The Chivas Cup is referenced under the thread "CSA Names U20 Training Camp Rosters", however there is no direct reference that the Mens roster will be the players competing at this tournament.

Roster is now up on the CSA site. Close to the training camp roster with some additions/subtractions, most notably Begovic comes in to play goal.

Mitchell’s U20s Depart for Chivas Cup

Canada’s Will Johnson

Ottawa, Ontario – Canada’s U20 Men’s National team departed today for Guadalajara, Mexico where they will compete in the prestigious 2006 Chivas Cup.

Canada has been grouped with Italian giants Inter Milan and four Mexican clubs – Chivas, Tigres, San Luis, and Morelia. A match schedule has yet to be released but what is known is that the young Canadians will have to play five games in as many days (January 7-11).

The group winners (4 groups of 6 teams) will advance to the semi-final (January 13) with the tournament finale the following day.

While Canada’s line-up is littered with familiar names that have featured for the Canucks before, a handful of players will be seeing their first competitive games for Mitchell’s youth team.

The most familiar name is perhaps BC-native Keegan Ayre. The experienced Ayre made a well publicized move to Scottish club Hibernian (Hibs) in the fall of 2005 and will hope to impress Mitchell and his staff enough to establish himself as a regular in Canada’s line-up.

Striker Daniel Revivo and defender Alex Ruhe-Lischke have also been added to Canada’s roster.

Revivo, who is attending Winthrop University in South Carolina, impressed the Canadian staff during the brief camp in Toronto and has been rewarded with another opportunity. The call-up for Ruhe-Lischke is the first for the University of Albany freshman defender.

FIFA World Youth Championship - Canada 2007

In 2007, Canada will host the World’s finest youth players.

The biennial event is second only to the FIFA World Cup™ in size and scope and will showcase the most talented under-20 soccer players in the world. The tournament has been the coming-out party for some of the game’s top players - Maradona, Saviola, Raúl, Marco Van Basten, Luis Figo, Rui Costa, Thierry Henry, Adriano, Roberto Carlos, Bebeto and Dunga as well as Canada’s Craig Forrest and many members of the current Men’s World Cup Team including Julian de Guzman, Paul Stalteri, Atiba Hutchinson and Iain Hume.

Last held in CONCACAF in 1983 in Mexico, Canada’s most recent participation in this event occurred last June in the Netherlands from June 10 - July 2, 2005.

Canada enjoyed it’s its best ever finish in a World Championship in December 2003, losing to eventual silver medalist Spain on a golden goal in the quarter finals in the United Arab Emirates.

The Canadian Championship will take place in Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Edmonton, Vancouver, and Victoria with the tentative dates for the tournament set for July 1-22, 2007.

Looks like we were a last minute replacement for the US U-18 squad (hence the late announcement from the CSA), who were originally supposed to be in it (as were the U-18's for Holland and Barcelona, but I don't know if that was for the club in Spain or Ecuador). It looks like it is a U-18 tournie (for those born in 1987 or later), but they are making exceptions for the Canadians who will have the full U-20 squad.

It is a huge youth tournament of 750 teams, all the way from 6 years to 18 year olds. Because this is Chivas's centennial year, they have expanded the U-18 part to a "Super Group" of 24 teams.

From an older announcment on the Chivas club site:

http://www.chivas.naranya.com/show_nota.php?id=617

Isn't the 'full U-20 squad' actually a squad of 1987's (or later)?

TORONTO LYNX MEDIA RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

TORONTO LYNX JR ALUMNI DEPART FOR CHIVAS CUP IN MEXICO

Wednesday January 4, 2006 (TORONTO, ON) - Three Toronto Jr. Lynx alumni, Alex Ruhe-Lischke, Daniel Revivo, and John Jonke, will accompany Dale Mitchell's Canadian U20 team to the Chivas Cup in Mexico from January 7-11. All three players previously played on the U17 Toronto Lynx Junior Team coached by Tom Croft in 2004 where they went undefeated and became semi-finalists in the Super Y League North American Finals. Both Revivo and Jonke also played for the Toronto Lynx U19 team which was the first Canadian team since the 1980's to gain a final berth in the prestigious Dallas Cup in 2005.

Three other Junior Lynx alumni were also involved in the recent U20 identification camp here in Toronto two weeks ago. Taylor McNamara, Adam Catley and Erik Di Lorenzo joined the three other Lynx players to form a strong Junior Lynx presense at the camp. "Everyone involved in the Junior Lynx Academy is very proud of our representation at the recent U20 training camp," comments Academy Director Duncan Wilde. "It sends a positive message to our younger players within the program. We feel confident that some of our players will qualify for the final squad selection for the 2007 World Youth Championships".

Canada will be competing in the Chivas Cup against Italian giants, Inter Milan, as well as four other Mexican clubs, Chivas, Tigres, San Luis and Morelia to form Group I of the competition. The Chivas Cup is but one of the tournaments entered by the U20 Canadian team in their preparation for the FIFA World Youth Championships to be held in Canada in 2007.

All three Jr. Lynx players are products of the U.S. college soccer system and are a part of an incredible list of 12 Junior Lynx players from the 2004 U17 Jr. Lynx team who are on soccer scholarships south of the border. Jonke plays with Louisville (along with his brother, U19 Jr. Lynx alumnus Frank), while Revivo toils at Winthrop and Rue-Liske joining McNamara and Di Lorenzo at Albany. From the CSA:

Canada Drops Opener 4-0 to Tigres

Canada’s Asmir Begovic

Ottawa, Ontario – Canada’s U20 Men’s National team lost its opening match of the 13th Chivas Cup this morning in Guadalajara, Mexico.

