. It was called the "Blizzard Booster Club", and we got free posters, signed colour photos of our favourite players, etc. for our $5 or whatever it was to join. I suspect MLSE is already thinking of something like this. It was a good way to get kids to feel as though they were official members (because it was an official club for youngsters) of the team. It was also a good way to cater to kids by not actually distracting them or the adult fans around them from watching the match as it is being played (which is one of the criticisms that I and a number of others in the group have of the way the Lynx have done things, when the game is on and you are trying to watch the action the club's mascot will come into the stands and cause a riot amongst the kids as he hands out free t-shirts, miniature nerf soccer balls, bags of un-cooked pasta, whatever could be done to encourage kids to not actually watch the product they came to see).

Yes watching the Sportsnet last Saturday, they showed the poll results sofar and Toronto United seemed to have a good lead.

This was my original pick so that makes me feel just good!

I do hope that this name thing gets handled asap so we can spread the gospel with a name attached.

Oh my... I read a quarter of it and I want to vomit.

Someone who wants to make the team a "product people will want to buy" and "found out about the U-Sector" on this board is asking for your opinion.

Tell him to go to hell for crying out loud. That guy knows **** about local soccer and his knowledge of the sport probably goes down to what he saw on Sportsnet.

He wants you money, while he really should care about the state of soccer in the country (isn't after all the MLS team supposed to pull us all out of our misery by bringing Canadian soccer to the top level? Hello, Kevan Pipe).

This is ridiculous!

As a westerner born and raised some years ago in Ontario, I think the Toronto team should be called the "Toronto Ladies and Escorts" to commemorate the city's grand Presbyterian roots.

If you can hang on just a few minutes, I'll get you a bucket.

Actually I'll bring four as once you get through the next three quarters of the thread I'll sure you will throw up another three times, once more for each quarter, since generally the whole thread is people not taking up your suggestion and telling him off rudely for no readily apparent reasonn - funnily enough!

And then perhaps I'll bring a hose, and a wafer-thin mint......

Tough crowd!

Okay - officially leaving this board. Thank you all for your comments. I hear you loud and clear. Not wanted. I get it.

I won't be reading any more.

That's all it took?

Geez.

That's all? Rudi I'm surprised he lasted as long as he did (in fact I even joked about that much earlier in the day before mpenza's ridiculous post). You might not have read it yet, but according to a post of his on bigsoccer he also got a lot of direct emails from posters on this board taking shots at him.

It's all been a bit of a [B)] on the board, I'm afraid

I don't know. From what I can gather, there have been more constructive posts in this thread than the knee-jerk 'f*** him' post that seemed to faze him so easily.

His post on bigsoccer.com indicates that most of the personal abuse comments came via direct email. If that's the case, it wasn't just this post (& the many paranoid ones doubting the guy) that did it.

He also knows he's still going to get more positive & constructive feedback from the bigsoccer boards & by coming to our next meeting & speaking to us directly. Given that this is the case, why should he bother to put up with the abuse he's getting from people on this board? I wouldn't if I were in his shoes.

Yeah, I just read the post on bigsoccer.

I can see where he's coming from now.

I don't know whay mlsintoronto stuck around here as long as he did. On the other hand, anybody who has spent any time in the Southsiders zone at Whitecaps games and no doubt amongst other similar supporter groups understands one needs a very thick skin to survive in this crowd otherwise... move on.

You guys are so blinded by your MLS soccer fantasy that you don't even see it when a guy who doesn't give a rat's ass about soccer is after your money. He could've served you the same arguments if he were working for Canada's Wonderland...

You seem to automatically be putting Toronto before Canadian soccer and frankly, it's sad for the rest of the country (yes, there is a world beyond the GTA limits).

Now he's off to his little money-making marketing world and don't you worry, his job is done here and you'll have a "product" you can't get enough of once MLS comes to Canada... Buy the shirt, buy the scarf, buy the keychain, buy the panties for your mom... Have fun.

I wonder how many of you here actually go to Lynx games.
