Canada Loses 3-1 to Undefeated Chivas

Canadian scorer Will Johnson

Ottawa, Ontario – Canada’s U20 Men’s National team couldn’t reproduce yesterday’s scoring output when the Canucks took on group leaders Chivas this morning in Guadalajara, Mexico.

The Canadians surrendered a goal in the opening minutes of the first half, and two more in the second. Canada did reply through Will Johnson near the hour mark but could not reduce the deficit any further.

Chivas grabbed the opener in minute 11, catching the Canadians napping with a quickly taken free kick. The Mexican attacker slid a pass across the top of the area for a team mate who slammed home his shot before the Canucks could react.

Twenty-five minutes later, Chivas stretched their lead to two, when a Chivas attacker made his way to the end line, then whipped a low cross through the six. The Mexican attacker was first to react, easily converting from the centre of the goal.

The Mexican outfit made it three in minute 55 when a Chivas attacker took a pass off his chest inside the Canadian area, then audaciously scored with an overhead kick.

But Johnson breathed some hope into the Canadian cause when he sliced into the Chivas lead two minutes after the Mexican’s third goal. The Chicago Fire striker stood over a Canadian free kick almost 40 yards from goal and saw the Chivas keeper anticipating a cross. But Johnson had different ideas, driving his free kick over the Chivas keeper for Canada’s only goal of the contest.

“We had a positive approach to today’s game after our win yesterday, but our mental and physical condition was less than 100%,” said Head Coach Dale Mitchell. “A couple of soft goals and an inability to add to our first one were the difference.”

Canada’s inability to grab a second added to their frustration and in the dying moments of the match, that frustration manifested itself in a Johnson tackle. The goal-scorer was sent off for a harsh tackle from behind and will now miss the final game of the tournament against Inter Milan.

In four games we have had three PKs against us and 3 red cards. Either we are being very undisciplined or are being subject to some classic Mexican referreeing.

I'd bet the farm on the latter.

Canada Comes Up Short Against Inter Milan

Ottawa, Ontario – Canada’s U20 Men’s National team lost its final match 2-1 to Italian giants Inter Milan this morning at the Chivas Cup in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Canada fell behind in minute 21 but a Daniel Revivo goal, his fourth of the tournament, just seconds before the interval knotted the game at one.

The Italians caught Canada napping immediately after the break, capitalizing on a chance that presented itself seconds after the kick-off.

The Canucks pressed for a second equalizer but again could not convert their chances into goals.

“Today was a tough match but one that was winnable,” said Head Coach Dale Mitchell. “We certainly had enough of the ball and created opportunities to win.

“However, we are not a group that can win difficult matches at the moment, but it is our job to get there in the future. The tournament has been an excellent opportunity to view these players in tough games.”