The Canucks gave up four second-half goals, three in just under 15 minutes, while squandering several excellent chances to slice into the Tigres lead.

While the score-line perhaps flattered the Mexicans, the Canucks could not take their opportunities when they presented themselves, and in the end paid the price.

Canada’s first real chance of the match fell to Nana Attakora-Gyan from a Canadian corner and Tigres up two-nil. The powerful Attakora-Gyan found himself unmarked just shy of the six-yard box but the defender’s header sailed over the bar.

Canada again had an opportunity to slice into Tigres’ advantage - this time with the score three goals to zero after the Canucks surrendered their first of two penalties - when Will Johnson created enough space to get a shot off from a very tight angle. The shot fooled the ‘keeper but ricocheted off the bar and was quickly scrambled away by the Tigres defense.

Minutes later, AJ Gray got the better of his marker on the right flank and swung a deep cross toward two unmarked Canadians at the far post. But both attackers had made early runs and could only watch as the cross sailed beyond them.

Then things got worse for Canada when Kyle Oliveira received his second yellow card and his marching orders. Oliveira will now miss the next game against Morelia.

Tigres converted their second penalty as time was expiring and with the match already out of reach.

Perhaps the comments from Canadian Assistant Nick Dasovic summed up the encounter best.

“A disappointing result”, said Dasovic. “We started the game off quite well but a lack of fitness and discipline forced five substitutions and resulted in losing four second half goals.

“We now have to get organized and prepared for another tough match tomorrow versus Morelia.”

Canadian defender Stephen Lumley will likely miss the next match. The pacy defender left at the half with a shoulder injury and is questionable for the Morelia game.

Canada has been grouped with Italian giants Inter Milan and four Mexican clubs – Tigres, Chivas, San Luis, and January 8th opponent Morelia.

The group winners (4 groups of 6 teams) will advance to the semi-final (January 13) with the tournament finale the following day.

Canada Comes Up Short Against Morelia

Ottawa, Ontario – Canada’s U20 Men’s National team lost its second match in as many days when they fell 2-1 to Morelia at the Chivas Cup this morning in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Canada again leaked two goals in quick succession after surrendering a penalty a half an hour into the contest, then the eventual winner eight minutes later.

But the Canucks, outpaced by Tigres the day previous, looked far better this morning and were rewarded almost immediately when they grabbed an early lead in minute four after a Will Johnson corner was drilled through the area and found the head of defender Nana Attakora-Gyan eight yards out. Attakora-Gyan found himself in a similar spot yesterday but headed high; when offered a second chance, the big defender took it and powered his header past a helpless Morelia ‘keeper.

Twenty minutes later though, the Canadians were again penalized for a rash tackle in the area when Kerr McLeod’s sliding challenge caught a Morelia attacker inside the Canadian box. Asmir Begovic managed to get a hand to the spot kick but was unable to keep in out.

Four minutes after the break, Morelia struck again.

This time a deep cross to the far post found an unmarked Morelia attacker who made no mistake with his header, and suddenly Canada were down.

Though they searched valiantly, the equalizer never came and the match ended with Canada a goal short.

“We were better today,” said Head Coach Dale Mitchell. “But mistakes are punished by the opposition in this tournament."

“It is imperative that you keep possession in the heat here when you get it, and we are struggling a bit in that regard.”

Canada plays San Luis on January 9, and then takes on host Guadalajara the next day. The Canadians round off the tournament against Inter Milan on Wednesday, January 11.

NOTES

- Stephen Lumley suffered a separated shoulder in game one of the Tournament and is unlikely to play again…

How can the same game report on the one hand inform us of a powerful header leaving a a Mexican goalie helpless, and yet fail to provide us with the names of the goal scorers of this match. As usual, only by the very professional people in charge of the CSA.

I think you are mixing up the game reports from Day 1 and Day 2.

And in Day 3 .... a 4-0 win for Canada over San Luis.

Canada Too Much for San Luis

Ottawa, Ontario – Canada’s U20 Men’s National team finally found its scoring touch in its third match of the Chivas Cup this morning in Guadalajara, Mexico, when it fired six unanswered goals past Mexican club side San Luis.

Canada’s Daniel Revivo paced the Canucks with a hat-trick. The Richmond Hill native grabbed two of his three in the opening 15 minutes, and then rounded off the scoring for Canada on the hour mark. The goals were Revivo’s first in a Canadian uniform.

Shane Lammie and Alex Elliott each grabbed a goal for Canada in between Revivo’s first-half brace and Hector Contreras added another five minutes into the second half.

Canada’s Head Coach, Dale Mitchell, was quick to praise the offensive output but also had one eye on what was around the corner.

“It’s obviously good to get our first win of the tournament and the goals will do our confidence no harm. However, tomorrow we face our toughest opponent to date in Chivas of Guadalajara. We will need to do many things well in order to compete with them.”

The Canadians were dealt a blow late in the match. Three minutes after Revivo had stretched Canada’s lead to six, Rudolph Mayard was shown a straight red card for a clumsy tackle inside the San Luis penalty area. Mayard will now miss the Chivas match.

Canada plays tournament host Guadalajara on January 10. The Canadians round off the tournament against Inter Milan on Wednesday, January 11.

- Stephen Lumley suffered a separated shoulder in game one of the Tournament and is unlikely to play again…

- Rudolph Mayard will be unavailable due to his sending off in the January 9 game vs. San Luis…
